Hyperion books or The Reality Dysfunction

Harry Harrison - good call! I discovered sci-fi when I was a kid 🙂
Mark you I still happily read Black Library stuff too...

I was absolutely smitten with Revenger by the end of it.

The last SF novel that had me so affected was probably Hyperion, of maybe Banks' Matter.

On more of a fantasy theme - any Steven Donaldson fans here?

Nope, Mr rape McRapmyster, can stick his own book up his arse (except for "one ride through" and "a mirror of her dreams") I resisted for ages but caved and bought the gap series, how I regret it.. why did I not learn from the chronicles.

I loved the Chronicles (first 3, not the second 3 so much) but I read them as a young teenager, not sure if they would survive a re-read. He seems to get a lot of stick for really florid, ham-fisted writing but that's not really a problem for a young reader - plus the dramatic melancholy is right up your street at that age. I can still picture a lot of the imagery to this day so he was doing something right with his storytelling. The (anti)hero of the books is obv quite problematic for a number of reasons.

He does seem to have a thing for rape-as-plot-device IIRC - like z1ppy I read the first gapinto book and really couldn't be arsed with it.

I’ve picked up the Hyperion omnibus (jeez it’s dense, you could use that tome for home defence!).

I also got Elizbeth Moon Vatta War Book one, and a couple of other random selections as I always get carried away when buying books.

I’ll start the STW SF Swap ship thread when I’m back from holiday and have sorted out some extraneous books!

Must admit, i'm not in love with 'Culture' I started with the first, Consider Phlebas which had too many characters, too much confusion and the writer just seems to make things as complicated as humanly possible with as many long and complicated words has he can throw in there.

Next up is Play of Games, which is a bit better, but again a bit wordy in the context that just using long and unspeakable words doesn't necessarily add anything to the storyline. The using character names that are too long, complex and unpronouncable, again, it's just letters/text for the sake of it. The book is better than the first one, but i'm still struggling with it.

I've got 3rd book in the series, but i've also bought some Clive Cussler as i get on with his books and enjoy them more...

I started with Look To Windward. I think it's a bit more approachable than some of his early stuff.
Use Of Weapons is great.

Dave Hutchinson's Europe in... Series is good.

I have just finished Noumenon by marina j lostetter, it was great. I have bought the second one.

I'm really enjoying a random Sci fi purchase called Rosewater. About halfway through and it's making a great holiday read. A bit unusual for Sci fi as it's set in Nigeria.
