Left me a bit bemused this one; totally unexpected.

Picking my lads up from school today, just walking back to the car and the chap parked behind with his kids in the car lent out of the window and hurled a bit of vaguely threatening verbal my way, it seems for parking too close to his car. This is on the side of a side road, with me parked in front of him and nothing behind him. I was a bit shocked, and looked to see how much space I’d left. It genuinely seemed plenty to me, at about 12-18 inches. I said as such, but he got more wound up, culminating in a threat to strangle me (I kid you not) if I were to do it again. I took a quick pic of him in his car, mainly to catch his reg, which seemed to make him want to leave quickly.

I’m now mulling the incident over. Would STW;

a) Carry bombers in side pocket from now on, just in case,

b) Chalk it up to experience

c) Report it on 101, in case of escalation.

or a combination of the above?

all seems a bit silly, but it has left me a little annoyed, my lads (6 and 7) shouldn’t have to see such things.

If this behaviour goes unchallenged, it becomes the norm.

Perhaps discuss with the school to see if he's got form for this. Then yeah, probably 101 so it's logged, especially as you have pictorial evidence.

Report to 101. Doesn’t take much time, other people may have done the same and it all adds up to stats which might mean resources are allocated to tackle the issue. You’ve done your bit, reported a problem and can then forget about it.

I'd report it.  without witnesses nothing will come of it but a marker will be put on the car for anpr.

I find school run gets the worst driving and road rage

What branch of the military was he from? If it's RAF, you can report without any fear of reprisals. 🙂

I'd report it, just as a marker as he's likely to have done it before, and eventually will lose his rag in a worse way with someone.

A 12 inch gap isn't much, and would be an inconvenience if another car was parked that close behind him.  But there wasn't, so he was just being a knob.

Parent at my daughter's village infant school punched another dad. Didn't realise the guy he was punching was an off duty policeman.

Depends if it's a man's 12 inches or a woman's 12 inches

police have better things to do.

Wouldnt want them to actually do anything about it as such; I’m just thinking about potential future escalation, either with me or some other hapless neat parker.

Looked like plenty of space to me, and he was in a mini FFS.

Is that the version with weird back doors? Probably couldn't put his shopping away.

Aah, theres your problem. Nobody that drives a Mini can park!

I'd just park even closer to him next time, and then walk past the car and take kids to the shop for an ice cream while he self implodes.

Pah, this sort of stuff never used to happen when kids walked to and from school !

I'd have got in my car, reversed into his front bumper then had a right pop at him for parking too close to you.

OP I think the other driver may have a bit of a crush on you and it was the only way he could think of expressing it.

Next time you see him say " Sorry,I am not available but thanks for the attention" 😉

Did he ask if you knew who he was?

Are the kids called " Ronnie jnr and Ronette?"

If so I may know the guy...

police have better things to do.

Get it in the system. The system prioritises what the police have to do. It's what elevates the incident and associated incidents to 'better things' (or not, as the case may be).

Not quite sure what the STW massive would have talked about all day if it wasn't for their bravery.

I agree, especially if the OP was able to park somewhere else allowing plenty of space. It would almost feel like the OP had parked like a dick to make a point.

Ah, maybe. If you’re a paranoid self important nobber I suppose, you’re right.

or it could be that the OP had limited space to park without blocking drives or inconveniencing other road users?

I would report it. After my one proper road rage altercation last year, with threats of pistols etc I find that these ****s will only learn if taken down a peg or two. I knew with that one if I'd got out, it was on and I mean fully on. It's the only way some people will learn, otherwise he will.just keep.on bullying folk!

I’d bloody love to cycle. But with a 44 mile round trip morning and afternoon, I reckon I’d have to set off before I got home...

cant change to a closer school because its close to their mum, and they live 51% of the time with her.

This wasn't a criticism of the OP by the way.  If the guy in the Mini had nothing behind him, why couldn't he just reverse a bit before pulling out (hardly a great hardship).  So, trying to think why the Mini man was angry?  Could it just be the inconvenience of having to reverse - the last straw on a bad morning?  Not a great excuse to threaten to strangle someone, but who knows?  Was he pissed off that you parked that close unnecessarily when you could have left him 10 feet, without causing any other issues?  Most likely answer was that he was just a bit of a knob.

Teach his kid to ride a bike, he'll never get that back.

Serious answer. I work in a school and they would like to know. Just tell them you're reporting an incident but not making a formal complaint as without complete proof they can't really act  but I'd be surprised if it were isolated. Good chance the tool is on their radar already.

And get a dashcam that records sound. 20 quid well spent..!

101 is your call.

Just remember that the worst thing you can do to him is be super over the top polite and friendly. That'll be annoy him as much as anything!

Report to the school and say that he used threatening language in front of your and his children. As said he may have form. No doubt he will do it again and if a member of staff witnesses, more can be done by the school. Some are hot on this and can even take out a banning/ esclusion order so he wont be able to go near the school during school hours and for a set time before and after. That would be inconvenient for him.

2 possible reactions to that:

1)  He will be mortified at his overreaction and will think twice about doing it in future.

2)  He will think your are a 'pussy' and a pushover, and react worse next time as he thinks he can get away with it.

Can't win really.  Chalk it up.  He is a knob, you can be the better man.  Karma will get him.

No you should have said get out of your little metal box mate. IN RONNIE PICKERING style he will remain happily seated.

Tomorrow you have two options

Run from behind and sucker punch him clean out in front of his kids.

Drive straight over the bellend and just go about your business as if its a favor to the rest of us.

You should have asked him if he meant manual strangulation or a blood choke, trachea crush, corrotid choke, collar choke, short choke, rear naked choke, cross collar choke, baseball choke, triangle choke or other?

I’d have got back in my car, inched it forward  another 6 inches, got out again, cheesiest smile, kiss blown and been on my way. There’s no point arguing with these people - it’s all they want you to do. Own them with love.

I’d make a concerted effort to always park in front of or behind his car and as close as humanly possible from now on. Just watch his impotent rage build until he cries in front of you or drops down dead. Some people are just dicks.

Let the school know.  Our Primary ended up with coppers outside after a 'parent' who only lived 500m away, drove to the gate, where a taxi driver was dropping off a special needs kid, and threatened to beat up the taxi driver for making it difficult to turn round.

The school will send out letters and it might make the idiot think, especially if the kids have seen the note !

I’ve parallel-parked into a space between two parked cars which left about that between each end of my Octavia. First time I tried it with that car, I’d only had it less than a week, I was rather proud of myself! 😊

Okay. Reported to 101 who seem to be taking it relatively seriously due to the actual threat of violence. I’ve mentioned it to the school who have made a note of the reg and the police ref no. Awaiting a call from a local bobby; will probably be ages as realistically it’s not particularly serious unless it escalated. Thanks for advice and opinions all.

Arrange with a mate so that both of you turn up at the same time, and each park 1" from either end of his car. Then casually get out and have a nice, long chinwag until he spontaneously combusts from rage.

I had an altercation with a bloke dropping kids off, I reported it and the coppers went round his house and had a word and put a plain cop car there in the morning.

There was an altercation outside my girls' school last year - two blokes right in front of the gates actually coming to blows. Basically one guy was parked up on the zig zags talking on his phone after dropping his kid off and someone pulled him up on it and he didn't like it. What an utter arsehole - not only did he feel entitled enough to do it in the first place, but he then felt it okay to punch the person that (rightfully) told him to move.

My wife had almost exactly the same issue.

She parked on front of someone and apparently didn't leave enough room and the bloke had a massive go at her outside the school gates in fornt of my kids.  Other parents had to step in.  She reported it to the school and the police.  The school weren't overly surprised as they had issues with him before.

I work in the village most of the time but luckily for him (and I suspect in the long run, me) I was on a work trip in Hungary at the time as I would have been straight round the school to intervene and it's unlikely I would have been able to keep the red mist at bay.

He knows who I am and who my wife is so now if I get the chance to walk at him, glare at him or intimidate him in any other way, I take it.

I suspect he only likes to pick on women or those who won't fight back, as he gives me a wide berth.

Not really relevant, but...

in town, there's a short pedestrian zone.  I was crossing the road just outside the zone when a car (BMW funnily enough, aren't Minis made by BMW now?) passed close enough for me to slap the roof.  So I did and crossed behind the car.  Driver opened his window and started spouting some form of threats, going to punch my pus or somesuch nonsense.  Anyway, my side of the conversation (and possibly how the OP should respond if it happens again) went a bit like this..

"Sorry, pal can't hear you"

threat threat

"Nope, a bit louder there, still cant hear you"

tHREAT THreat tHrEAT

"Nah mate you're gonna have to speak up - can't hear a word you're saying

THREAT THREAT THREAT

"Sorry can't hear you for those cars behind you tooting their horns"

..and that point he left, face redder than baboons arse

Quick OP, strangle yourself a tiny bit before the police come round. Just enough to leave slight bruising. Tell your kids to say they witnessed him strangle you!

Report him and he’ll be put down as you felt threatened.

Cross thread brilliance right there 😀

@ billoddie

aye, plenty of hard men when they are talking to women.

my wife worked with one, he got sacked for stealing, so him and his chavtastic wife mounted the pavement and jumped out threatening to ‘do her over’ (they blamed her for it, but he was actually caught by a more senior manager)

i was round his house in less than ten minutes, they were at the door as i walked up the path, so i dragged him out by the throat and dropped him off in the street. All i said was’get that thing under control, or I’ll come back’

didn’t enjoy it, I always thought he was a sound guy until that day.
