The car was coming towards us, then the headlights flip round, one over the other. Never seen anything like it. Wasnt sure it was a car even, till we got closer. Thought someone had thrown 2 torches into the road or something.
Got closer to see it was due to the car flipping onto its roof.
Only the driver on the car and she wasn't inured thank God.
Be careful out there guys. Life can change in a split second.
I saw a car being forced into the central reservation on a dual carriageway the other day (A34). Car in the inside lane just randomly diverted into the fast lane whilst a car was overtaking.. Made hell of a mess and awful sound.
I was about 300mtrs behind and had plenty of time to slow down, thankfully hardly anything else on the road.
Bit weird, watching a car being pushed into barriers.
I once saw a pickup truck full of watermelons get high sided.
We were coming up behind it in a taxi on the elevated m'way in Bangkok. It did a bit of a speed wobble, skidded around sideways, and then flipped over and over about 5 times. Watermelons flying everywhere. It was amazingly cinematic!
Luckily traffic was light, so our driver stopped and we pulled the driver out. Amazingly he was just a bit battered and bloody - wasn't even wearing a seatbelt. 30 seconds later the whole thing went up in flames.
I once saw a Renault 5 flip over onto its roof, it went past me about 6ft away doing around 50mph, spinning like a top! There was 5 people in it & it was concluded the driver had hit the bend in a 40 zone at about 70. The car behind me said he’d thought I was toast.
Crikey, PoopScoop. That must have been stressful. And what a weird way to end your night.
Years ago, I had recently passed my driving test, and had just bought a little 2nd hand Subaru Justy (great little car). Driving up the M3 on the way back from collecting it, the car in front (yellow fiat panda) had a front wheel blow out, brakes hard and promptly span across two lanes of heavy traffic and the joining slip road. Weirdly didn’t hit anything and i’m assuming was uninjured.
It was a good thing to learn - expect the unexpected.
Someone managed to put their car on it's roof in our street last year. We live in a cul de sac. 😲
Glad everybody was ok Poopscoop.
I've seen two similar incidents.
One was probably 35 years ago when a 2CV rolled from one lane to another on a german autobahn. It was winter and very slippy. The car overtook us pulled in sharp, swerved, hit the barrier and pinballed rolling sideways twice before coming to a rest on its wheels.
4 women in the thing and all ok - very perculiar and lucky.
The other was a lot more recent when I was driving down the M57 from Manchester heading towards the peaks.
Coming onto the motorway in the other direction was a Volvo C90 (i think) convertable. There was a cloud of dust then all of a sudden I saw the underneath of the car. All very surreal but somehow it had managed to smack a mud mound at such and angle that it launched the car straight into a backflip.
Stopped quite quickly as the wind caught it then completed the flip landing on its roof in the middle of the road. It looked to be squashed to the door line and I feared the worst for who ever was in it.
Loads of people stopped so I didn't but gave my details to the Police as a witness when I got home. Turned out nobody was seriously hurt thank god. Not sure how though as it looked horrific.
Sure feels slightly surreal and weird watching incidents like this in front of you though.
^^ I’m not doubting you, but a 2CV? I didn’t know they could overtake, let alone be rolled! 🙃
ha, I was only 8 but it was certainly a 2cv. Remember thinking the only damage was the wing mirror had been knocked off its mount.
Think it must have hit at such an angle that it more or less flipped in the air rather than rolled, as I can't imagine rolling a 2CV on its body panels would leave a lot of car after.
Ive seen it happen to 2 cars. Both times the driver was drunk
Saw this happen about 40 years ago , our family were out early on a Sunday going to a swimming baths when the car in front of us went to overtake the car in front but clipped the rear corner as it started the manoeuvre. The car it clipped was an Austin Princess ,it just rose up on its front end bounced on its roof and back onto its wheels . Luckily the people in the car were wearing belt even though it wasn't compulsory back then .
The car that caused the accident tried to do a runner but my dad chased them down (tweaked V6 engine/petrol head dad) and suggested it would be a good idea to go back. Everyone was OK just a bit shook up.
Its a weird thing to see like everything goes into slow motion.
A friend of mine's parents have a largish house in its own grounds next to a bend on a country lane. They average about one car a year on its roof in their front garden rotating slowly.
They've got blase about it now. "We've got another one. You ring the police, I'll get the kettle on."

Theyre not Jeremy Clarkson, are they?
Plodding down the M6 on the inside lane a car over took us in the middle lane and then a yellow Fiat Coupe went past in the outside lane. The middle lane car then went to overtake a car in front and clipped the Fiat which I am guessing was in his blind spot. The Fiat took off and flipped over nose to tail about 3 times 30 feet in the air at one point, crossing the three lanes and ended up spinning on it's roof on the hard shoulder narrowly missing an overhead bridge. We were the first car to stop.We turned the car over but couldn't open the door to get the driver out as it was jammed shut beacuse the roof had been crushed down on it.Fuel was p88sing out everywhere and the driver was starting to panic. My mate who was a mechanic disconnected the battery ,apparently this lowers the risk of fire and then when a few more guys had stopped we managed to wrench the door open and get the driver out.He seemed fine and asked somone if they could get his briefcase out of the boot! Could have been a whole lot worse.
Saw a Peugeot 106 spin, flip and come to rest upside down balanced the armco on the A26 just outside Calais - most impressive, the driver and passenger climbed-out somewhat bemused
On my mother’s first visit to Germany we were on our way to Dresden in busy traffic on the Autobahn when two cars about 200m in front of us started swerving together into the central barrier then across the three lanes onto the grass bank on the side of the Autobahn then the one car, a VW Sharan, flipped spectacularly into the air and landed spinning on its roof then burst into flames. I was so shocked I just froze. Luckily a few people in front of us had their wits about them and jumped out with fire extinguishers and put out the fire.
Where I grew up there was a 2 mile straight followed by a t junction with Love Cottage opposite. Love Cottage had Armco back in the 80's. I've been back recently and the house has been demolished and rebuilt at the far side of the plot. The Armco remains.

Car driver behind must have thought you'd end up Brown Bread... 😉
Somebody flipped a courtesy car from a garage onto its roof in my office car park a few years ago after cutting across a parking bay with a retractable bollard in place. The bollard bent to a perfect 45 degree angle before the car rolled straight over.
Driving east out of Braemar along the Dee, at the edge of town there are fields where the Highland games are hosted. There was a high fence a bit like those you'd see around a tennis court. The approach to town concealed a bend which in the twilight looked like a straight into town if you were teased by the street lights.
Seconds before we reached the bend, a small white van suddenly realised the 'straight' was in fact a 90 degree bend, skidded, over corrected, then flipped and barrel rolled along the fence ending up just in front of us.
I remember the noise then the silence as we jumped out and rushed to help. The car's only occupant was a girl who had been helping at a wedding. The van contained and ironing board and an iron which had flailed around as the car rolled, thankfully missing the driver. She walked away but was terrified by what she'd have to say to her dad about what had happened to his van.
I was stopped at the end a small lane that joined a main road. An Astra had stopped in the middle to turn into the lane. An AX was very nearly stopped behind it but offset slightly to the left when a 309 ploughed into the back of it punting it into the Astra. It then bounced off at an angle on to the bank of the cutting the road ran through where it barrel rolled a couple of times ripping off the tailgate and bonnet. The young chap got out white as a sheet but uninjured.
The way the AX accelerated while the 309 stopped dead amazed me. Also the front of the 309 was demolished while the the Astra had a small dent in the rear bumper.
.
My favourite had to be the police car I saw come steaming into a public car park and hitting a particularly high curb square on and making it over it but bursting both front tyres. The driver looked around and saw me and my mates pissing ourselves laughing and just drove off tyres flapping..
I was in an accident in late 90s where the car rolled a couple of times and stopped on its side!
Driver’s fault. He had just got his license. Took a corner too fast and lost control.
There were 5 of us crammed in the car. How none of us were seriously injured is a mystery. I came off worst (typically) with a cracked sternum. Actually got knocked out for a few seconds and when I came round everyone was already out the car (apart from me). I couldn’t breathe for what felt like and eternity because Id been winded so badly. That was pretty scary.
I've had the misfortune to see a few and be in one! They always seems to be in slow motion for a split second. The last one I saw , a car drove into the central reservation near shap , pitch dark and no other cars on the road. I pulled onto the hard shoulder to phone emergency services , they told me to leave the scene. I still feel guilty about that, as the driver was flashing his lights and tooting horn in distress as I drove off.

Thats just bizarre. Why would they, why would you do that?

I imagine they aren't keen on the public running about on the M6, could easily end up with a lot of casualties.
"they aren’t keen on the public running about on the M6, could easily end up with a lot of casualties." That's pretty much exactly what they said.
I rolled a car once. It pissed me (and my boss, it was a company car) off, (but it didn't change my life.)
Stupid low speed roll after trying to overtake some old numpty crawling along and losing it on a bend. Thing I remember most is all my cassette tapes tumbling around my head.
I’ve been involved in a car flip. Crazy experience that I found thrilling at the time. In my defence I was an idiotic teenager and the adrenaline well and truly kicked in. As per the post earlier, new driver taking a corner way too fast. We skidded on the roof for a fair distance too.
The lad driving was in tears and the front seat passenger had a couple of cuts. The three of us in the back were badly bruised. Police said we were lucky there were no serious injuries.
Didn't see it but went past about two minutes later. Some lad whose car (Subaru Impreza) outstripped his ability managed to lose it and flipped the car end over end several times along a stone wall, there were five "fresh" dips in the top of the wall, before coming to a stop in a field! Amazingly he walked and apart from a few bruises uninjured. I've no idea what speed he was doing to lose it where he did but it was about 100 metres from first impact on the wall to where the car ended up.
Rolled my Mk 1 Cortina when I was 18, slid to a halt on it's roof right outside our old house. An old neighbour was first to get to the car, looked in at me hanging upside down from the seatbelt and said 'oh, it's you!'...
It had already been on it's side a month before down a country lane where I misjudged a Y junction and went straight up the bank in the middle. There was a moment of silence before it slid off onto the drivers side. Spent the rest of the day filling all the dents in from the stones in the road.
