Anyone been?

If so, any recommendations on any of the following?
Bike shops
Restaurants (Informal, but good food please!)
Bars (Preferably with good local stuff on tap/bottle)
Stuff to see (Apart from urinating on the Alamo Cenotaph, obviously!)
Downtown boot shops (Might treat myself to a pair of work boots, so would be good to know of somewhere that's got a big range)

Thanks, y'all!

I was there in 05, so may not be relevant 🙂 Riverwalk is nice for restaurants and bars, mexican and bbq are popular, there's a bbq place out of town that's worth a look..sorry can't remember the name, locals will know, there's a retail outlet place that's massive, its on the highway on the way to Austin, that's about all I can remember...Alamo is worth a look, and they are really strict on public urination, bars etc will not let you in for a piss and the police do not see the funny side...A good way to spend an evening is to get out of town a bit and take your chances in some "hole in the wall" type bars...an English accent seems to go down well 🙂

I was there just last year.

As mentioned the river walks is the main place to go especially if its hot. There are plenty of decent eateries around there and its a good place to people watch.

The Alamo was an anticlimax but worth a visit. If you have a weekend to kill I highly recommend heading to Austin. If you do you absolutely must go to Uchi for some of the best Japanese food you will find anywhere plus amazing bbq joints and food trucks.

The shopping place mentioned above is San Marcos, the place is huge but you can pick up some bargains.

Have fun!

Think there are a few less chain type places at the Pearl Brewery area.

Have only ever done the river-walk...and to be honest it's all a blur. But I did enjoy the Alamo.

I guess the Alamo from the film is in Brackenridge park if you're interested.

The Alamo is completely underwhelming - shouldn't it be sitting out on some craggy bluff, staring defiantly at Mexico ... and there is it is crammed in next to Taco Bell and the Laura Croft Experience?

Riverwalk is nice for restaurants and bars,

As a Texan told me "only in Tx could they take an open sewer and turn it into a tourist attraction" 😆 all my info's is out of date as it's 20 years since I lived there
BUT it is a good place to hang out and The Alamo just looks like a little mud house suitable for peeing against (especially after a few of the large Margerita's down at the Riverwalk).

Try to get out of the city & up into the Guadelupe Mtn's - floating down the river with a few beers is a great way to spend an afternoon with friends.

EDIT - Austin is great and also Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico too
