I had a cunning plan to modify my non-3G Chromebook, by hiding a USB 3 stick in it as there is a load of space in the chassis around where the 3G PCB would go. This would involve butchering the stick and hard-connecting it to the USB 3 wiring inside.
The plan is to whack the machine into Developer mode and dual boot with Ubuntu ARM 🙂
I have received my stick, but am having problems with it. After a copy operation or two [plugged in normally at this point] I get errors like failed copies and undeletable files in both the USB2 and 3 ports. Sometimes it won't even mount 🙁
The funny thing is the stick seems to work OK on my PC in a 2.0 port now. But when I tried to do a full format on it [first port of call with copy errors] it hung once, and completed another time.
Anyone else using a 3.0 stick in these machines with better results? Is it a bad stick or a bad implementation by Samsung? The ports seem to work fine with other sticks, mice and phones and suchlike.
The stick is an Adata S102, if that's anything to do with it. And when it works I'm only getting 16MB/S transfer too!

Sounds like a duff stick to me, especially if other peripherals are working okay.
Not got any other 3.0 stuff, hence confused. Also I have read about the Chromebook's 3.0 port being a bit duff.
I'll try to get some other sticks to test it with.

Probably a crap stick. Flash memory in USB sticks is in general the rejects from the rejects...there's a reason it's much cheaper than say an SSD.
When you do hack a stick in there, make it easily replaceable so when it starts going tits up you can just swap it out with another.

Yes, but I don't want to return it and have it test OK and then have to pay 2x postage costs!
For the internal connection, are you just coming off an internal motherboard header? That would be best, and just use a tiny usb stick (with open end) and solder onto the connector tracks if they'll take it.
Otherwise, sounds like your usb stick itself is unreliable.
dave - yes that is my intention. I've only seen pics so far, have to open it up to get the full story and i'll not do that 'till it is booting happily from the drive for a few weeks - as I'll be chucking my warranty out the window 😉
