Reed, the employment agency, on this page say that the average sales assistant wage is £23k. That sounds like a lot. Anyone know of sales assistants who get that much?
Are there other jobs with that definition besides people who work in Next or whatever? Surely sales assistant is a min wage job?
Employment agency in inflated wage expectations shocker!
I think there's something up with those stats because there are higher grade jobs listed with lower wages. Must be some higher grade jobs that have attracted the same titles or fallen into the same category or something.
Mafs innit.

Minimum wage is about £16k on a 40 hour week. £23k is about £10 an hour on same basis?
So doesn't sound wildly outrageous when you consider people working in higher value shops would get the same title.
£10/h seems to be reasonable to me* esp including upped rate for evenings or weekends. however £23k/y doesnt seem to match with reality. Have they taken a zero hours hourly rate and multiplied by 40h x 47 weeks so they can list as an annual salary?
* I never did this as a youth, I mowed fields and did gardening for the inflation adjusted similar amount or slightly more per hour.
why should a sales assistant be min wage anyway ?
I mean we all moan when the sales assistant isnt skilled enough to answer our question but if your paying min wage you get min wage skills.
example go to primark - you dont get the same level of assistance as you do when you go to slaters.
Minimum wage is about £16k on a 40 hour week.
If you don't give them a break? A week is 37.5 hours v
Also, you might have people working for minumum wage but doing 60-70 hour weeks.
The bloke who runs the corner shop at the end of my street is there from 6 am to 10 pm most days.
*A week is 37.5 hours *
according to who ?
I know of Managers of clothing retailers with salary's high twenty's to mid-30's - London/South England.
It's not an industry delivering top salary's. Naff hours etc.
I'm in the South East and don't know anyone in retail earning that much. My wife used to be a concession manager for a large clothing brand and earnt a lot less than 23k!
23K? Pah, you could be a prison officer & get that for doing shifts (inc nights & bank hols as well as Xmas/NY, get assaulted, abused, puked on & potentially save the odd life. (& that's just dealing with other staff!)
Mind you the overtime rate is currently £22 an hour.
it's not sales assistant in a bike shop i can tell you that!

Unless of course they get paid for their breaks .. the places I previously worked 40 hrs was a typical working week.
Some of the sales assistants in the likes of NEXT are on a lot less than £7.50 per hour ... as low as £3.30 for some with different job titles such as Apprentice sales person.
I am a sales assistant.
I get more.

assistant in this case I guess means assisting the customer, rather than the implication of a junior role. 'sales manager' I would guess manages a team, but I can't think of a 3rd title that fits in the middle.
Don't think a primark / next employee has ever said a word to me on the floor, even at the checkout they cant manage a full sentence. Homebase/wickes type place and usually I get a brief conversation, ask what I want to do and sometimes get a bit of advice.
Buying a coat in a "fashion" shop, climbing shoes from Cotswolds and ski boots from a sports shop I've had a personal shopper for 20 minutes, fetching me different sizes, discussing the benefits of different designs. very enjoyable experience as shopping goes. Mountain Trax got 100 quid out of me last week when I probably would have left empty handed and frustrated and gone to wiggle had I not received some help. I hope all these guys got a lot more than min wage (mountain trax probably pay in bike parts, not money), as they are well worth double a grumpy primark stock re-arranger.

It is where I work, at any rate. </anecdote>
(I am not a sales assistant)

Yes but that's not normal at all far from it.

Employment law.
Employment law.
What specific law?
My contract specifies a 40 hour week.
My contract specifies that maximum 48 hour a week limit imposed by the Working Time Directive does not apply unless I give them 3 months written notice to opt out of that condition.
Good for you but the average working week is 37.5.
Is that a law is it? An actual Law? 😉
'Sales Assistant' is such a broad term, maybe they don't put much stock in giving people who don't manage anything 'management' titles because they're good at it?
Anyway, Tesco pay £8 an hour, they're probably a good yard stick for what most people think of as Sales Assistants, the local Porsche Garage was advertising for a Salesperson for a couple of months at the start of the year, I think they were offering £42k and a Car.
Aye sorry maybe I'm off with law bit and hours but 9-5 5 days a week with legal minimum breaks is 37.5 not 40.
Latest data is 37.0 hours from ONS for "Average actual weekly hours of work for full-time workers (seasonally adjusted)".
Legal minimum breaks used to be 20 minutes in 6 hours no?

Nothing for 6 hours but yes as I know what you mean. So sorry with a 30 minute break per day.
