As stability, Law and order were brought to the Border region following the accession of James I to the throne in 1603, the activities of the Border Reivers gradually came to an end. Some of the most troublesome reivers were transported to Northern Ireland but many of the reiver's descendants became keelmen on Tyneside or Northumberland and Durham pitmen. Some emigrated to Australia and America and of course the first man on the moon was an Armstrong, descended from the Border Reivers of that name.

So at some point Alexander Armstrong off the telly is related to Neil Armstrong!

I knew Alexander was from up that way even if he does now talk posh (in comparison to a pit yacker)

George McDonald Fraser, author of Flashman, wrote a very readable book on this topic - The Steel Bonnets

In the introduction to The Steel Bonnets, Fraser writes about watching an event on US TV where Billy Graham, Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson were on stage together. All descendants of notorious Border reiving families...

There's a map in the book showing where the various families lived in the 16th century and they haven't moved far since then. Most of the clan names around my home area were the same people I went to school with.

It's a very good read, about a period when the Border region seems to have been largely outside the control of the authorities. Thousands of cattle being stolen, scorched earth tactics, everyday murder and mass hangings. I think "blackmail" and "hot pursuit" both derive from the reiver period.

Being a Hodgson ..we were also a Border Reiver clan ..originating on the English side in Cumbria .

As far as I can ascertain my Dad was the first person to use this as a company name back in the mid sixties when forming the Reivers of Tarset Ltd.

Hodgson means the ' son of Hodge ' and is apparently a pet name of 'Roger '..which I'm led to believe we did a lot of back in the day ..🤣..

I am  Reiver (Elliot mostly) traced directly back to Liddersdale- I have inherited all their worst qualities.

It took two countries England and Scotland to finally kick our arses out of Northumberland.

We are neither English or Scots we are Borderers.
