Going on our hollybobs on Tuesday and looking at Ryanair's rules. So a rucksack has to be 40*25*20cm and we have a couple of rucksacks that are slightly more than this. For example an 18l Osprey which is less than 25*20 but due to the rigid back is more like 45cm long. Is this going to be a problem? Rucksack won't be stuffed as we have two small cases going in the hold. The other rucksack is a 27l Decathlon which doesn't have a rigid back so I'm pretty confident it'll be ok.
Can you take the rigid bars out and put in hold luggage?
I'm sure the oversize cabin luggage will be fine - Ryanair are famously relaxed about these things.
Will the rucksack fold over if it's not too full? I carry a 22l Osprey Talon bag on Ryanair flights (as well as the normal carry on luggage). Never been questioned.
I few to Dublin with Ryan air a few weeks back.
Noone had their hand luggage checked.
I'd checked mine was -exactly- inside the dimensions.
I had a bag with compression straps. I decompressed it a free flying.
What about your almost correct size bag with a fat strap to get to the states size?
I would spend 5 min checking in prefrance €60 to have it put in the hold each way.
Will the rigid back fit in the virtual cube diagonally? Basic pythag suggests you have 47cm to play with
I'd risk it, I never get checked on bags that are reasonable, full size cabin baggage yes
Used RyanAir a few times over the last year or so and no problems with slightly oversize hand luggage. I also always check in before hand online.
There is a virtual baggage thingy you can use on the RyanAir app to check against but not much cop tbh.
I used to worry about it but Ryan do seem a little more flexible than say Flybe who were down to the mm
Watched a few people get stuck for over size fees at the next door gate coming back from PMI a few weeks back, they weren’t happy but they had wheelie carry on so obvs too big
If it helps I flew Ryanair last month with an Osprey Nebula (32l) which is 49x31x29cm and it was stuffed full for a 4 day trip. Didn't have any issues, but YMMV!
I've made sure I have exactly the right size carry on bags for my easyJet flight on Wednesday. I've heard they can be ruthless.
I'm always pretty strict as the fees are so high but then everyone else seems the have loads of luggage without any issues.
I have never had a rucksack checked, the gate people are normally too busy busting people with over sized not squishable suitcases!
As long as it fits under the seat in front it should be fine. That's where the small bags have to go
Did an Easyjet and 3 Ryanair flights recently on a work trip. No bags were checked. Ryanair is a flying bus though with Easyjet being luxury in comparison.
Ryanair is 70 euros penalty for oversized hand luggage at alicante, I ve seen a few people get done. For me, it's just not worth the risk. I use the supermarket tote bags as they always squash down if checked.
I’ve not flown Ryanair recently but they’ve been bit hotter on easyJet and loganair. If you can jam it in the basket by the check in desk or gate seems to be the test.
I fly both Ryanair and easyJet regularly for work. Imo it’s a lottery. I’ve seen people’s bag sizes checked on both airlines, but it’s sporadic. I assume that it is like most businesses, and every so often, the staff receive a rattling from higher up and have a push on some aspect of their business.
but if there is an issue, AFAIK, the rule is that it has to fit into the framework at the gate. If you can fit it in there - all should be good, diagonally or not. But if it doesn’t fit, from what I saw, then there is no arguing possible.
Flew Ryanair back in Sept last week from Man - Dublin. No-one checked my carry on at either end, but I think it's because both flights were delayed by at least an hour so they just wanted to get us on quick and get going.
Son1 had his checked last flight. Being a Patagonia mini ML it was designed as exactly the correct size. And it was. Son2 has been charged in the past. Easy jet measured on their last EZY flight too. I would add compression if needed.
Well….. I flew Ryanair with the folded down Talon rucksack that I mentioned up there ^^^ last Sunday.
It was not checked at all and we boarded without any hassle at the gate. That might have been down to the fact that the flight was delayed 8 1/2 hours at that point. They were quite keen to get us through.
So… the question now is how long for Ryanair compensation? We did the Ec261 form when we returned….. shall we start a sweep?
Reason for the delay? Was it something they could have planned for? Don’t expect any cash soon!
We got a couple of convertible Cabin Max rucksacks. Goes from rucksack to wheelie trolly. Held enough for 6 days in Amsterdam. Easy Jet proof. You get more checking on the way out. We came back with a load of cheese (in an already full bag) and some fancy brandy, but no-one checked we were carrying a bit much.
I've never seen anyone stopped for a rucksack, I guess they think you'll just squash it into the measuring thing if pushed. The hard shell suitcases I've seen them stop people for. I reckon you'll be fine. If you are wearing the rucksack as you board I doubt they'll even look at it

This x100
Flown Ryanair a few times, they haven’t even checked. I’m not saying they won’t check you, but it seems they’re pretty relaxed about it. Just came back from Dublin yesterday, had pre-booked priority boarding with an extra case for the £24 fee up front… They didn’t even check that! I could probably have got on board with my hard case and my rucksack without even paying the upcharge. That said, work was paying, not worth the risk. I would however risk a slightly oversized rucksack no problems.
Been a while since I’ve flown easyjet, but I have witnessed them sporadically checking bags before.
I once took an 80L vango rucksack as carry on* 😀
*I'd removed the metal bars and back insert though and it was only about 1/4 full, so it would have squished /rolled up if needed to fit into the measuring thingy.
These says though, with ryan air, I buy the extra carry on as mentioned above as hold luggade is really expensive.
A 20L Day pack backpack, and a hard case that is literally a couple of mm in each direction under the allowed size.
Well now…. A response from Ryanair after the delay and subsequent claim a couple of posts up there. Confirmation that it’ll be settled in full and payment within a couple of weeks. I can very much live with that!
Basically a free break then!

My daughter had a flight cancelled by Ryanair last year (I think it was) and they were pretty quick to settle up. And just today flew Brussels to Madrid with them, and FWIW I didn't see them check any carry on bags (and the flight was full).
