Hi,
I'm flying with Ryanair in the not too distant future and was hoping for some advice with cabin luggage. Website says up to 10KG and within 55x40x20cms.
I was toying with using my usual rucksack whose main body is within these dimensions, but as it's a soft bag it probably slumps into a slightly shorter and wider shape when not carried.
As long as the bag can be shaped into those dimensions are you OK, or will they sting me for extra luggage costs?
Similarly my wife's travel bag is within those dimensions but widthways rather than hight-wise. The pics show a vertical bag checker, will she be penalised for having to put it on its end to fit in?
Cheers,

I have travelled with a ruck sack that squashed down to fit.
They seem a bit random with enforcing the cabin luggage rules, seen them be brutal and enforce strictly and other times let things go.
I fly with them a lot and imo you're comfortably fine on both counts.
They have relaxed the rules and enforcements a lot recently - but what you are more likely to see is randomly being 'asked' at the gate to put your carry on bag into the hold (too many bags etc). But if you have lithium batteries, lighters etc in your carry on, or just ask them for a loan bag to carry your valuables, and they'll move on to the next person in the queue.
Thanks both for the comments, hopefully we'll be ok.
FWIW use a Lomo dry bag which is soft and squashy like a rucksack - never had a problem.
If travelling with Ryanair remember to buy sandwiches in the departure lounge to carry on to the flight. Obviously.
Or even take sandwiches / food to the airport, for even more economy 🙂 either way, they must be in your carry on bag, not in a seperate bag from, say, boots or wherever. Thats classed as extra baggage and you'll be asked to pack them or bin them at the gate.
Your bags will be fine I'm sure judging as you describe them.
As long as the bag can be pushed into the measuring device it'll be fine - I once saw someone ramming a bag so hard into it to show it would fit, it did but then they couldn't get it out again.
Can you take grub through security?

You can take food but no liquid through.
A jacket with big pockets is worthwhile too. Load that up instead of the bag.
Well there you go, I thought it applied to food too.

Not anymore, you're allowed your carry on baggage plus one small bag or your duty free purchases. Been like this for a while now.
Sat on a Ryanair plane awaiting taxiing atm - given what I've seen some people bringing with them you'll be fine. I have my laptop bag and a rucksack, no problems. And yes, pre-buy sandwiches if you think you'll need food during the flight.

even on Ryanair? Lots of people were getting shafted in front of me not so long ago. At that point I decided ryanair really were a bag of shite and made the call never to use them again.
They've relaxed their regime and this has had a positive impact on their share price, it's a bit more civilised now and only fifteen quid extra to get those leggy seats at the front.
Thanks very much for all the comments, my minds a bit more at ease now.
I'd seen a few shouty videos on Youtube of people getting told their bags that fit weren't allowed.
I've also noticed that it might depend on the airport/cabin crew as well. On some occasions I was asked if my luggage(same ol' Oakley Sink rucksack) would fit, on other occasions I was greeted and cheered to go through.
Every time I've had the misfortune to fly Ryanair, it's the UK ground staff that seem to have major issues. The other end of the flight has always been fine.
