Having a pre MOT nosey under my 07plate Transhit when I noticed a bit of rust......which then became a whacking great big hole in my sill. And then the same in the other side!
I love having a van, I just ****ing hate Transits. At least I saved the cost of the now cancelled MOT

Get molgrips round. He’ll have that fixed in a jiffy
You knew it was like that, that’s why you tried to palm it off on Molly.

It was perfectly fine at the time of my offer.....
The 'Molgrips Deal' is the still on the table if anyone else is interested?
Is the transit the blurry blue one in the back ground behind the fresh air in the main focus.
No, the blue one appears to be made of something more metallic.
Are you changing your name to RustyFordTransit now ?

My VW transporters have never done that! 😉

That's where the Tranny is heading shovel by shovel full.
Genuinely shocked at how quick it's gone - I prep it for winter every year and keep on top of surface rust but it's blown from the inside out big style. Time to chop it in for use as baked bean cans unless anyone wants a project?
db - you've not had one old enough then. Go and buy a cheap T2 and give it a poke 😉
Or a (not cheap) t3 or t4 even early t5s are showing their age round here

I had a grant's worth of welding done to get my last Transit through an MOT.
Mate spent three and a half on a new gearbox for his T5...
Only one of those was left stuck at the roadside too.
And only one of those will need another grand of welding at its next mot to be fair / scrapping.
The good thing about a transit is you know it's rusty. You just have to find out which of. The rust traps has failed on that particular model.
Why are transits so bad? Would have thought it would be sorted by now

It's a 2007 plate and this would be the first bit of welding it's needed so not done too bad but it's literally like someone has dunked it in the sea and kept it in a sauna since with the amount of rust that's coming from the inside out everywhere.

Its part of the manufacturing process, prior to painting it gets a dunk in the sea to check its well ventilated.
On the other hand, lots of non hobby/fanboi/camper/mohome owned vans of that age are also ****ed. Including VWs, somehow a local has a 5 year old Crafter and it’s got as much rust as paint. Honestly can’t figure out what they’ve done to it as it should still be nearly spotless. Almost like they work as shot blasters and launch boats into the sea with it.
Every time my (2011) goes into the garage I ask them to have a good poke around but I seem to be lucky so far, including yesterday major service. They always seems surprised and comment that it’s a good van, maybe it missed the “dunk” in manufacturing.
Not rust free mind you, but that’s still DIYable. For now….
Why are transits so bad?
its a 14 year old commercial vehicle. They’re not sold as heirlooms.
My old 03 Transit did 300,000 miles - original clutch, just wear and tear stuff. It was properly serviced once a year, cost 200-350 pa. It did start to rust a bit in the last 4 yrs. I had a few spots done, but in the end the paint shop said its rusting in the seams, and I was losing the battle. Given how long it lasted and how cheap it was I was happy. Flogged it without an MOT for £500.
Bought one with 3000 miles on the clock for 16k, so expect that to last over 200,000.

This - they are designed to last 10 years or so, in its intended use everything else will be completely worn out too at that age so not much point the first owner paying extra to protect it further.
Local van breakers is paying £600. If an STWer wants a project its yours for the same - I've just finished a 6month rebuild of our old Volvo I can't be bothered doing this van as well.
Would probably cost <£500 to pass MOT
Bad bits.
I know it will need 2x rear inner sill repairs and nearside lower balljoint for MOT. Possibly exhaust silencer - outer shell has rusted off but it still works as a silencer.
Has occasional sticky EGR as it's only used on short local journeys.
Drivers side manual window winder has stripped teeth.
Various dints/dents random surface rust but other than sills is believed solid.
Good bits.
2 owners from new - I've owned since 2013
Was originally Network Rail welfare van so not thrashed on parcel rounds.
120k miles - bought at 79k.
Serviced every 10k in my ownership with synthetic oil and MannHummel filters. No service history as I spanner myself. Last changed yesterday!!!!
Bonded opening side windows
Bare rear interior
2 new batteries and starter
2 nearly new front decent branded tyres rears have a few mm left.
Has had crank pulley, rear leafs, NS wishbone, discs&pads, rear wheel bearings, handbrake cables, propshaft bearings, droplinks and probably other jobs in my ownership that I've forgotten.

It will cost more on c02/argon mix.
We've all been on the end of the screwdriver of doom
Repair panels are available - if anyone is handy with sparkly hot tools then it's a cheap repair. I just can't be bothered.
It's in Rossendale if anyone wants a look/test drive. Otherwise it's going to the breakers next week when the V5 comes back (had private plates on it)
Sold on eBay for £1200, collected without hassle.
Bought it for £6k in 2013 so financially it's been good if annoying at times.
