There seems to be real irony when a Russian ambassador is assassinated by someone shouting about supporting Syria and Aleppo.
Things just get ever more complex, with ever more misery for the innocent stuck in the war zones.

Supposedly a policeman or posed as one (I wondered how he got in with a gun)

Sky piece with some video of the killer

If we can't trust the police, who can we trust?

Off duty copper apparently.. bloody hell, as if middle eastern and Russian tensions need that, and with turkey being kinda allied to Europe..

Be interesting to see what Putin says or does about it 🙁

Indeed. Took a year to normalise relations after the Turks shot down a Russian fighter jet. Harry hindsight but I am stunned the Ambassador doesn't have a dedicated and vetted personal security detail given the regional tensions

He was a member of the riot police

I'm surprised it's taken this long for Russia's actions in Syria to provoke a response like this.

he will have to react the Russian people seem to be whipped up with a blend of nation pride and mistrust of all other nations.

Mind you, the Turks aren't exactly renowned for taking any shit either.

Basically, we're all going to die. Definitely. I'm going to the pub...

The "rebels" trapped in Aleppo are the group which beheaded a 12yo boy. The whole situation in Syria is a mess, there are no clear "good guys" - all sides are equally culpable with civilans caught in the middle.

Oh Christ! I agree with Jammers again! I hate it when that happens. As a society we appear to have watched too many hollywood Movies and look for ridiculously simplistic good guys/bad guys narratives to massively complex situations.

Theres all manner of proxy wars being slogged out by all manner of nasty psychotic people of all shades (the present Turkish government is pretty diabolical), with all kinds of agendas. With a load of poor bastards in the middle. What we certainly don't need is whats about to happen. More people wading in with their own agendas

Hey ho....

Does Not look like off duty copper. Looks more like close protection officer to me.

Footage of the assassination is pretty clear.

Also suggestions of Franz Ferdinand are just silly.

Russia will do nothing to Turkey as they amongst other reasons have already said this is not a state sponsored act.

The gunman was Mevlut Mert Altintas, a 22-year-old who had been working for the riot police squad in Ankara for the past two-and-a-half years.

22 year old easily influenced? I wonder what he was thinking at the moment he drew his last breath ...

Anyway, I think someone is trying to spark the fire between Turkey and Russia.

I've told you before. It's that eventually I am agreeing with you. I have to be right sometimes.

Not really, it depends which side you are on.

RT blaming the one sided bias of the western media for inciting hatred because of their coverage of Allepo.

They're also covering the state sponsored angle by saying that it's an attempt to prevent the Turkish foreign minister from attending a meeting in Moscow tomorrow.

TBH who cares what Russia thinks - if Nato did it, what are the Russians going to do, start a nuclear holocaust or ban some of their tourists for visiting the west? Like they did with Turkey when they swatted one of their Flankers.

That 2nd album was bad but not that bad.

Turkey is on the cusp of becoming a hardline theocracy in the shape of Iran, we have already seen a failed coup to try to arrest that (ala Egypt recently), its going to get worse, they have a lot of capable military and are close to Europe.

And we thought 2016 was bad.

Nahh ... Russia just have to stand firm behind Assad.

Yes, twice now the Turks shoot others in the back. Once the Flanker and now the Russian Ambassador.

Nato will have to think twice if they think they can walk over Russia.

Nobody wants to be walking over anybody, the posturing and antagonism continues and nobody benifits.

It's unsettling to me that I can view a man's death in a front-page video on a major news site (New York Times).

It's a bit unnecessary isn't it? All of it.

I know 'Unilad' isn't exactly Reuters, but...

Was it all fake?

How many times has history proved that the public have been lied to, to justify something or other - a war perhaps?

I'm no weapons expert but curiosity has gotten the better of me at times and I've seen a few videos of people being shot, they don't go just fall over and die - it's a terribly terribly messy thing.

Was it all fake?

Ignoring the basic premise, the article doesn't really show any concept of critical thought. It's supposedly faked (one assumes by Russia or Turkey as both would have a fair idea of who the ambassador was and where he was going to be) but then they say it's faked to damage relations between the two countries. So we've got three possible "fake" scenarios:

1, Russia fakes it - their ambassador was in on it. Can't ruin the relationship but maybe allows Russia to put pressure on Turkey. Ambassador has to vanish back to Russia and never be seen in public again. Would have been easier to kill him for real.

2, Turkey fakes it - Russia's ambassador is, again, in on it but this time has built an entire career in Russia that is blown on something of little benefit to Turkey. Not sure what Turkey could get from faking it other than saying to the Russians "You can cross our airspace a bit but we want your help to bomb the kurds" which seems unlikely. Would have been easier to kill him for real rather than turn him.

3, Islamic terrorists fake it - As with #2 for the ambassador so it would clearly have just been easier to actually shoot him.

So yep. No idea who benefits from a faked shooting. Everyone would have had an easier life to really kill him too.

Ballistics expert told me these rounds sound like blanks.

There are also no sounds of shell casings hitting the floor,

Not much of a ballistics expert if he doesn't know how a blank round works.

Blanks are basically JUST a shell casing so it could happen but would you hear it over the noise of the video given they fly quite a long way when ejected. Unless I missed your point.

There's an element of 'JFK' about it and some of the points may not tie up with others, but I'm getting the impression that the guy on Unilad is saying the whole thing is a set-up and the video was created as a fake rather than acted out in front of the press. So it could be a pre-recorded sound of blanks firing - but there's little to show that the shooter fired on the video. No casings, not even a puff of smoke.

Have you seen the video of the shooting? It's not on the BBC, but it's on YouTube.

The Russian guy is talking and then suddenly it sounds like a machine gun it's so rapid, the Russian sort of winces and falls over, the only visual clue he's been shot is his collar springing open. No exit wound, no blood. Then there's a lot of stills of the guy sprawled on a pristine white floor - no blood again.

Look where the shooter is relative to the mics and the cameras. He's six to ten feet away from the victim. The ejecting brass may have gone much further still.

No exit wound, no blood. Then there's a lot of stills of the guy sprawled on a pristine white floor - no blood again.

You can trawl through hundreds of horrible videos of people getting shot. Some bleed a lot. Some don't.

Yes we can. If we actually chose to. But we "ordinary folk" haven't done so far, or are too lazy/easily influenced. Hence all the nutters that have coming to the fore throughout history.

There's a thing, learning from history.

I like to think I know a bit about guns (ex Army plus I have a firearms certificate) but I was involved in a shooting a while back and it was nothing like I expected it to be. Initially I had no idea that the noise was actually a gun that had been fired.

Anyhow, moving on, a 9mm pistol round probably wouldn't produce an exit would, especially if its a fragmentation round which is designed not to over penetrate.
Its not like in the movies with blood and gore all over the place.!!

it's statements like this that always makes me scratch my chin re. conspiracy theories.

If you were going to stage it, you'd have fake blood all over the place. That's what people expect and it's easy to do. The idea that major governments/the FSB/whoever would stage a killing, on camera, for the all world to see, and then - oops! - accidentally forget the fake blood, thereby giving the game away for all those sleuthing 6th-formers, just doesn't hold much water for me.

This. It's just like the Charlie Ebdo attack where the policeman was shot and that was with an AK47 type weapon
