Anyone else see the report that "UK drivers spend more than one day a year in traffic" and think that doesn't sound too bad?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-42917201

My local rag was pitching it with a "shocking cost of congestion" kind of line. Seems the wrong way round to me, surely congestion is the cost of our over-reliance on cars and lack of flexible working.

Hmmm.. yeah.

Huge data spread, captured then applied over the U.K. population?

Thats not really a fair representation is it.

Quick calc shows I spend 4 days of my life a year stuck in traffic just getting to my current client 21 miles away!

I'm always surprised when I visit other towns ans cities and see how many people are prepared to sit miserably in their cars. I cycle to work, I live in London đŸ˜‰
But even so, that time accounts to very little time per day based on 46 working weeks a year.

31 hours a year?

That's only about 8 minutes for each working day.

I probably spend more time each day  waiting at the 5 sets of traffic lights on my 18 mile each way  totally  congestion free commute.

Doesn't seem right.

The Empress roundabout in Harrogate is reckoned to be the busiest roundabout in the UK outside the M25. Not entirely sure how true this is mind but it get jammed.
I'm slowly learning the rat runs around town as waiting in jams in a minibus is no fun when you have people on with certain disabilities!

I assumed this was just some marketing puff piece from a construction/motoring lobbying firm, and duly ignored it.

Plenty of people have the option to cycle; if they get stuck in traffic while driving, then it's their choice.

Was this the survey they talked about on the BBC this morning? From what I heard (I was chewing crunchy cereal at the time) their best solutions were more roads and bigger roads. Yeah, well done. That's exactly what the country needs.

Me too. It's produced by Inrix, a data firm specialising in traffic & transport issues - so perhaps not agitating for more roadbuilding.

Agreed. The tone seems to be "look at this awful problem, aren't we so unfortunate" rather than "why do we do this to ourselves".
