After years of cycling i know how important the right undergarments are for being comformatble and avoiding chaffing on a long day out.

But when it comes to running i'm not sure what to be wearing.
iv'e tried various cheap compression shorts/boxers and although better than my standard thong briefs, they still don't feel great after 10-13miles

I may be running a marathon this weekend so want to minimise the chances of my clothes beign the limiting factor in my endurance

What do the proper athletes wear? Those with those teeny tiny shorts, what goes underneath?

What do marathon runners wear and with what kind of short combos?

Hints/tips anyone, or is it just get out the vaseline and lube up.

My mate who runs marathons, just goes commando with decent running shorts that have a liner.

I don't wear anything under my running shorts, they already come with a liner that gives sufficient support. And if I'm using running tights it's because it's cold out and there's not going to be much on show anyway 🙂

For longer runs I've got some Salomon compression shorts which are very comfortable, they have a lycra liner with a shorts outer.

I'd be wary of trying out anything new on marathon day, but I'm sure you're aware of the risk. But new or old, vaseline is your friend.

I was running in Budgie smuggler type underpants but in the last month started using Decathlon running shorts with the built in liner and the freedom feels great in comparison and stops you getting too hot and sweaty around there.
Never needed any cream around the groin with the running shorts but still use a chamois cream to avoid chaffing around my nipples and where the HRM belt clips together.

Can't help with the main question but this works better than vaseline in my experience, stays useful for longer and is less messy.

I like your casual attitude. You would be surprised how seriously some people take running 26.2 miles.

Eh? Nothing. Either shorts that have a thin liner, or tracksters.

Used to use budgie smuggler type pants underneath with normal running lycra shorts or tights over the top. Most running specific with built in jobs don't have enough support for me but triathlon shorts seem to be much better in general. Rubbing on seams is the other big issue I've found both with some pants and also some shorts/tights. I have significant scar tissue in my inner thighs (at crotch height) from running on in competitions (mainly triathlons) with rubbing and removing all the skin in that area. Large quantities of vaseline is a priority for me.

or tracksters.

Tracksters on their own wouldn't work for me - bruised gonads from all the bouncing and ripped to bits by the seems on the inside.

Blimey, how much "support" do you need in that area? Feeling a little inadequate now 😳

Salomon - their new twin-skin shorts are brilliant.
Wiggle have them in the warehouse moving sale at the moment - seriously reduced 😀

Skins A400 tights. Brilliant.

I also put on afterwards the compression socks, seem to work well for me with post race recovery. Even the ones you get from hospital for an op are good!
