1) If you are a regular runner, how many miles/km or hours do you do a week?

2) Is 20km 3 times a week excessive or reasonable for a fit and healthy and suitably experienced runner, or is that likely to cause a problem long term? (Not me I hasten to add).

Running 20km 3 times a week isn't the best way to structure one's training in terms of getting faster, but it's a long way from being excessive mileage. Average mileage for a decent club runner might be (massive generalisation coming up) 50-60 miles a week.

Everyone is different so whos to say...

A mate of mine will regularly run much further than that every week.

Not for me. Just a discussion I overheard at work left me wondering what people do. (And which of my colleagues is talking bollocks!)

I run between 10k and 30k per week, depending on how much riding ive managed to fit in.

Around 45 miles per week if I'm taking it easy.

I'm currently doing about 12 to 14 miles per week, 2x4 mile, and a 5 or 6 on a Saturday morning.
I'm not training for anything just now, just ticking over really. I've ran a couple of marathons, and training for that could see me doing up to about 35 to 40 miles a week.

Generally aim to fit 3 10k's in a week but it often ends up being 2, especially if I've been out night riding.

I used to run competetively, middle distance in the summer and cross country in the winter. Trained 5-6 times a week, including a weekly 10 mile run in winter, and hardly ever went over 35 miles a week - quality not quantity unless you're training for the marathon or similar.

i don't know about distance but about 3.5 hours a week, mostly hilly trail runs and intervals.

as has been suggested, 3 x 20k sounds like a dumb plan to follow.

1x10km, hate running really, just do it to keep fit and to keep me fairly competitive in endurance type racing. Havent really got time to do anymore, not that I'd want to!

Running's mainly a winter's evening activity for me. I do kayaking in the summer when the days are longer.

I do my running by time rather than mileage.

I'm currently doing 25 minutes twice a week followed by 15 minutes of stretching. In previous years I'd try running every other day but would get a frantic if I missed a run (due to domestic commitments, tiredness, etc) Running twice a week is a better target for me, and anyway, I get to cycle to work 'n back three or four days a week so I'm getting the exercise & endomorphin quota in.

When I was training for the OMM, this time a year ago, I was doing 120 minutes offroad runs twice a week and really enjoying it. However, I had achilles tendonitis in February (caused by cycling, not running) and don't want to chance it again so I'm slowly increasing my running time by 10 percent every fortnight.

20KM three times a week sounds well nutty unless you're in the last stages of training for an ultra-marathon. You only get one set of cartlidge and one pair of knee caps handed out to you in yer lifetime. 🙁

Thank you. I shall try and find a diplomatic way to pass that on.

Are you saying that running 12 miles 3 times a week can damage these? I am not sure there is evidence for this. Unless you know of any?

My training some years ago was more structured but I also ran 12 miles 3 times a week because I lived 12 miles from work and those were the days I ran home.
