Don't running shorts normally have a built in pair? Mine all do.

Wwaswas, They can be ok, but i dont find the "brief" style inner bits hugely comfortable on long runs. Maybe something more like a boxer or lycra short sans pad?

I use Under Armour compression shorts, during the summer to, erm, keep things in check, under my Gore Ultra shorts with liners**. During the winter I use Skins tights, which seem to do the task of, erm, keeping things in check, by themselves.

** I can wear the Gore shorts by themselves as the liners are pretty good, but I noticed one day that I was, ahem, showing a little too much, so I now wear my compression shorts under.

Edit:

Maybe something more like a boxer or lycra short sans pad?

The latter is what my Gore Ultra shorts have.

If wearing shorts with a built in liner, then I don't wear any underwear.
But if wearing tights/tracksters, then I think its worth wearing something, especially in colder weather. Also means you don't have to wash the tights after every run.

I like these More Mile seamless boxers, cheap enough and comfy for me anyway. http://www.startfitness.co.uk/mens/clothing/underwear/more-mile-proformance-seamless-boxer-mm1355.html

No pants underneath running kit, it's the rule.

I got chafed when using standard running shorts with a liner so wore a pair of the longer lycra running shorts which kept my thighs apart 😯 and then standard running shorts on top. No problems after that

Normal old fashioned tight pants to keep things in check. Then lycra shorts - used to stop the thighs from chaffing for any runs over a couple of hours.

For the record: When I run in Skins, I wear shorts over the top. I'm not that unkind

None - compression shorts under the running shorts works for me.

I've recently been sporting some x-bionic running biffs.

Seem to work a treat. Not cheap though. If you are in between sizes go smaller.

I wear Lycra shorts or tights when running and all is well with these.

Used some decathlon kalenji ones for a few years, which were really good. Then one day they chafed for no apparent reason. Maybe just wore through a bit of seam. They lasted a few years of lots of running!

Andy,

These are by far and away the best I've ever found http://www.likeys.com/acatalog/X-Bionic-EnergizerGentsBoxer.html#SID=1430

Just the built in ones for short runs, but anything over a couple of miles I run in normal cycling shorts with pads in. I did the Birmingham half marathon in October and planned to buy some proper running Lycra shorts but tried running in bib shorts and baggy liners and they were fine. I ran the actual half in some cheap nalini bibs and had no soreness whatsoever.

+1 on the Under Armour compression shorts. They keep everything in place, don't bunch up and don't chafe which is all I can ask for.

Duathlon/triathlon shorts here - the ones with a small pad. It helps that I have several of them because I do (did?) multisport, but I realised that I found them far more comfortable than normal lycra running shorts when just running, so rarely wear anything else nowadays (with tights over the top when it's cold.
