Having foolishly signed up to do a running race next March, I find myself already behind in my training.

The best time for me to run is on the way home, but I have lost the waist straps from my current rucksack, which means when I try and run, it does its best to try and leap over my head and kill me as I waddle along.

Man logic dictates I therefore need a new one.

I was considering an Osprey Talon 22 (like the idea of the helmet toggle for when I'm on the bike) and the straps look comfortable and well padded. Probably can't go much smaller than about 18L owing to the stuff I need to carry (thankfully not a computer though).

Any other recommendations? I think decent straps and padding are preferable than other bells and whistles...

Salomon do decent ones if you are set on a rucksack. I bought an Ultimate Direction running vest and it is 100x better. I was a sceptic but couldn't imagine running in a pack again, unless you are carrying 20kg of kit every night.

OMM sacs sit nice and tight to the back. I use the 15 in the mountains. Can you minimise what you carry by leaving a work pair of shoes, etc?

Vest isn't an option as it'll be shoes, clothes, papers sometimes.

Sometimes  - it varies, so flexibility is good - will check it out, thanks.

One I wouldn't recommend is the Raidlight pack I bought, the Responsiv 20l. Very comfortable but all your sweat condenses into the main compartment...

Various Omm and inov8 packs have worked well for me but I’m out of date with current offerings.

One thing worth doing though is trying them on first. There’s a fair amount of difference between fit/styles etc.
