You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
OK, on tonight's 10k felt really slow, and legs felt heavy. Breathing OK, only got a sweat on 'cause it's so warm. Could run ok, just no energy. No pain anywhere.
serious? or just give it a rest for a couple of days.
Although, have done lots last weekend and last week. maybe just tired?
Plus a Bonus rantette.
Yes, they are my legs, and yes I've got a skirt on, it's not so ****ing unbelievable, you don't have to make excuses to come to my desk and pretend to talk to me. Even Andy (lovely delivery driver) wolf whistled from across the yard.
Men.... 🙄 boys in bigger clothes.
Ahhhh, we are a shy bunch, legs just turn us to goo 😀
Same here on a 6 miler today, but i went out about 2 pm and it was well warmer than i was used to. But i always put it down to being " one of those days " when i feel arse. Go and have a good feed, chill out and all will be good tomorrow. 😀
Men.... boys in bigger clothes.
God, they don't buy their clothes from Jacamo do they!!!??!
Re' the running, probably accumulation from the past 10 days or so. Fire an email over, I can sort it.
This thread is useless, etc.
I've been out on a couple of runs now since the weather picked up, first time I've run since, uh, Autumn and it shows. Only did a couple of miles and I was knackered afterwards. Hopefully I'll get back into the groove a bit once I've got a few done.
Incidentally Emsz, what sort of time are you looking at for your 10k's?
iDave what do you want to know? 30k or so a week, a 5k a 10k two 5's then another 10k, eat pretty much normal food. drink too much.
Cougar, about* 46mins, fastest was 45.33 pleased and guttted at the same time. want to get under 45 mins.
* not that I'm particular about writing down my times, that would be well weird... *ahem*
Holy hell.
First ever 10k I ran I did in an hour flat. I've yet to beat that in any sort of 'race condition' kind of way.
On the one hand I'm built to run (so people keep telling me), on the other I'm bone idle and lack any sort of commitment to things like "training." That 60m 10k was after half a dozen practice runs but otherwise cold, last time I ran prior to that was cross-country at school.
I've run the Manchester 'Great North Run' a handful of times now, each time I sign up I think "what the hell have I just done" but it does provide some of the motivation that I otherwise desperately lack. This year I missed the signups (again) so I've signed my life away to the Sheffield one instead.
A few mates are trying to get me to do the Wincle Trout Run, which is a "challenging" ~9km fell race. I'm tempted but I have the fear.
ObDisclaimer, I Am Not A Runner.
emsz, I'm happy to email you some useful info
Thing is Cougar, once I start doing something, I'm pretty relentless about it. Been running every week now since about November. Times were rubbish when I started, I just try to run faster each time.
That's just 10k though, run my 5k slowly, never time that.
iDave, Mail....
See, I'm kinda the same, I just frustrate easily. I'm *massively* competitive, but, only against myself. I pretty much concede that everyone is going to be better at stuff than I am(*), so there's little point in competing unless it's something I really enjoy(**).
A good positive example would be climbing. I got properly gripped by climbing a few years ago because apart from being massively enjoyable it was something that I could directly and immediately see an improvement on. I was naturally "reasonable" to start with (like running) because I'm a wirey little git who weighs nothing; climbing at the same venue meant that I could see a natural progression every single time I went. Hard route, first visit, can't get off the ground. Next visit, manage to get the first move, then fall off. Next visit, get the first move, get a fingertip to the next, fall off. Next visit, get hold of the next move, then fall off. Next visit, get hold of the next move, don't fall off, then fall off in shock that I've not fallen off. And so on. That particular route took me six months to top out, but when I finally did, oh my god, better than sex.
A good negative example would be guitar. I've picked up an axe many times, but after 20 minutes when I realise I'm not the ghost of Hendrix, I dump it in disgust.
Running falls somewhere in the middle. I enjoy it, but not enough to make me do it three times a week (which in my climbing heyday was a bare minimum). I'm alright at it, which keeps me interested, and I've got a goal in that I want to beat my PB in order to prove that I'm not really as old as I think I am (which if I'm honest was part of the reason why I signed up to the Mcr 10k in the first place).
(* - not to be self-depreciating, it's just fact. There's some things I am really good at, but they tend not to be competitive disciplines)
(** - I'm thinking of 'hobby' sports like pool here. I suck at pool, I've always sucked at pool, and I'm pretty sure now that I always will suck at pool. My drinking buddy is on a pool team. Whenever we go out, we'll have a few games. Occasionally I'll win a game, usually I'll get pwned, but I'll still keep playing because [s]I'm stupid[/s] I really enjoy it)
Cougar you are me in a male body!! 😆
Guitar, once I picked it up, I had to finish exams, did 2 in one year!! Same with gymnastics, never tried climbing, but I sort of want to do trapezee, but I know once I do, it'll take over, GF isn't keen if I'm honest (can't say I blame her, she knows me.), so I'm not *looking* that hard for a course.
Not a coach but if you are aiming to improve you could add the following to your week.
6 x 800 at 5k race pace with a 2 min recovery. (or similar) running intervals regularly will significantly increase your fitness and ability to sustain a faster race pace
Once a week introduce a longer run maybe to around 10 - 12 miles roughly 1 min per mile slower than your 10k time. Dont start to fast or allow it to drop too much in pace.
I'm competitive and yet not. I gave up sprinting because I couldn't handle the pressure, but I'll bury myself to beat the guy in front of me in an XC race to get 15th place. However if there's no-one there I just slacken off and end up getting demoralised.
That's why I want to do track cycling. You are elbow to elbow with your foes, and even though I was only on a friendly fun day I saw red mist that I hadn't seen since fighting in the primary school playground.
surfer, iDave has given me a programme. thanks for help though. Your advice isn't much different from his, iDave's has shorter distances.
ssshhhh!
WTFU 😉
Emsz; you're tiny, aren't you?
I have this dream of training you up for next year's London Marathon, see if we can beat those tiny Kenyans!
Gonna have to up yer speed though. I want to see sub-35 min 10ks within a few months.
iDave's has shorter distances.
Lightweight 😉
Good luck
Elfin. 😯
Watched the Marathon this year (never paid much attention to it before) blimey they run fast!!
Don't worry love we'll get you trained up and proper fast. You're already the right body type, so now it's just a matter of working on yer speed and stamina.
You've got proper winning potential, you.
I'm not a horse!
Don't worry I won't have you shot if you get injured or something...
Raw eggs from now on love. And none of yer rubbishy junk food, s'not good for you.
You can still have some chocolate and cakes though. 🙂
