Would you notice a tangible reduction in required effort over, say, a two-mile run?

The fat person (in this hypothetical case) is capable of running said two miles without keeling over.

The run is on level ground.

The wind is Force 6 on the Beaufort Scale (25 to 30 mph) - that's the point at which umbrella usage becomes difficult, in case you didn't know...

The fat person is Heather off Eastenders.

Never watched Eastenders so don't know who she is.. but.. Yes you would notce the differance, it's called slipstreaming and cyclists do it a lot dontchaknow. I'd go less windage = less effort, but that'll mean others will pop on over with "Nah, you're a n*b mate".. but hey.

Hmmm... Heather is a really bad example. According to Heat Magazine on issue 62 vol 13, she is well known around the Eastenders set for her 'tailwind'.

I believe this would offset the benefits.

Are we assuming this thinner person would be fit enough to outlast the fat person?

Ahh, but Heather's gone on a zero flatulence diet, didn't you know? (Nuts, Vol 13, pp. 45-6) And I have it on good authority that she wears super supportive undies, which collects any ass-escapage in a little glass jar, ready for discrete discharge at a later date.

Yes.

Okay, so exactly how significant would the reduction in required effort be?

10%?

More?

When running outside a 6:oomin/mile pace requires a 5% increase in energy expenditure over running on a treadmill.
This equates to about a 1% incline on a treadmill. Once over 5:21 pace the treadmill gets put up to 2% to simulate the wind resistance.

Running at paces slower than 8mph (7:30/mile) the wind resistance is so small to be meaningless.

That's all based on normal/still conditions so by the time you factor in your Force 6 headwind then it would be quite a reduction in effort.
