I intend to learn to run in 2015 - starting from scratch pretty much
I have a borked knee from a couple of old injuries that healed incorrectly and as a result I haven't been able to run more than 25yards without considerable debilitating pain for decades..
The plan is to start from scratch with the guidance of a good sports therapist, and build up from nothing using very focussed chi-running technique and starting very small with the idea that I should be able to build up some muscle in the right areas, eventually enough to enable me to run regularly..
With this in mind I reckon I'll likely get through some shoes in the first six months, and with a tight budget and a predicted constant progression in my pronation I don't see the point in getting a proper fitting and splashing out on expensive shoes at this stage..
I'm looking for a good old fashioned cross-training type shoe on a budget..
Any ideas?
I'd look at a good cushioned shoes such as Asics Cumulus but they don't fit with budget so look at previous years versions which you can pick up cheaper.
Go to a specialist shop and get your running assessed. They will recommend the type of shoe you need to avoid buggering up your knees.
I'm sure your about to get a load of recomendations for whatever people are using themselves, I'll offer two thoughts: all trainers seem pretty good nowadays, £25 quid down sprts direct can buy you a decent pair and my personal recomendation as non runner runner is Nike Pegasus which are expensive for the current year but you can get the last years or early for 30/40 quid and they seem to offer a bit more support than most shoes.
Don't bother until after your first session with your specialist coach and see what they say
OK... what I'm saying is that I have nothing to run in.. nothing
The choices in my house are mtb flat shoes or Clarks desert boots.. the practice is pretty similar to barefoot running from what I've learnt so far..
I'd go to a specialist running shop. I used to do quite a lot of running and the correct shoes helped me tourism with fewer injuries and twinges.
Sports Direct whatever you like the look of within budget from Asics, Nike etc then stop posting on the web and get running.
I've got some Supernova Sequence 3's you can have if you want. They're well used but I can run them through the washing machine; might get you started?
Give me strength hippy boy. 😯
you reckon I'm on a hiding to nothing ****monkeylung? 😉
what's your professional opinion?
My professional opinion is keep it simple. Go for a short slow run, build distance or speed up slowly, then if you so desire then change your running style. Get a cheap pair of shoes, it matters not what type you buy.
to start, something you think you like the look of from sports direct.
then when you know what you hate about the first pair.... you will make up your own mind. too easy to overthink it.
yeah.. we're singing from the same hymn sheet I think.. 😀
was just hoping someone could give me a hot tip on a good deal...
wanmankylung - is it the term chi-running that incurred your wraith..?
Bearneccesities - thanks for the offer but.. hmmm, in the spirit of getting myself a chrimbo pressie I'm gonna treat myself to summink new.. no offence 🙂
wanmankylung - is it the term chi-running that incurred your wraith..?
No, it's the needless complexity. I have another name for chi-running, I call it "running". You'll not be running though, you'll be jogging.
pieddeformaggio LOL yeah... I'm gonna be vastly different on each foot
wanmankylung - yeah sorta, only being quite into yoga and that, I'm pretty certain that placing your awareness into certain areas of your bod whilst running, or any other exercise, instead of just stomping about will have a measurable effect on your physiology..
It's not like it's rare to hear a professional sports coach telling their athletes to focus on this that or the other is it?
My leg is pretty ****ed, I can't really mess about
Stop pontificating then and just [s]grow[/s] buy a pair 🙂

Just buy cheap shoes.

Do you have any evidence to back that up?
yup.. we've gone full circle and come right back to my original post sooo.... 😆
Do you have any evidence to back that up?
does your mum have any evidence to back that up?
I'm pretty certain and that's enough for me
I've done stomping about as you're suggesting and it's a big waste of time in my case..
there may be evidence out there, and I could ask someone who cares and get back to you if it would help (not being facetious btw)
Who suggested stomping? Stomping sounds like a stupid idea - possibly why you got injured.
I just restarted running and made sure I was properly assessed by the running shop before hand, as after 4 knee ops all is not too good down there.
Start real slow and take time to build up. You'll never run again like you did as a kid but can put a fair pace in ...eventually.
wanmankylung - I don't want to argue with you buddy, I have a real small penis so I've got massive self esteem issues, and I'm a bit thick.. you'll probs wipe the floor with me 😆
Yunki, I think your plan of action is great. Unfortunately I'm a sucker for advertising, so I can't think of any budget shoes to recommend.
You might try the Nike Flex range

Never tried em, but they probably fit with the chi-running viewpoint.

What's the difference between running and jogging ❓
Once the squabbling is done have a look at the Start Fitness website for previous year deals, if budget is tight.
I'm feeling some pent up sexual energy between wml and yunki here
Honestly?
If your leg is that ****ed, and you don't intend to get proper shoes, I'm going to say you'll have a short painful running/shuffling/jogging career. Hope it goes well for you, but take it easy.
BUT
Sports Direct: their shoes are just copies of most branded ones, you can get a decent enough pair for about £25. Take it steady, try not to stop, but don't worry about it if you do. Run the same distance at the same speed for a bit (until you can run it comfortably without stopping), only then try to run longer or faster.
