after months of running in a pair of boardshorts i've decided i'm now serious enough to buy some decent kit.
easy enough to get some regular non-too short shorts, but what about these compression shorts?
do you wear them under shorts, on their own, do they make a difference (in my case, 19quid for regular shorts or 40quid for compression)?
one thing i do seem to suffer from is getting cold/stiff on my upperthighs so poss some insulation from lycra would help?
The trend seems to be to wear them under normal shorts.
dont see the milage in the shorts my self
the long socks i see benifit in though.
Namely because i never get sore quads from running but my calfs go on fire - when i wear my skins i get further before i go onfire - leads me to think they are doing something
i suffer with hamstrings up the top, thats why i'm wondering about a little extra insulation/support.
If you think you need insulation just wear long running pants until the weather warms up. I wear Ron Hills.
Once its warm wear shorts.
If you are warm but want to keep your gluts warn, wear short tights.
Glute/hip issues here, so I wear a pair of 2XU compression shorts under a pair of Craft @modesty@ running shorts.
This combination seems to give me enough support to run longer distances without the problems I was getting, whilst at the same time not scaring old ladies and small dogs. I pretty much stick to this setup for all my longer runs and races, irrespective of the weather.
Training runs means tights, again with modesty shorts.
If you're getting cold quads, don't necessarily need compression shorts, just any tight fitting/lycra undershort will do for insulation.
That said, on the first ski trip of the season I took to wearing my compression tights during skiing, rather than after, midway through the week and noticed less fatigue at the end of the day, presumably from a bit of muscle support. On the long weekend trip, wore them every day and was noticeable less fatigued in the legs than I'd expected.
So maybe you will notice some benefit from wearing them anyway if you feel the need. Although, whether that's just placebo effect or not, the jury's still out on any definitive proven benefit...
