I’m looking to try and pick up a running buggy as a joint Christmas present for MsGinge and TinyGinge this year and was wondering if anyone hear could offer any pointers.
Current plan is to try and pick something up second hand rather than new to try and keep the price to under a couple of hundred if possible. It would likely be used over quite a range of surfaces covering tarmac from the door through to muddy sandy trails around the local forests and country parks. Currently TinyGinge is a bit too small to head out in one of these but I imagine she will be off as soon as she is big and strong enough to enjoy it without risk of injury.
From a quick look on the usual second hand websites it looks like it might be able to find something from out n’ about in budget but I have no idea if these are any good or if there are other brands/types I should be looking at.
We've just got a mountain buggy terrain for this reason, although the little one is still a bit young to go running in it. Can be picked up for buttons 2nd hand
We have a Thule urban glide..... it's excellent. Really light but yet manages to be very sturdy.
They do one with a fixed front wheel too, but the one on the urban glide has a lockout button - so there is really no need to get the permanently fixed one.
We have an out n about nipper which we picked up on gumtree. Its excellent, used around the woods on weekend dog walks and have done many parkruns with it on smooth tracks.
Boy is 4 and a half now and would still use it but he tends to run himself or go on my shoulders now..
Would certainly get another.

Thule chariot with the jogging third wheel attachment? Will also double as a very capable off-road bike trailer. Have had ours for 6 years & have traveled far and wide with it. Superb bit of kit. You can get an infant sling for the seats allowing the very, very small to come along too.
My youngest in the Thule infant sling at three months. Looks slightly less than impressed.

Where are you based? I have a Thule chariot cx1 to sell with all the bits in Cumbria.
For those that have a running buggy, from what age of your child did you start using them?
I think "they" say you can safely run with them from 6 months, but it will depend on the buggy. Need to have strong enough core and neck muscles. Think we started earlier than that on smooth paths, but the buggy at the time had good cushioning and support for the little one.

they depends on what country you live in .
US guidance for the chariot is from birth with the sling. - which seems a bit gungho to me
uk guidance is 6 months.
We started at 3 months once jnrs neck was pretty stable. She loves it Especailly as she is still in her lie flat pram otherwise So enjoys being able to look around forward dacing
We do only run on rural roads and farm tracks around our house though - jnr loves the farm tracks as they vibrate the pram and put her to sleep.
We use a chariot trailer - im looking out for an out and about nipper or a babyjoggger sr20 or similar the chariots a pain as its wide which means anti motorbike gates on cycle paths are a pain and also its low so it scrapes on the centre ridge of some of the farm tracks.
We've used B.O.B revolution and Thule/Chariot CX2. Both very good.
I have a very old-school SuperJogger, picked up from eBay for £25, although I have fitted a 5-point harness subsequently, as it only came with a 3. For off-road and minimal drag, you want the biggest wheels you can get, mine has 20"

Has a bit under a 1 minute penalty over a well surfaced 5k I have found
Cheers, Rich
@lesgrandepotato, thanks for the offer but I'm a bit too far away and I think "we" will want to stick with the buggy/stroller type thing rather than the trailer option.
There are a few decent looking suggestions in the other posts but ebay and gumtree seem to be fairly short on used options at the minute. Not sure if I'm just missing out on stuff being sold on closed facebook groups or if its just the wrong time of year to be looking for this sort of thing.
At this point its looking more likely that I'll be splashing out on a new out n about nipper sport if I want to make sure its here in time to get wrapped up.
OK, so I may have just ordered the nipper sport.
I'll try and remember to check in once it's been out for a run.
Time has come to dip my toes in the waters, from looking at this thread I've looked for:
Mountain Buggy Terrain
Out n About Nipper
Thule Urban Glide and Chariot
Cant find any close to me in the SW secondhand, are there any other models of running buggies to consider/look for?
Avoid anything with a castor/lock front wheel.
Our two both went out a lot in a babyjogger performance. Very similar to turboferret's chariot pictured above.
As a bit of kit it was reasonably well made. Decent build / wheels / brake. Light. The seat seemed pretty comfy for littluns (both lads just slept in it). The matching raincover fitted properly and actually kept out rain. The underside storage thingummy fitted properly and was waterproof.
They were pretty pricey at the time of purchase (only one or two serious running buggies to choose from 8 years ago) but seem to go for sensible money second hand.
We have a Mountain Buggy Terrain, I can't comment on it as a running buggy but we have done a few laps of the glentress walking routes with it set up as a buggy and a pram.
the front wheeel can be locked forward.
the carry cot and intermediate seat almost seem to be an afterthought but the buggy is good.
If anyone needs a Chariot/Thule infant sling (might fit other makes?) I've put one for free (donation to good cause) to collect (Bristol) in the classifieds.
Looks like I forgot to check back in on this one.
The Nipper Sport is now pretty much the only buggy we've been using for the last year or so. It's a little on the big side for use as a general pram if you want to do something like navigate a crowded clothing store or shopping center. But, thanks to the pandemic, that's not been much of an issue while we've had it so it has pretty much taken over from the other ones we used to have for everyday use.
As a running bug I'm told it is very good, easy to push along and very light so whilst it is extra effort over running without it is very much doable and doesn't slow MsGinge down too much when she is out (either on the road or round our local forest trails).
The only issue that has come up since we had it was a puncture which took it out of action for a couple of days as it's been so long since I'd fixed a puncture on one of our bikes that my rubber solution had dried up. shame it's not tubeless compatible; though I do hear people have successfully used slime tubes with them.,
We've v recently had first child and are looking for off-road style running buggy to supplement the Peg-Perego travel system we've already got (does a great job but not suitable for running or offroad really).
Shortlist:
Mountain Buggy Terrain
Out n About Nipper V4 Sport
Out n About Nipper V4 (single / 360)
Boogaboo Runner
Baby Jogger Summit x3 running buggy
Britax BOB Revolution Pro
Thule Urban Glide 2 Stroller
Bumbleride Speed
Thule Glide 2
Graco Relay Activity Stroller
Hauck Runner
Phil + Teds
It seems like only the Nipper V4 Sport and Boogaboo Runner have the much larger bike type wheels which look a lot better for off-road, but both have fixed front wheels (no unlockable swivel).
The places we want to run/walk are rocky tracks so my gut feeling is to get the Nipper V4 Sport but how much better is it for running on rocky tracks than the Nipper V4 single/360 for example? Are the larger wheels worth it for the sacrifice of having a fixed front wheel? (chances are, if we're in a supermarket situation, we'll be using the Peg-Perego anyway).
People seem to swear by the Mountain Buggy Terrain, Britax BOB and Hauck Runner too, but again they haven't got the huge wheels so guessing they're just running on flattish tracks…?
Thank in advance.
@geekpie the bigger wheels do make a world of difference for off road use. I'm not sure MsGinge (or TinyGinge) would want anything with wheels smaller than the Nipper Sport for going round the forest trails (mostly rough fire road but with some rooty single track sections in there too).
We were initially apprehensive about the fixed front wheel but you so quickly get used to putting pressure on the handle to lift this for turns (pivoting on the two rear wheels) that it really isn't an issue in everyday use and it makes everything so much more stable when running too. In fact I would go as far as saying that I don't think we would even think about anything with a mobile front wheel for running use.
The other thing you get with the nipper sport is a brake on the front wheel (normal/cheap bike leaver on the handle) which can be surprisingly helpful if you're going down a a hill and don't wanted to be dragged forward by the weight of the buggy/kid.
We’ve v recently had first child and are looking for off-road style running buggy to supplement the Peg-Perego travel system we’ve already got
We love our Thule Chariot. Kids is just coming up to a year old now and have put over 1k miles in it running (mostly off-road) and towing behind a bike. We've also done several hundred miles with it just walking as it is so much easier than a normal pram and gives a lot more options by but being constrained to tarmac. He probably averages about 5 naps a week in it, and seems to love it.
It is lightweight, very well built, versatile, comfortable for him, and has given me the freedom to get some proper exercise in most days whilst my partner is able to have a break from the baby. All three parties get something out of it. Genuinely the best thing that we have bought since having the baby.
We do have a fancy travel system pram thing too, but since he grew out of the basinet we have hardly touched it.
They are quite expensive, but hold their price well. Keep an eye on gumtree and eBay.
both have fixed front wheels (no unlockable swivel).
That's a good thing. Cross off anything on that list that does not have fixed front. Also cross off anything with small wheels - instant fail for anything off tarmac. A brake on the front wheel should also be high on the list.
Bugaboo runner seems to have a complex folding thingummy which would be on my list of stuff to avoid. Light and simple wins the day for off road. Look at how light/simple Turboferret's one is, the babyjogger performance.
The Nipper sport looks the best from your two, by a long way.
YMMV as ever.
We have the Out n About Nipper 360 and have used it for over 4 years now, both offroad and tarmac/paths. Think the other half picked it up for £100 second hand and we'll probably sell it for that too. Its been up the Dodd wood peak in the lake district, both kids have loved it. We put slime in all 3 wheels and rarely get punctures unless they are massive nails or sticks.
Definitely get one with a fixed wheel. We've got an Out n About, my son loves it - however we (by which I mean "I") didn't realise that the wheel needed to be locked for running.
Was fine for months, one day on a gentle offroad path I hit a small stone, the front wheel span around, stalling the push chair, and our momentum caused my son to hit his head on the frame of the sun shade / roof bit.
He's fine now (and was ok about 10 mins after it happened) but he had a lump for weeks, and I felt like the worst dad in the world. Wouldn't have happened if the wheel was locked (I didn't realise it would lock, we got the buggy second hand). Still feel so bad now, please don't make my mistake!
Thanks v much for all your advice everyone. The missus managed to track down a 2nd hand Nipper Sport V4 via Facebook with footmuff and UV cover for a right bargain. And when we got there the seller threw in a Baby Bjorn carrier she didn't want either!! Little un is less than a month old so won't be running for another 5 months or so but I've ordered the newborn insert and so will be taking him on some countryside walks v soon- can't wait! It's a thing of beauty. Cheers.
