Anyone run and ride in the same day? Not interested in duathlons etc, more to make the most of my last week off work.
I'm use to doing 2 runs and 2 rides a week, or 3 or 4 rides without running.
So, was thinking about a morning run. Then a rude after lunch. Isthat a silly idea? Or worth a try?
Try it and see how you feel.
I used to commute to work and do a run(5k)at lunchtimes .
Would be tired when I got home but it was fine over the summer months.
I used to cycle to work, run at lunchtime and then ride home in the evening. Might feel weird the first time as you’re using different muscle groups but you soon get used to it. If you’re running after riding, then taking shorter strides initially helps to ease out the muscles whilst they warm-up.
I did that this week. I’m far from fit but I’m trying to run most mornings. I went out running at 6am then ended up with a free evening so went a ride over the local hills too. I had the energy and wasn’t any more sore afterwards than if I’d only done the run.
Andy
I used to do it, with a break in the middle, TBH whatever the second activity; always felt like I wasn't doing it justice.
I find that if i do a decent run on the same day as trying to do my usual evening ride with a mate, i tend to feel my legs die sooner than if i haven't been for a run
Ride then run is easier than run then ride for me
Gentle run is a nice recovery after other exercise. I wouldn't go for a ride after a big run as the ride wouldn't be as much fun as doing it fresh
A guy I used to work with would cycle to work, (only about 3 miles), then run on a lunch time and cycle home. Or run to work, run on a lunchtime then run home. Did marathons & all that stuff. Often sometimes play footy after work. Fittest bloke in the jail, proper fitness nut.
Dropped down dead playing footy, aged 49.
Just saying.
I've got 5 mile commute each way and try to do at least one lunch time run in the week. I'm no long distance rider or runner, so regularity is more important to me than distance. A 5k at lunch time on top of the 5 mile commute can cause a bit of a struggle with tiredness in the afternoon. I'll usually eat half my lunch an hour before the run, and the rest after. Occasionally get up early to run before showering in the morning then commuting to work.
I'm not training for power/speed/distance in my cycling or running. I did a longer higher effort offroad MTB ride the other evening, 27 miles, longest in a while, and there was no way I'd run after that or even the following day!
I do it quite a lot during the winter: easy run at lunchtime, then an interval session on the turbo at night. The days I do intervals running I don't generally ride in the evening although occasionally I'll do an easy ride to loosen up.
You could do two tough sessions on the same day, but clearly you can't do them at the same intensity as you would normally. I'm pretty sure that's not ideal from a training PoV.
My main riding partner is an adventure racer, so she does this all the time and for ridiculous time periods when she’s racing.
It’s fairly normal for her to ride for two hours in the morning with me and then go beach running with the dog later on.
I've got a friend who regularly joins us for a 40-50 road bike ride half an hour after completing a Park Run, which she completes in not much more than 20 mins.
She is 61 although to be fair very fit - she represented Spain in her age group in the Montreal triathlon recently. She takes her training very seriously. She also has constant running related injuries unfortunately.
I always enjoy a rude after lunch...
Sorry I meant to say 40-50 miles in my previous post.
Yes do it quite often. When we had an office I did lunch runs and cycle commute. Now more likely to be afternoon runs (10k normally) after 2-3 hours riding earlier in the day. I normally go easier on the run pace if I've already ridden.
I've done 5k after 2x 10 mile commutes on the bike, but only if I'm feeling up to it and if the weather's nice. I'm a fair weather runner at the best of times, never stuck to a programme and probably have terrible 'form' so I'm a bit of a danger to myself whenever I go running.
The obvious benefit is that a (not too strenuous) bike ride might warm you up a bit better and help reduce injury risks from running.
Im always mixing stuff up. Sometimes I run a couple of miles before swimming a mile or do half hour yoga before a swim, run in the morning before riding to work. Run at lunchtime then yoga after work. One of my favourites is to ride the singlespeed from work for about 20mins (say6-7miles) to the local park, then run 1mile as fast as I can, then do a bit of PT/circuit training, then finish of with a bit of yoga. That's usually on Fridays before going for a few beers 🙂 -probably not in the recent heat though.
Yep, loads.
Sometimes a 5k over lunch after a commute in, sometimes just because I have the time and fancy getting outside.
Best/worst day as 65 miles on the bike followed by 10 miles of running. The former as I'd be invited out by some old friends, the latter as I was in the middle of a running and mileage streak as wasn't going to let a bike ride spoil it.
No problem when I'm conditioned for running, but at the mo I'm getting back into condition and a ride the day after a run can be quite leggy hurty.
I've done a few commutes home, then straight out for a run, for the first 500m my legs feel so odd, like they want to keep cycling. It's not obviously impacted overall poor performance though!
Yes, lots. Often run and run on the same day even run, ride and run.
