I don't know if this is common but I frequently get very sore cracks in my heels where the skin has dried out and split. Any suggestions on how to avoid this?

Foot cream. Make sure you get the one with a high urine content (true, it's a skin softner) something like scholl

Make sure once you've got the cracks sorted that you regularly exfoliate your feet, particularly around the areas where it cracks. A pumice stone is quite good for this, or if you feel the need to use technoligy, those Scholl Express Pedi are quite effective.
You could just use a grinding stone on the end of a drill. Make sure you turn the speed down and take off hammer action first though!

Lol @ bigyinn

Exfoliating sounds like a good idea. I think I'll stick with the pumice stone, though.

You still need cream to stop your foot from drying out. Use the pumice stone then the cream (it really works) don't use the stone to often, once or twice a week.

file, then use emollient, anything urea or glycrerol based. Flexitol, CSC, Hydromol . . .

Make sure you dont walk bare foot until they have resolved. wear footwear that has a heel cup, not mule type, or flip-flops.

Get your feet checked as it could be Eczema in which case you'll need something a bit stronger
