Just back from Mexico where I discovered Cuban Matusalem Platino white rum 😀
This is a decent rum straight with ice and around £8 a bottle in Mexico... can you get it in the UK.. nah bollox !! some online retailers selling for £25.
Currently drinking a Aldi Hopking dark rum which is pretty resonable as well.
What Rum you got 8)
Rather a sore point, im empty :-/
Mount Gay XO.

Im off to the Island, not til August 18 though. im getting desparate enough to pay uk prices though.
Black Barrel has been on offer in Waitrose recently. Worth a look.
My 30 mile cycle commute, over-demanding volunteering and lack of assistance with chores from my flatmate has been getting me down and tiring me out.
So I've taken tomorrow and Friday off and have made mescal margaritas.
Mescal, Aperol (Italian orange liqueur), lime juice, simple syrup and a salty rim
Not rum I know, but very tasty.
Just frying up some chilli con carne meatballs, baking cheese/jalapeno bread and boiling rice to eat with the new season of The Expanse which I rather enjoy.
Tomorrow I shall brew my own version of Dale's Pale Ale and then go buy a kitten to hug (serious)
Got some of that Diplomatico and it is very nice.....
Mount Gay XO./thread
Dimplomatico IS good but I am a recent convert to pink pigeon spiced and plantation as well.
Mount gay eclipse is standard go to easy drinking but Ron Zacapa is lovely and smooth but has recently been [s]uslurped[/s] usurped? by Skullduggery mainly cos the bottle is ace but it is nice!
I'm a recent convert to rum and quite taken with Gosling's Black Seal
Quite fancy getting into Rum, what are recommended mixers ?
Dark Matter
Kraken
Bundaberg
In that order.

iainc - MemberQuite fancy getting into Rum, what are recommended mixers ?
Get OUT! 😉
Avoid the traditional 'navy' rums and mixers shouldn't be needed but use what you like ginger, coke etc <shudders>
Currently have bottles of Mount Gay Eclipse and Black Barrel, Pirate's Grog, Appleton's, Kraken and Sailor Jerry sat on shelf. Need some more...
Appleton's
As served in Cathay lounges. Good stuff, that. Rich, deep, flavour.
I was lucky enough to enjoy a glass of Zacapa XO a few weeks ago and it was one of, if not the most, enjoyable drinking experiences I've had. Highly recommended.
+1 for the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Neat, no mixers, it's absolute bloody nectar.
Negrita
Flor de Cana and +1 Negrita
Kraken for the winnnnnn
The current lineup at home 😀
Dark Matter (Marmite, I'm not a fan)
Rumbullion (nicely spiced, good sipper)
Red Leg (bit on the sweet side, but decent)
Don Papa (amazing orangey smell, great sipper)
Smith & Cross (100 proof, actually not bad when mixed with coke)
Appleton Estate VX (first rum experience, bottle brought back from Jamaica 14yr ago!)
Wray & Nephew (overproof, slight banana-y taste, to be mixed)
Havana Club 3 anos (nice mixer, or neat actually!)
Mmmm rum.
Don't drink a huge amount of it, but might make the switch for the summer and pretend I'm Hunter S Thompson.
Any decent low priced rums I can dabble in? Partial to the Aldi Highland Earl over the winter, is their rum any good? Not going to spaff 20+ quid on a bottle anytime soon.
14yr ago!
Delete your account.
Red Leg is my fav at the min. Also have a bottle of Old Monk that a colleague brought over from India which isn't bad.

Have you drunk Appleton Estate rum? 😉
Yep. (Got it confused with Myers above earlier. As it's Myers in Cathay lounges)
It's not the best, but 14 years? 🙂
Let's say that I had a love/hate relationship with Jamaican rum for some years (free bar, student exuberance, early start, mountainous roads...).

I know what you mean about Dark Matter.. so cinnamon!
Still got all your Skelf pics BTW, just trying to find time to spend making a nice album of them - haven't forgotten

Tend to resort to the tried/tested Mount Gay (in various forms) but partial to Appletons, and had a lovely Cuban rum a while back. Currently working through a bottle of aged Havana Club. Lived in Grenada for six months 12 years ago and became fond of Clarke Court dark - be interested to see how it holds up these days.
Bought my brother a bottle of Dom Papa for crimbo, its good!!
but my (our) usual go to is Chairman's Reserve. he likes the black label one but im not keen, original for me!
certainly dont mind a drop of Mount Gay either...
Rumbullion and El Dorado 12yo
I'm a rum fanatic..
My fav currently is sailor jerry - delicious with coke!
For a sipper, I'm teasing captain Morgan black spiced at the mo.
However, on th back of this thread, I've just ordered a bottle of the diplomatic from amazon...will sup at the weekend!
We had some kraken recently - not horrible. Just I wasn't a fan.
DrP
OVD Demerara rum, cheap as chips on amazon and a real beaut

Yes, for a budget dark rum head to Aldi and buy the "Old Hopking", it's around £10. Drink straight with 4 small ice cubes, pretty good for the price.
Rum should be neat... not "lovely with coke" 😯 unless I got the wrong coke.
Rum should be neat...
Depends what the rum is. And you're ignoring famous rum-based cocktails like mojitos and dacquiris!

But this is a rum thread, not a cocktail one.
Ron Zacapa 23 for me, prefer it to the XO

Whatever you say, boss!
Racist!
I'm a big fan of Angostura, not sure where it sits on the rum league table, but it's nice. Once drank some rum with a random bongo player in Leeds city centre. It made my vision go funny. Now that's proper rum.

Er, I never got that memo...
I did get the one saying three ice cubes MAXIMUM, however..Shame on you.. 😉

....white rum
coconut + white rum = MALIBU
Goes with coke a treat
I was lucky enough to enjoy a glass of Zacapa [s]XO[/s] a few weeks ago and it was one of, if not the most, enjoyable drinking experiences I've had.
I was given a bottle following the birth of our daughter. It held up well, until she started to sleep through the night.
Rum + Coconut = hangover... as proven today.
1l bottle of Kraken £23 on amazon lightening deal..

Yes, guaranteed. My worst hangover ever.
Was out on diving on the Great Barrier Reef on a 25' Sharkcat and we just made it in time for closing at the pub on Magnetic Island, so we bought 3 bottles of Bundie, went down the beach where I shinned up a tree and got a dozen coconuts (2 each).
We filled them with Bundie, and drank them on the beach and watched the stars. Tasted great. Sang and shouted and fell around until the small hours, but eventually we had to leave to get back to work on the mainland.
However we managed to totally miss Townsville Harbour in a rainstorm on the way back and surfed the boat up on the beach at the esplanade, slept off the rest of night there until the tide came back in and floated us off.
I can still feel the blinding pain of the morning sun that day.
On the other hand, oh to be young and stupid again. 🙂
^^ reminds me of when I was on a beach in Thailand, drinking 'too much' sangsom run cocktails.
I was rather tipsy, stumbled back to teh room, and proceeded to drink gallons of water from the tap.
I'm not sure if it was the rum, or the rat-carcuss infested water from teh water tower, but I was mucho-puko the next day!

I have a theory that rum and coconut juice makes reverse Picolax... 🙂
Have got in stock
Kraken
Dead Mans Fingers
Admiral J original
and my current favorite Spytail ginger spiced rum
Was presented with a bottle of Bumbu rum in return for standing up in a church and lying in order to become my nephew's godfather. Just cracked it open tonight to give it a sample, and it's not too shabby.
good timing... 😀
Waitrose has on offer "havana club dark rum 7yr old" - £19... dam good, wednesday night session!
Changed my mind on the Aldi one now.. 😉
Kraken... umm.. keep seeing this... but really is it any good ? or is is JD, southern Comfort style ? Just looks a bit rank.
It's alright, but it's different... I don't reach for it often, but I sometimes get the urge.
Ron zacapa 23 is always in stock at home. Pricey though, so little and often. Havana especial is great for the price, a step above mount gay eclipse.
If your rum needs a mixer, you should be drinking better rum.
If your rum needs a mixer, you should be drinking better rum.
Rubbish. Some rums are made for mixing e.g. any white rum!
Tried Kraken, it's a bit sickly I thought, so didn't bother with a bottle.
Picked up a bottle of Diplomatico, though. It's nice. Smells like brandy, tastes like whisky.
I've been off the rum for about a year - since I was racing
Only liked the dark stuff and really didn't care for the slightly lighter Caribbean stuff. However a mate bought me some Goslings bought over from his brother in Bermuda - & that's lovely and smooth.
You can buy it over here at a premium.

Where do we stand on spiced? Had a bottle of Pusser's spiced at chrimbo and it was nice, if not a little too sweet/cinnamony.
+1 for Ron Zacappa 23 year old Guatemalan Rum
Stunning.
After a 2 week holiday in St Lucia I decided El Dorado 12yr was my favourite.
It did take quite a bit of sampling to decide though....
Bacardi 8 at the moment. Only option at the T5 fLounge*. It's OK, but a little shallow in flavour.
*daily humblebrag. 😉
The one and only Zacapa for me!
I thought I should post up in here, you might all be interested!
I'm setting up my own rum distillery 🙂
