Why have you got question marks against Wales and Australia? Do you seriously think Wales will lose to Uruguay? 🤣

The commentary saying you have to tackle lower, but unless you’re crawling along the floor I don’t see how you can – he was very low.

They need to tackle more passively and not go for the big hit all the time.

I’ve been puzzling about this, and the commentators suggestion that players shouldn't accelerate into tackles but it’s simply rubbish. You cannot legislate for the force being put into a tackle. Especially in a sport that can’t agree on what’s a forward pass or not! And, if you could somehow make a ruling that a tackle is not passive enough, would it be fair that Billy V gets tackled more aggressively than Finn Russell, for instance?

Also, if you watch the tackle we’re talking about, the Samoan is in the defensive line, not moving very quickly and certainly not accelerating out of control into the tackle. He just made a perfectly normal tackle and was carded for it. You could perhaps criticise him for upward motion at the point of contact, but that’s possibly because he was expecting Stockdale to be standing when he tackled him and not on his knees.

I’ll be amazed if the Japan Scotland game goes ahead. Check out the video of the Japanese players the trying to get from the changing to the pitch for training...

It was knee deep water inside!

Well done to Ireland today. Sexton has a good game.

Samoa’s discipline was bloody woeful.

Very easy to say from a sofa. Quite a different thing when a rhino in shorts is trying to carry a ball through your spleen. I’d guess.

So in ascending order of importance

I hope Scotland win and go through if the game goes ahead.

I think we  (Scotland) have let ourselves down with the threat of legal action. If they had a concern they should have said so before signing the contract.

However World Rugby have really let everyone down by focusing entirely on developing a new market this tournament has become all about the bottom line and not the rugby.. World Rugby gambled that the tournament would not be hit by a typhoon. In typhoon season. The so called contingency plan amounted to " the game is cancelled... tough shit Italy".

I have no confidence that the top 6 teams would have been treated with the same disdain and therefore future tournaments run by World Rugby are much less attractive.

The really important thing is for people in the affected area to get through this typhoon safely.

Japan - Scotland game to go ahead on schedule.
https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/update/510973

Scotland don't look good with all the threats of legal action etc before even knowing whether the game would be cancelled or not. Let's face it, if they hadn't played so badly against Ireland, it wouldn't have been a problem anyway.

In fact given the unpleasant attitude of some of the SRU I now would be quite happy for japan to go thru

What might be poetic justice is if Scotland win but Japan get a losing bonus point so go thru. After all IIRC Japan went out last time on points difference or bonus points having won the same number of games as Scotland and were the only team to win 3 games but go out???

very pleased the game is going ahead and all questions and what-if's can be answered.

Compared to the damage and loss of life, it's not that important, yet at the same time sport is very important for giving people something to rally behind. On that basis, and not from any anti-Scots sentiment (although I agree the execs at SRU should consider their positions after this) - I shall be firmly standing behind Japan later on.

いい加減にして

Japan has hosted plenty of major sporting events on or around typhoon season. Formula 1, world athletics championships, next years olympics and the football world cup (although that was in June, just outside peak typhoon season.

If World Rugby have got it wrong then so does the FIA, IAAF, IOC and FIFA.

FIFA wouldn't try to pull this crap. Can you imagine what would happen if a football World Cup match was declared a draw without being played. It would not happen.

Japan have done a good job with this WC. It's World Rugby who are an absolute joke.

I agree that the SRU did not give a good representation of themselves, but a lot of hard work has gone into getting the team into a position to get to the World Cup. I think now they should be quickly forgiven. I’m hoping for a great game and I’ll be happy for either team to go through. It would be sad to lose the Scotland fans from this thread.

Typhoons have been a regular problem, Jules Bianchi's death the most obvious.

That wasn't the situation aki was in, he could have easily wrapped up the Samoan and taken him down.

An overreaction I guess. It just seems unnecessary, as if we have to dumb down to get the Americans interested.

It’s not just the SRU who have come out big this badly, lots of the fans have too. Lots of moaning on Facebook about what a farce the cancelled games are, how badly organised it has been etc.

This is the worst typhoon for 60 years. At then end of typhoon season. How do you predict that?

Say the game was delayed a day or two and Scotland got absolutely hosed in their next game the same ‘fans’ would have pissed and moaned about short turn around times.

Not sure what is to be down when a typhoon that is 1400km wide hits. The size and severity of that is something that we in this country just can’t comprehend. When air ports and train stations are closed how do you move teams around?

It’s going ahead now. Hopefully Japan will do what they need to to get through.

I have a mate who is there. Big rufty tufty ex player turned builder. He was on the 37th floor of a tokyo hotel at this time yesterday, he said it was genuinely frightening and the building was swaying, he was under no doubt that the right decisions have been made, and that's from someone who's spent a fortune to go and watch and had 2 tickets for the england game yesterday.

Predictions for today’s games?

Japan - Scotland will be close game. Japan will get losing bonus if they don't win. Japanese defense will deny Scotland four-try bonus. Japan will progress, Scotland will go home.

Came out of the hands backwards, that was alright last year, its almost impossible to pass backwards when running forwards, the refs are assessing them different from how they used to. My first thought was forwards, then on the replay it looked ok. Amos may have been infront.

I would dearly love to see how you would be reacting if it was England in the same position. I'm not even sure if you're English or not. I'm just assuming you are due to your complete tone-deafness and lack of awareness of irony.

FIFA may be massively corrupt but even they know when you start cancelling WC games and declaring them draws you are admitting your sport is a joke.

And I’m sure if it was England you’d be full of sympathy. We’ll ever know how the RFU would react because they’re not in the situation. I would hope that they’d take their medicine having signed up to the same agreements as everyone else. Whataboutery at its finest.

Scotland knew the rules / risks beforehand and signed up to them. When it didn’t look like it was going to suit them the toys were ejected out of the pram.

England wouldn't find themselves in this situation. Neither would the ABs. So no, whenever England have difficulties I have no sympathy. World Rugby give you all the sympathy you need.

Sometimes I start to wonder if I'm too harsh on the English. Then I have a little exchange like this and I remember why there is no better feeling than seeing England being made to look like idiots.

Gents, we all need to dial it back a bit. There has some been some great rugby and there will be some more, lets try and stay friends.
As an English I feel it would have been harsh on both teams not to play, I feel bad for Italy too. However I think people need to look through the tinted specs and remember that people have died in this storm already. One death is not worth a rugby match. Imagine if it had gone tits up. They have been navigating a difficult path. Also just because you disagree with Townsend and possibly the SRU, lets not take it out on the team or the fans.

Nobody would decline signing and miss out on the World Cup. In threatening to sue, surely Scotland were attempting to make the WRU stick to the contract they’d signed. Anyway, the game is on - let the better team win.

I can only applaud Japan for this. Speed speed speed - of feet, of hand, of thought.

I don't really mind being beaten by a team playing rugby of this quality. Its not that scotland are being poor. Its that Japan are excelling and would grace the qfs.

No way back from here

I think they've been training to play tier 1 team moves, when you watch tier 1 they play very strict structures, which is what Scotland are doing wrong today.

Why do people keep underestimating Japan? Since the last WC, it's been obvious that they are a good team who deserve to be taken seriously. After the Ireland game, surely nobody still believed they'd be easy-beats.

I think a lot of Scotland’s fans have somewhat rose tinted specs. However, they’ve done it before. They just need to pretend they’re playing England ; )
