Japan, the team Scotland think they are?
What a game so far, and I can’t see it letting up anytime soon.
Some outstanding Japan performances, their number9 is great.

Jesus. Squeaky bum time in the Irish camp now.

Puts England struggling against them in the autumn into context a wee bit. They’re not a bad team at all.

Well done Japan, they played fantastically. Good news for Scotland I guess.
I wonder how they’ll react in the studio 😂

That’s almost as funny as Wales dumping England out in 2015.

They’ll be well up for the Scotland match now!

Surely there’ll get out of the group this time around?

Ireland’s issues reappeared; passive tackling and poor line out. They missed Sexton today; he’d have made sure that ball stayed in play.

Ah, to answer my own question, it was suggested that Ireland wanted to ensure they got the bonus point.
Too slow, Wrightyson beat me to it.

Ireland will still qualify top of the group I predict and that result was totally deserved for Japan, and is brilliant for them and the competition.

Only saw the game in patches but they'd give any of the other NH teams a good game, no shame in losing to them in their own back yard. Lets be honest you'd be loving it if was England.

So Japan will probably make it through right? They could beat Scotland and Samoa. This is probably one of the best things to happen in Rugby ever. I feel for the Irish but I think the world no1 pressure was too much..

Good news for Scotland I guess.

You think?
As I see it Scotland got battered by Ireland and Japan have beaten Ireland.
Scotland may have an uphill struggle against Japan.
Well done to the latter BTW.... Good for rugby on the world stage.

Japan showed what happens when you play simple rugby well. Quick ball, short passes, keep possession and excellent discipline. No daft hail Mary skipped passes or constant kick and chase.

Aim small, miss small.

They were absolutely brilliant in the 2nd half and thoroughly deserved the victory.

If they play like that against Scotland they will beat them and top the group

Fantastic to watch, al been said above, that's how to play simple and very well. Discipline was key, just didn't give Ireland a look in.

No, silly me. I was thinking it increased Scotland’s chance of topping the group, but with the bonus point Ireland picked up in this game it’s looking ominous for Scotland now.

"you must be new here"

I was more referring too the media and pundits constant drivel about any tackle that looks remotely tasty in slow motion. I know better than to expect it to be civilised here.

Chuffed for Japan. Potential for Ireland to not even leave the group....

Scotland could finish 3rd even if they beat Japan. It might all come down to bonus points and points difference

You’d think that if your full time job was to be a commentator that you’d make an attempt to learn how to pronounce players’ names properly. 🙄

It’s not pronounced Yankees. It’s not pronounced Hellant. It’s not pronounced Lob-oo-shagnee.

It would be less of an upset than Japan beating Ireland or South Africa.

Edit. Well, Japan or Scotland, anyway. Samoa beating Ireland would be a huge upset.

Yeah but this is ITV remember so all these other countries are an amusing amateur sideshow to the main event which is obviously England.

Look on the bright side, it's probably saved Japan the embarrassment of being the first host country to not make the final eight.

Isn’t that a tad pessimistic? It would seem reasonable, although anything could happen before then, for Japan to be on 13/14 points and Scotland 10 points when they meet.

I think it'll come down to bonus points and we got nothing from Ireland. Even beating Japan won't be enough, we'll need to stop them getting a point against us. I don't fancy it.

I too wondered why he kicked it out, was it to secure the losing bonus point of being within 7?

Although if that was the reason then why didn't he kick it out at the nearest touchline, rather than trying to get distance up the field?
No..... It was brain fade.

Wonder if there is another home nation with experience of that? I actually DON'T want Japan to do well because they aren't exactly Japanese, are they? We all have a couple of players that are imports, but they started the Russia game with 8 islanders/saffers. I would far rather see a pacific Island country do well despite the thieving that tier one nations have done to them.

Indeed. Great execution from Ireland. They secured the ball. Noted the clock had expired and they were only 7 points down so clinically kicked the ball into touch to secure the losing bonus point. Against Japan. Now they can go into a quarter final against SA or NZ confident that they can pull off similar plays under pressure.

It speaks volumes for Joe Schmidt's coaching that he's elevated Ireland to such a level of performance. That moment alone convinces me that Ireland are genuine RWC contenders again.

If they are recruiting by the rules then it’s hard for any home nation to criticise them when our teams have plenty of SH born players in them, many brought in quite controversially. How many is too many? How cynical is too cynical? Anyways, some of their best players are actually Japanese.

Really? Come on?

They're Japan. They're tiny little people. They need a bit of help. Besides they all PLAY like Japan whatever country they're from. Leitch went to high school in Japan and stayed. As did many others.

I would far rather see a pacific Island country do well

Like England?

Yeah since they took the smiley button away I don't use emoticons. I was being slightly tongue in cheek.

Thing is, should Ireland have been seeking a losing bonus boint or should they have been looking to run it from their own line and hopefully snatch a draw? The NZ Herald described the last play as "baffling".

We could use the same excuse! But bearing in mind the head start they got in the professional game ie the 80's; you would think that they would have a better plan other than hoovering up islanders and provincial Saffers.

But it’s all done within the rules. Can’t really complain when it’s so common place with other nations.

Ireland dumped a lock who has numerous caps, played in successful campaigns for a Saffa who had literally just become available. Surely that’s worse? I’m guessing that the Japanese struggle with certain positions due to their natural, physical size.

Got a stat for that NMbuzz? I find that hard to believe.
Edit; 8, of which only 3 had to qualify, rest were Grannies. As for the decent player jibe, bit rich coming from a supporter of the country that capped Shontye Hape and that big pudding in the second row!( winking emoj) I await AA mentioning Brandon Laney;when he does I will point out he was the record points scorer in the 6n...

Come on its Brendon The Chainsaw Laney, go the man his full title at least!

Watched the Japan Ireland game now, what a joy it was to watch flowing passes down the backline and the foot work of their forwards before contact was great. If I was TJ or Duckman I'd be pretty bloody nervous right now!!

Autocorrect. True story; his first day of training everybody thought he was the new hooker, and was out of shape FOR a hooker. 6N record points scorer though. As for the WC we are hosed, even if we beat the Japanese, and I think we will; I can't see us bearing Japan or Ireland's aggregate scores/ bonus points.

I was surprised it was 14 too although it's now 13 with the replacements. Hamish Watson and Ali Price having gone home and being replaced by Magnus Bradbury (Glasgow) and Dorchester's own Henry Pyrgos.

John Barclay - Hong Kong
Simon Berghan - NZ
Allan Dell - SA
WP Nel - SA
Blade Thomson - NZ
Ben Toolis - Australia
Hamish Watson - Manchester
Ryan Wilson - Aldershot
Chris Harris - Carlisle
Sam Johnson - Australia
Sean Maitland - NZ
Ali Price - King's Lynn
Tommy Seymour - USA
Duncan Taylor - Northampton

Yeah the decent player jibe was based on comparative performances against Ireland in the 2019 RWC. 😉

We've had some poor ones - Shontayne Hape (shiver!), Henry Paul, Lesley Vainikolo, Mouritz Botha, Hendrie Fourie, Ricky Flutey, Ben Te'eo

12 of Japan's 16 foreign born players are Japanese citizens I think, and the majority of them also went to school/university in Japan. I think it's a little unfair to criticise them in that regard, especially given our own use of the residency rules.

If you want to enforce national purity, surely the place to start is with the coaches.

Ireland: Head coach - Joe Schmidt - NZ
Wales: Head coach - Warren Gatland - NZ
England: Head coach - Eddie Jones - Australia
Japan: Head coach - Jamie Joseph - NZ
Canada: Head coach - Kingsley Jones - Wales
Italy: Head coach - Conor O'Shea - Ireland
U.S.A.: Head coach - Gary Gold - South Africa

NMbuzz, only Johnstone,Nel and Harris are time qualified. The rest have at least a blood link. On the citizenship point; it is amazing and restores ones faith in humankind how a batch of Island rugby players managed to get citizenship of one of the hardest countries in the world to emigrate to. Maybe I am just a cynic though, I am sure they had all studied medicine and various obscure and in-demand engineering disciplines. They are probably compensating for not being able to play ex all blacks like Joseph like they used to.

These discussions are lame, the rules are there about nationality. Countries work to the rules. End of story. Lets talk about the Rugby.
England fans - Assuming England make it to the 1/4 finals (which is a big assume, we still have to face the Argies and Froggies) then we either get Wales or Oz.
So who shall I support today?

Lets talk about the Rugby.

When your team is winning, talk about the sport. When your team is losing, talk about the rules. Most fundamental principle in any sport.

Victim blaming! 😁

Maybe the ref should point out that they should learn how to attack properly if they can’t do it without foul play. But he was right, it was awful tackle technique.

I’m not going to say much for fear of jinxing things, but for me Wales are worthy of their lead. Australia will surely get their purple patch, I hope it is short and the 15pts is enough. A 1pt win is all I desire.

Fed up of the constant checking for someone tickling a head. Nothing wrong with Adams tackle at all that was rediculous and I have to agree with Hooper how the **** are you supposed to carry the ball?

Having said that I agree with Gauss all I want is a Wales win and hopefully we don't let Australia tight back into the game.
