I really don't see that it should matter whether it's a first round match or a final - if the referee sees a red card offence he should act upon it as he sees fit regardless of whether it might 'spoil' a big match.

But apply the process I have shared TJ, which comes from an elite ref,and it wasn't a red...which it wasn't anyway :D..."Flirting with red" is an issue when there is no video or citing panel. Ref could yellow, panel upgrade, that is the supposed back up we have. Rolland will be getting hammered,I have run touch on one Magners game, I got a DVD of how I had done,Imagine how they are going to go through him?

It didnt cost us the match the failure to kick pens and the conversion cost us the match but it had a huge impact on the game and will also be on the record of Warburton.

As much as I'd hate to see the Aussies win it, the prospect of Wales vs NZ in the 3rd place playoff is enticing. A saffer mate of mine has had France as his outside pick since the end of the 6N. SURELY not???

the pen near the end that led to 1/2p's kick was even worse, admittedly I was pacing the living room like a demented idiot at the time but when the ref blew the whistle I was fully expecting a yellow card for Girafferis. He placed the ball 3 times and there was no ruck formed and so the frenchman couldnt have come in from the side surely.

I thought he was making amends as it was so blatantly a penalty to France.

I wonder if Gav would of made that kick 😉

It is hard to imagine a more heart-breaking defeat. Down to 14 men for the last hour, and having lost our cornerstone on the tighthead after only 10 minutes, Wales had no right to be in this match at all; and yet we were. Thanks to a remarkable display from the Welsh, and a remarkably negative approach from the French, we spent the last 20 minutes of the game a single point behind – and that, of course, is where the real heart-break was. We had no right to be so close – but having got there against all the odds, we had opportunity after opportunity to steal the victory, and simply could not do it. Attacking lineout after attacking lineout was thrown away, kicks at goal hit the woodwork or fell inches short, drop goal attempts went badly wrong or simply didn’t happen, and the final whistle brought an unlikely dream to a bitter en

To be fair, it was a hell of a long way! I'm always surprised at how far top flight kickers can actually launch the ball.

But if we had kicked some points, would the French have upped their game and scored a try?

Watch the leadup for Halfpenny's penalty attempt - i'm sure Phillips stood off inviting the French to give away the penalty which they did - high stakes.

The French were rubbish. They couldn't have upped anything.

With 15 men Wales would have won by a bundle. With 14 they'd have still nicked it if some of the kicks had gone over.

simple fact is Wales would have hammered them with 15 and should still have won by a good margin with 14 had a few kicks gone over, opportunity missed again. We need to beat whoever we play in the 3rd place match to have made real progress. Beating Samoa, and Ireland is not progress.

I, however, feel that missing out to South Africa by 1 point, matching them near as dammit point for point in the group games, losing out by 1 point to the French with a two man advantage, playing some of the best rugby in the tournament and finishing fourth in the world rankings is. 😀

Question for Duckman (or any other refs on here):

What does "start with a red and work backwards from there..." mean?

Is it - the ultimate sanction for this offence is a red but you can consider lesser sanctions if you see fit?

intresting would rolland have sent him off for the first one?

Rolland sent fritz off here, loose worse than Warbs hit but not a lot, picks him up higher and looks more intentional and drove him down.

Hey a_a, if I were you I'd stop scouring the web for tackles worse than today's which were punished less or you'll never stop.

Get off here and get out there and sink a few pints is my advice. 😉

Was working today and following on live text on BBC. Suprised by how close it was given how much advantage is meant to be given by a yellow card (about 5-7 points if I remember correctly)

Watched the game on ITVplayer (painful. The tackle seen at full speed with all the French players upset immeadiately after could have been seen as a spear tackle. Would have been sensible to call over his touchjudges to discuss. Was he influenced by being able to understand what the French were claiming happened?

However what upset me most was the sheer lack of ambition by the French. With a 1 man advantage for 60mins to be hanging on with a 1 point lead at the end shows how poor they were. They appeared to have no desire to attack the Welsh and expose the numerical advantage. It was like watching England. Actually even England would have tried to open up a score. Just awful.

Don't mind who wins tomorrow as long as they humiliate this weak gutless team.

Yes, the Welsh were very good and obviously spurred on by the feeling of injustice. They missed Priestland as Hook was poor and Jones too negative.

However at this level the semi final of the World Cup for a team to be down to 14 men and the opposition to be as gutles as this French team were was disgusting.

It's an affront to the glorious history of running french rugby.

I hope they get thumped.

Would agree the Welsh were fantastic. The missed Priestland as Hook was poor and Jones too negative.

However the French performance was an affront to the glorious history of running French rugby and flair.

I hope they get thumped in the final.

So what happens if breadman was only given a yellow, which was then upgraded to a red and a ban in the citing commission; and if Wales had won? Would France have lost to a team that should only have had 14 players on the field? Piennar tried to bring a sliver of balance back to the pundittery at the end of the match with this statement, which if you look at it5 objectively, is reasonable enough.

As ever with Wales (and certainly England - especially at football), it's always someone else's fault.

•"Rolland u've had a shocker.... Not the first time either!!! We're not here to watch u.... (England wing Mark Cueto)
•"Should have been a yellow but never a red, poor Sam he's been the heart and soul of Wales! (England full-back Ben Foden)
•" Yellow card, no one says another word. Sam Warbuton wrongly sent off. " (Scotland scrum-half Rory Lawson)
•"Really gutted for Wales - never a red card" (Ex-Scotland lock Doddie Weir)
•"Gutted for the Welsh lads been team of the tournament!" (England centre Mike Tindall)

Shit sympathy from HRH and Ben Foden, your right it is time to move on.

OK last word on this from me (I hope)

So what happens if breadman was only given a yellow, which was then upgraded to a red and a ban in the citing commission; and if Wales had won? Would France have lost to a team that should only have had 14 players on the field

The injustice is the lack of consistency by refs, similar tackles have gone unpunished or been yellowed with later bans, from the IRB directive the ref was most likely right although the wording of that is maddeningly inconsistant (what constitutes "a height"). Its certainly the softest straight red I've seen.

And finally what worries me is the Warburton tackle was a decent low down tackle, its these where you risk having the players momentum carry him up. It'll mean players will have to aim higher around the chest and go for the big smash, is this why we see so many high tackles go unpunished or even lauded as great hits, with a smaller area to aim for more will slip high. Apart from the odd real screamer like Rush on Lawes, when was the last time someone got a straight red for a high tackle?

as said earlier this pretty much sums up my view
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2011/oct/15/france-wales-rugby-world-cup?newsfeed=true

I don't blame Alain Rolland for Wales's World Cup exit against FranceThe tip tackle has been prioritised by Rugby World Cup authorities but other referees have failed to act

just snaffled this from another site, assuming NZ beat Aus

If we beat Australia (by less than 15 points) then we will rise back to 4th place - ahead of Australia but behind South Africa and France. 😀

If we beat Australia (by more than 15 points) then we will climb to 2nd place.
😆
If we lose to Australia then we will fall to 8th place - behind Ireland.
😕

so if wales loose the third place game, we will finish 4th at the world cup, having beaten Ireland but still go home with a lower world ranking then when we started and below a team we beat!

Les Bleus head coach Marc Lievremont also reiterated he thought referee Alain Rolland had made the correct decision. "[People] can talk about injustice but I have seen the footage again and the red card is justified," he added. "The referee was consistent. I can't help it if their kicker was not as good as ours. I don't know if the best team won but France are in the final."
