Do people really think Ashton, good player that he is, is better than: Guilford or Jane, Ioane or O'Connor, Tommy Bowe, Ngwenya, Bobo, Habana? Shane Williams for all his big flaws in his game is as good a finisher.

Better than..
Guilford or Jane? No
Ioane or O'Connor No (for absolute definite)
Bowe? No
Ngwenya? Yes - he's just fast.
Bobo? Yes
Habana? Not at his peak
Williams? Not at his peak

I always think that Williams is a bit like Campase. Brilliant but brittle. Can win you a game, but can also lose you a game. At his best (a few years ago now) stunning - now good.

Ashton is not on the same class - but he does score tries - consistently.

Personally I think the one of the best at the moment is George North, when he gets some experience he will be amazing.

Anyway my forecasts to win this weekend

Ireland - too much experience
England - France are in self destruct mode
NZ - too strong
SA - My Favourites

Next Lions team is looking good already....!

Might even be a Scotchish person in it....

Ngwenya? Yes - he's just fast.

No he's not. He's got more than just (incredible) speed. He wouldn't be Biarritz's top try scorer otherwise.

Check out his 2nd try in this hat trick against Gloucester.

TBH I think Ashton is a lot like Williams, to use a wendyball analogy they are both professional goal hangers. You hardly notice Williams in a game except for about 1.5 seconds at the end of some good work by the rest.. (Thats not a criticism, as someone said of Ashton before, their skill is placing themselves in clear space to receive the ball and score. Vital players..)

I used to play wing at school - my job was to run up and down with everyone else until I got the ball - maybe two or three times a game - and then run like buggery towards the corner flag until I scored or got mashed.

Flanker. I did the mashing. 😈

I think Wales are playing some great stuff, but are maybe getting ahead of themselves. They should probably have beaten SA, but lost, not had a real test since then

Warburton / North / Roberts (class)/ Priestland etc look pretty special, and I hope they do well. But will it be another false dawn? Personally, I think Irl might just beat them up like they did Eng in 6N

Think it is too early to write off all of England's players, think when it comes to the crunch (pun intended) a few may prove they are better than they've looked.

but this could all be wrong

anyway, I'm 1/2 french and 1/4 English, looking forward to the Irl / Wales game more, but suspect Eng and France have more up their sleves than they've shown

flanker here too, then hooker when I forgot to carry on growing, as the trend continued I was forced to retire.

I think ashton is a very different player to Williams. Ashtons skill is in being in the right place to receive the scoring pass, williams in beating a man one on one. ( not their sole attribute of course. You need one of each in a team 🙂

Am sure you've been a hooker at least once, Darcy...!

Easy jokes, donchajustlove'em? 😉

Duckman, 6 or 7? I was the former. Moved there from the front row, having played rather a lot at 3. Incidentally, I firmly believe that in this day and age, tighthead props have taken on yet more significance and can have even more impact in winning a game!

I may have a sore head in the morning. Just opened a Fuller's Golden Pride.

No Brains on sale. 🙁

With my stature, I could only ever be a scrum-half. Correct spikey little tw4t temperament too. However, usually, I act like a bit of a LOCK 🙂

I'm off to the pub this evening - the Alma Tavern, serving fine ales for pre-holiday drinks with our friends. TBH, I think I'll struggle to sleep with the combined excitement of holidays AND the game.

Hmmm...just checked the Guest Ale list:

Doom Bar £2.80
Spitfire £2.70
Bishops Tipple £2.80
Courage Best £2.50
Deuchars IPA £2.70
Elf & Hoppiness £2.70

Elf & Hoppiness sounds interesting 🙂

What time do you fly O'Flashearty?

Great banter on this thread (most of the time).

Flash, both and 8, I fell between two stools, 6"3" and 16-17 stone.Big enough for 6/8 in Scotland, too tall for 7,small for 6 at London Scottish.TBH,Adam Buchanan-Smith/Derek White both had caps at Scottish while I was there, making 1xv back row slots hard to get. As for props importance, one of the reasons Bath got shot of Stevens was because he was the best paid players on the books.

I played as a flanker in 6th form college, I didn't really understand the position very well at the time but I did quite well at it being fast, fit and committed. Got bored though, hardly ever saw the ball.

Should've been a winger aye.

I was shit.

Small, so was put in at scrum-half. Seemed to spend my few games there staring up the nostrils of the oppo open-side as he grinned down at me!
Was moved to full-back and found out i was even more crap...

being diagnosed with CharcoMarieTooth sysndrome and the complete physical inability to run seemed to be a bit of a drawback for field games... 🙄

Anyway...

When I was a young man I served my Lord Talbot
With bow, sword and buckler I full earned my pay
Till we came 'gainst the French on the field of Castillon
And all we had won it was lost on that day

With the strength of our arms and the good grey goose feather
We'd harried the French for fivescore years and more
Till a young witch in armour brought strength to their armies
And we found ourselves fighting a long losing war

So Talbot he took us upon a chevauchee
We marched from Bordeaux in the dead of the night
Took the French by surprise for they did not expect us
And caught their advance guard and put it to flight

Though six times our number we advanced on their earthworks
Though three hundred cannon poured shot through our ranks
No word for retreat came from my brave Lord Talbot
And we died where we stood on their ditches and banks

With bow and with bill we fought long and fought bloody
We died where we stood would not give back a pace
T'was the cannon destroyed my Lord's chance of a victory
Then a French man at arms smashed an axe in his face

With the death of Lord Talbot our spirit was broken
The battle was over our army no more
We fled through the fields and the woods and the valleys
This shattering defeat it had ended our war

So let tambour beat slowly and banner hang lowly
We are now so weak where we once were so strong
And those who are left must return now to England
Leaving comrades to lie in French fields all too long

But forget not Lord Talbot and long live his memory
Remember his courage take heed from his fame
Then gather your companies and follow your captains
And the cross of Saint George shall rule France once again...

For God, Henry and England!!! 😛

"Breá" is the word you're looking for...but I think it's a bit tenuous all the same.

Work on your spelling first...I'd say.

Well, one thing's for sure, if Carling put as much effort into their beer as they do with their adverts between the RWC, it would probably taste considerably better...

The flags were blowing around, but the kicking looks quite accurate. I think both teams have been winning on the back of the running game rather than kicking, which I do like.
