(Twas a (rare) positive moment of threadery, I admit)
You said it would've been great if O'Driscoll had caught the rebound and scored... my follow up meant that if Kearney's break from his own touchline had resulted in him crossing the line and scoring, that would have been a greater moment. But I knew that James O'Connor would catch him. It was still a great moment, but not as great as it could have been.
Comprendé?
That Irish front row was amazing. One thing I don't get is playing the likes of Sheridan at tight with a MUCH shorter hooker. The Irish front row have a grand total of 1cm in height difference between them. Meaning they engage at the same speed and it is much harder for an oppo prop to break one off and work into the hooker. (Sorry, for the backs, split the front row,get your shoulder into the hooker's ribs and lever him away from his ball, disrupting the hooker's ability to strike clean ball)
The way they took the Aussie front row apart was brilliant. They will need a plan b when it comes to Wales mind.I like pretty back play, but I admire the large club approach more than the rapier when it comes to rugby. In fact I could happily watch an eighty min scrum 😳
Ah yes, it was Bowe. I'm sure I said, in chatting about the game this morning, that it was Bowe and my NZ colleague corrected me and said it was Kearney!
Sorry, for the backs, [s]split the front row,get your shoulder into the hooker's ribs and lever him away from his ball, disrupting the hooker's ability to strike clean ball[/s] it's the bit that the real men do while you're at the back worrying about your split ends
FTFY! 😉
Yeah don't worry I was double confused, didn't recognise your mistake in Kearney and read O'Connor as O'Connell.....
But yeah it seemed like Bowe ran out of steam, shame. There was another good run too was that Kearney?
Probably, he had a good game..
was that Kearney?
Yes, nearly got to the line...can't find a clip on YooToob.
Though I did find this: check out Kearnsy's comment just at the end of the clip. of course, nobody cares about RU in Autralia do they. Please let people be beating him over the head with this clip. 😀
They will need a plan b when it comes to Wales mind.
I hope that plan a for both Italy Wales would be to get the ball in phase play again, ASAP. We have struggled to get a solid set-piece over the last year, we just need to retain possession and get the ball back in play.
Ha funny. Although in the Aussies defence, when we beat them at the 1/4 final in the 2007 world cup, I was in Marseille at the game, before the game they were exactly the same as that above, after they were magnanimous in defeat. Had a good few pints with the Aussies in Marseille that saturday night watching France beat NZ cheered them up.
Oh I know on a personal level, they're fine...good as "gold" but if you make comments like that you gotta live or die by them 🙂
Australia are now my 19th team.
Oh I know on a personal level, they're fine...good as "gold" but if you make comments like that you gotta live or die by them
Yeah I agree, but my point was they take it back very very well. When we arrived at our hotel there was a good few Aussies, they told us we might as well go home now, wasting our time etc etc. After they bought us pints and said look who's going home now. Mucho sporting.
Have we done this yet?
"Ok, it's obvious the IRB are unjust. Wales get 7 days [between games], we get 3. Unfair treatment, like slavery, like the holocaust, like apartheid."Give Wales 3 days off and give Samoa a week! We would kill them!

He has a point though. 🙂
Blatant discrimination IMO. Wales falling further down my teams list. Definitely mid-teens now. 😐
I've been loving twitter for following rugby players. Saves me listening to the managers, especially Gatling.
He does indeed have a point. Matches should be about the game, not the TV audience (Even though I want to be able to watch the bigger games, of course!). As it is, the "lesser" nations get the short straw in terms of time.
Not sure it's quite up there with the Holocaust, mind you! 🙂
And in twitter news:
The green machine are White water rafting today. NZ government has asked that the forwards don't turn up as the river may be afraid to turn white. Also Tommy Bowe is having a 100m race with Mike Ross. Adam Jones has been invited to watch.

Latest news,
Having lost 100m race to Adam Jones, Mike Tindall is seen drunkenly proposing to a good looking dwarf. James Haskell meanwhile calls his team 'a bag of dicks' and heads towards the airport in a huff.

Hey, the players are getting the easy end of it.
I'm feeling jetlagged after just two weekends of getting up at random times of the night. I'm not sure that I can carry on.
My alcohol consumption has sunk to a record low because my body is so confused about where it is. Is it acceptable to get up at 4am and start drinkling, counting it as the night before? Probably not.
Give me 24hr solo bike races any time.

I'll let you know; I am off to Berlin and Poland with 38 schoolkids just as the knockouts start...What was I thinking? Mind you not as bad as whoever's wife is due on the day of the final!

Not a worry anyway...
So just quickly to go back to rugby...
When Ashton scored his second try a Georgian slid in after he had the ball down and looked to cause a hyperextension to his left elbow and he certainly looked extremely uncomfortable when shaking hands at the end. How does the STW rugby mind see it in the light of Lawes getting 2 weeks? IMO they are pretty similar events in that they are dangerous and without purpose, but ultimately not intended to cause serious injury. Is it worth another 2 weeks, will he get off lightly as a player from a minor nation that don't have the depth to replace him, or will it just be ignored?
He will be cited,if we are anything to go by. We are taught to look for what happens after the ball goes dead. One of these is a late hit,as above, another example is the prop who accidently stamps on a collapsed oppo. If he has not been done by now, then England will have to mention it to get citing comm to look.
I'm trying to feel a shred of sympathy for him, but I can't 😐
He is in my second team though.
I'm glad that's been mentioned Tim, cos that was so much worse than what Lawes did - Ashton had scored the try and was already getting up when the Georgian jumped on his arm.
Incidents during try-scoring really piss me off and that was one of the worst I've seen.. there was no point in it other than to cause injury.
Player should be banned from the rest of the tournament. (no great loss, I know)
Hasn't really been mentioned in the press from what I have seen, apart from a quick "ashton injured his elbow scoring his second try". Can't find any pics or vid so only going on what I saw at the time but it is someone who is not even in the shot in this pic that landed on him

so there wasn't much doubt of him getting it down so it seemed pretty cynical. Even if you don't like him it is a poor way to get injured
Also haven't seen if there is any news on how bad it is?
Sad to see Fourie out till next year as had hoped that he might get a flight over to replace Sheridan so there actually was a No7 in the squad too.
"Give Wales 3 days off and give Samoa a week! We would kill them!
Or, how about we have the WC at the end of our season when we're all on form and match fit, and YOU can do it after a summer off?

thank you for all the messages. really appreciated. good to win and happy to get a try at last. my arm is all good 2.

I seem to remember in the mists of fatigue that I rewound this to see what happened. The Georgian was coming in to prevent a try, not to cause injury. It wasn't overly late, just poorly timed, but could be seen to be a penalty if you see what I mean. If the Georgian was to be cited then a player would be cited almost every time a try was scored.
so there wasn't much doubt of him getting it down so it seemed pretty cynical.
Hmm, I'd say that it would be a pretty poor player who allowed a player to ground the ball just because it seemed a dead cert.
I'm not condoning foul play against anyone, England or not. 😆 I just think this was badly timed rather than cynical. Having said that I'm happy to be shown to be wrong if anyone has a clip of it so I can see it in a less befuddled state.
There is a picture of Dillydayglo punching Jonah Lomu after he had scored another try to defeat england.
There was a mention of Phil Kearns about 10,000 posts ago and it reminded me of something that happened in RWC 91.
The Australian team were staying in a hotel near the Marina in Swansea for the RWC. My father was walking the dogs (two very placid retrievers) around the dock when he saw Kearns and Jason Little standing there. Kearns sees the dogs, puts his hand out to say 'Nice dog', withdraws hand very quickly as normally good tempered dog tries to savage him.
Rugby history could have been so different, just because of my dog.....
dont think using a hand to injure an arm near the ball is really comparable with kneeing somone in the head. Going for the ball as somone is in the act of scoring is legit he was just a bit late.

that was funny, one of the few times Jonah looked angry. he looked like he was going to rip Dillys arms off before he was mobbed by congratulating players.
Hitler/Gatland finds out that Shane has retired.
Has it been posted already?
A-A it wasn't "a hand". I'll get it off the hightlights prog and youtube it. Although that'll probably take me so long we'll have forgotten about it 😛
I remember that, cannot find the picture. Damn. He was cited for that though so whats yer point?
edit - he was cited but not punished!

I thought it looked worse than Lawes going to put the guy into touch, much later.
Jings Jon; I opened that at work 😯
I thought it looked worse than Lawes going to put the guy into touch
you assume thats what lawes was doing but seeing as the bloke was already in touch and on the floor so out of the game anyway I will have to partially disagree (as I clearly dont rememeber the Ashton incident as well, I remember thinking it was out of order but not sure if its a citing).
Having said all that it raises the question of what the citing comissioners are doing if england have to point out something that happend in the act of scoring.
Meanwhile from our twitter correspondent DD...
@rwcbrianmooreSee, if we had a plate competition minor sides like Australia would still have something to play for
(17 Sept)
😆
Ouch! 🙂
And also from twitter:
@sebchabalQuel match des avant irlandais. Beau combat. Belle victoire de nos amis
What a guy. Love him. How he refers to Ireland as "our friends". Only in rugby do you get this kind of thing. 🙂
I've just seen Shane Williams' try! Brilliant by Halfpenny 🙂

you think the New Zealanders see SeeBass as an "ami"?
Having met Chabal on a number of occasions - once when he was so drunk he was using me as a walking stick - if he wants you as a friend you don't say 'non' 😉
Brilliant by Halfpenny
best thing about the try was 1/2p taking the time to adjust his cap as he accelerates away from the cover 😆
yeah but seeing as ashton was already over the line and so out of the game anyway...
Both could easily be excused as over zealous play, I dunno if Lawes was convinced that matey was out, as the georgian player also might have been unsure if ashton had got the ball down, although he was pretty late.
The lawes vid is here scroll to bottom there is no way lawes could be convinced that the bloke was in touch, and in this pic, lawes is already going down to scoop him up and he is still fighting for the ball.
I cannot see anyone changing direction now.

Whereas in ashtons case it a bit more obvious he is over the line
Although to be fair, its a well zoomed shot, but my memory of it is that the next guy comes a good while later, cant find a vid. Any vids out there?
as that picture shows though the argentina player is already on the floor so out of the game, Lawes going into a player on the ground is ilegal anyway he also doesnt have hold of the ball.
Any vids out there?
it'll be on the ITV web site but I got bored with all the adverts.
Going in to a "tackle" with your knee is also illegal. Harsh call, but illegal.
Haven't seen the Asthon incident, so can't comment.
What a crock, the players on the ground reaching for the ball, do you stand back and wait for the whistle? Never seen any player do that. Lawes is just backing up the tackle.
Lawes is just backing up the tackle.
With his knee. You aren't allowed to tackle with your knee, in case you didn't know.
hmm maybe I guess. Ahh well I'll just accept it as your 'harsh' CHF.
No bollocks, he is going into the tackle, it's jsut bad luck with the knee, it happesn to be the most forward part of him. Still a crock.
Just trying to watch the ashton thing now, if you fast forward the game they make you watch all the adverts you've skipped. The next time anyone on here complains about the licence fee I'm going to explode.
Edit. Just watched it, after punching the screen and cursing effing IBM adverts. Georgian was pretty late- but it just looks like zealous play, not deliberate in any way, does that make it still citable?
he is going into the tackle, it's jsut bad luck with the knee, it happesn to be the most forward part of him.
No luck about it. He led with the knee, which is an illegal and dangerous "tackle". Sorry. A harsh ban, I will agree, but still an illegal and dangerous "tackle".
I've just watched the Ashton late hit vid again, and again, and again. I'm an England fan and I remember when I watched the game I was outraged. However watching the full speed replay the Georgian is only fractionally late.
The slowmo replays made it look really bad, but at full speed it just looks like a normal incident.
I thought the Lawes citing was harsh as well tbh.
Anti-England sentiment alert. Who's showing bias against my second team?
Sorry he did not lead with his knee, I cannot see that in the pic or the videos.
Toys - go to the ITV website, look for the england georgia highlights - there is a short video of highlights with no adverts. Fast forward to the end and you have the Ashton try at full speed.
here: http://www.itv.com/rugbyworldcup/2011/matches/england-v-georgia/
Toys, 1:02 on the RugbyDump video. No attempt to "tackle" or take the contact within the laws of the game, such as using his shoulder for example. Led with his knee. Deliberate. I think we may have to agree to disagree.
Shame, as Laws has potential to be a great player if he'd just mature a little.
1)Ok what aa said is wrong as he is almost on the guy and he still actually isn't completely down or in touch, he goes into touch when lawes falls over him.
2) He has his arms out but matey is going down as he is arriving, hard to change direction or intention. What is clear is that the knee that makes contact is the rear knee, the "leading" knee does not make contact. That was not leading with his knee or going into the tackle with his knee. I think it was bad luck. There is no way that was an intentional kneeing.

EDIT ignore the times as the time on the vid gets stuck/doesnt change as you scroll through on pause..
Stuey top tip cheers.
I've just seen Shane Williams' try! Brilliant by Halfpenny
Isn't that the bit where he collects the ball, takes off whilst pushing his cap back on his head like a cartoon character? I lolled at that 🙂
Those pictures clearly show Argentinian on the floor, on the floor is out of the game, Lawes is stood up coming in. He then goes off his feet, first offence, on a prone player second offense and then knees him in the head knocking him out cold which is a third offense and certainly naughty. Had he been carded at the time he wouldnt have been banned IMO, a yellow card would have been fair I think.
First time I have seen the Lawes one and studied it.He is a lucky boy,he knew fine the player was out/ball away, did him anyway. If I saw that in a game I would have yellowed him.Remember how quickly these guys move and think as well. The player is well out and the ball is away as well.Lawes leads with his knees, and makes it look like he was committed, big hollywood roll was a nice touch. Lawes stuck one on him got caught this time; last/next time he doesn't,all part of the chance you take.
Hell I used to empty the oppo 9 or 10 in the first 2 mins safe in the knowledge you were not getting anything more than a telling off because you were the first in.Had to watch to other teams forwards for 78mins mind 😀
Now this is really taking the piss!!!! Waldrom Called up as No.8 to replace Nick Easter
Now 12 players away from Tigers At RWC + at least 5 long term injuries, how the **** are we expected to compete in the Premiership this season????
Here ya go, I've managed to upload the foul play on Ashton.
Now I don't care if you disagree with me, that after-try challenge was late, unnecessary and intentional.
Yup,that was a bad one.
Ok you can have your off feet, but I don't think off feet is a citable offense is it? He was cited for 10.4 which is striking with the knee, it looks more like the Argentinians head got hit with Lawes bollocks....
Like you said AA, he would have been better with a pen or yellow card. Never mind its moot now. I guess if you think Lawes had time then that georgian had ages to pull out so yeah put him up in front of the board.
In twitter news:
@sebchabalCe xv de départ pour jouer les blacks me plait. J'espère que Morgan va s'en sortir a l'ouverture.
Lawes - as I saw it at the time I though - "Knee drop" and I still think that
the one on Ashton? more marginal but maybe a penalty
In the clip that AA puts up Lawes is banged to rights, cynical and mean. Knee goes in first no attempt to wrap the man (how can you he is on the ground) should of got more than 2 games ban.
Going off that clip, he definitely led with his knee going into the 'tackle' - pretty lucky to get away with only a two game ban i reckon.
Can't comment on Ashton as I cant be objective 😉 I didnt realise he can score tries with out the swan dive thing.
Nugget isnt going to replace Lydiatt as he broke his arem playing for the Blues. Looks like he will be stuck on 99.
Italy to win today. But may get a little fright in the first half an hour.
Can't see Russia getting past Italy at the moment. Georgia might, but not Russia.
it looks more like the Argentinians head got hit with Lawes bollocks
Lawes must have a couple of cannon balls for bollocks if he can kock out an argentinian hooker with them 😯
and you accuse me of lacking objectivity!!
The ashton one is much less clear cut and its had to see but it looks like ashton placed the ball down and may have appeared as if it has been dropped from the angle the Georgian comes in on. Its not nice but its much less clear cut.
Like you said AA, he would have been better with a pen or yellow card
thats not what I said.
