Favourite "character" in Rugby? I am going to go for Allan "chunk" Jacobson. The man who ate all the pies! When he retired edinburgh produced a new trophy in his honour - in the shape of his ear! He also saved someone from a burning house IIRC.

Honourable mention for Adam Jones - funny as heck ( but too "clever" in the scrums)

I think it would be a better and more pleasant challenge to name favourite “characters” from the other 5 nations. Doesn’t have to be all five, just not someone from “your” team. 😀

Like it DD -

Wales - Adam Jones. A genuinely funny guy
Ireland - has to be Paul " I'll fight for you all day" O'Connell
England - Austin Healey - has there ever been a more annoying little git of a player
Italy - can't really think of one
France - Ibanez for his comments on Szarzewski. " he is too pretty to be a hooker - but I am sure a few years in the scrum will change that"

I know we all like a bit of Squidge Rugby, but there's some very detailed analysis from the RWC Games England V AB's and England v SA which makes absolutely fascinating watching and learning about the modern strategy, coaching and execution:

Wibble Rugby

Who says Rugby's a simple game eh.  Very interesting how Jones spent 4 years coaching how to beat the AB's, but SA spent the same 4 years working out how to beat everybody with some alternate interpretations.  Opinions on the SA coach on the sidelines will be divided when you see him calling Englands plays, I'm sure...

When does rugby get going again?

Super Rugby AU and Aotearoa have been running for a few weeks now (NZ close to finishing their comp!). And very entertaining it has been.

England starts tonight.

Pro 14 next weekend.

He’s not very good at interpreting the news is he.  So here’s Eddie looking for the next big things in England’s back row and Mr breaky arms who’s admitted playing sub standard in the RWC now pops up and tells us he can’t support his colleagues because he’s a religious zealot.

oh well, good bye Billy.

I'm not sure what to make of Billy and all those south africans not taking a knee. I honestly cant work out what I think as someone who felt pressured to clap for the nhs...

In other news Dr Jaw has covid and is out of this sundays game for The Dregs.

I'm watching Scarlets game on S4c. Pro14 match attendances seem much the same as pre covid 😉😉😜

Not sure😀I approve of Stef Evans lockdown hair cut, but I did just see him make a tackle so thats nice!

Johnny Williams looks like he could be a good player for Scarlets.

Pro 14 semi finals this weekend - and Edinburgh are in them! Also Cockerill has signed on for another two years. I cannot believe how much influence he has had on turning Edinburgh from mid table to one of the top teams. He also seems to be enjoying being the Edinburgh coach.

Ruck laws are confusing me. Back in the dark ages you tried to turn the man so your team tucked over and got the ball (obviously you got a shoeing). Now that would be penalised as you're on the wrong side and not rolling west/east. That's the ruck finished completely.

there is no change to the ruck laws and hasn't been for years. The refs have been asked to police rolling away more harshly because people not rolling away slows the game.

As a ref, there hasn't been a change to the laws around the ruck, it is being policed tighter in the professional game that's all and ensuring the slow rolling away players don't impede the 9. Include in that policing coming in at the side and off feet and it's being reffed as we would in the amateur game. The trial law changes around kicks in and out of the 22 are being done in the Australian games.

I find Farrell a bit of an enigma. He is a dreadful bad tempered dirty player on the pitch but apparently a model professional as well and really good with young fans and so on

I am so glad he got the red tho - he should have had many by now and the WR website actually uses one "tackle" where he got away with it as an example of a red card

should be a long ban for that .Swinging arm tackle. should be six weeks at least for that but being Farrell - the inheritor of McCaws invisibility cloak - I bet they find some way to let him play against Leinster

Well, will see where they see that challenge, given his history (good behaviour officially), guitly plea etc. The it goes on: 9.13 A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders.Low-end:2 weeks Mid-range:6 weeks Top-end:10+ weeks. Max:52 week

That should be top end - but it will be low end with suspension halved for bringing the biscuits so he can play against Leinster.

Thats a deliberate swinging arm to the head. Intended to injure. Never low enough, blindsided the man.

Agree TJ, no mitigation can cover it, clear line of sign, came across a long way to cover and arm always back and swinging.

Good, West is best, although I didn't think you got a single 50/50 decision during the game. End of an era because we will be back to put the tourist attraction 15 in their place properly next year in your wee 1/12 scale "stadium" (points arse in TJ's direction)

This video seems to show it "better" can't see any mitigation. Comments about mis-timed seem clutching at straws.
I think as a hard playing professional he is up there but I still can't believe that his tackle technique hasn't bee sorted and also that he's got away with it so often. Lol is struggling to be kind.

Contact to the head is minimum six weeks,I suspect that the other factors looked at, time and clear line of sight would increase that ban for anybody except him.

Many people have commented that Atkinson drops as he changes direction so Farrels aim for his shoulders went tits up. I don't doubt it.
This and a billion previous crap tackles by Farrel only go to show that he needs to learn to tackle lower to ameliorate the risk of the player changing height just due to footwork, which happens pretty much every other step anyway. Tacklers responsibility, he should not be aiming for shoulder high tackles.
Shame as he is a great player otherwise. I guess its to do with training and muscle memory, he probably needs to be retrained..

To be fair the most surprising part of that tackle was he avoided injury, every other cardable tackle seems to leave him writhing in agony.

I think it'd be fairer if the ban and while not playing part of the time is used for specific tackle training. With the understanding that next time it's really serious.

Not just for him but all offences that are of a "technique" nature.

Ban would also be fairer if he missed the England Italy game.  Most of Sarries games are worthless at the moment so hit him where it hurts.

+1 I was writing exactly the same.  He’s the England captain, on Tv and in the spotlight a lot and an example to many young kids.

Yeah the Leinster game will hurt him and Sarries, but thats effectively a 1 game ban.

Big games like the match against Exeter at the weekend are still meaningless to Sarries this season. I think they should have set an example and show that this kind of reckless tackle means missing big games. It's not like its his first time he's done it, just that its his first getting caught.

Either that or tackle training as said above.

Or even make him pass a tackle test and put him on a 10 match warning if he can't retrain/restrain himself.

I am England and a big Farrel fan, despite his moronic slips (not just tackles, remember that big wales game where he looked like a single celled organism), but that ban is in no way fair, really as others said it's only one game. It is not enough, he needs to know that he has not got away with it, will not get away with it again and needs to comprehensively revise his tackling method.
Opportunity missed and next time he will cost us. Dissapointed TBH.

If Farrell really is the model pro many say he is then surely sitting in the stand for the biggest game of the season is going to hurt and will act as a wake up call as will the ban.

I struggle watching the games in Welsh. Unfortunately despite many years of (not) learning it at school, pretty much all I can say is “excuse me” and “I like coffee”.

Talking of Cuthbert, Priestland has looked good for Bath recently.

He is now qualified on residence grounds and is either available now or will be in a couple of months - I forget which. He will be able to play in the next round of internationals.

Gauss

Duhan is an absolute freak in that he is both hugely fast and powerful. A bit lazy when he first arrived but Cockers would not put up with that and he has improved his all round game. He runs thru and over people in a very Lomu like way. makes a good pairing with Darcy Graham on the other wing - the bludgeon and the rapier.
