Hi all
bit of advice please im looking to convert a block built outbuilding into a new salon for my wifes beauty business. its a single skin block work wall and I need to redo the flat roof on it. I will be laying new 18mm ply first but what shall I cover it with - felt or the rubber stuff by firestone etc
just checking peoples experience with it, the building is around 3.5x 4.5m and the roof has a gentle slope built into it.
also whats the best way to insulate and plaster it im thinking drill carcasing studwork onto the block and pack with insulation then board over - do I need a membrane between the walls and the insulation etc
sorry lots of questions any help gratefully received
I used EPDM for 4m x 2.5 m roof placed 120mm celltex over ex felt then osb3 boards then epdm ..not enough fall on 4m length so get a little ponding when i do the garage will aim for 100mm fall over about 3m. there are lots of vid on you tube and suppliers sites. Do decking bits then build fascias up to underside of decking avoids ponding. warm roof should not then need extra ventilation if plasterboarded etc. probably need membrane behind blockwork then insulate.some sort of cladding over external block? most are quite porous. Planning permission needed?
good luck
EDPM.... Edge detailing and finishing will be need to be looked at. The material is very thin and therefore prone to ghosting the surface below i.e I wouldn't utilise it on a roof that could be viewable from the ground.
I would run the new internal walls independently. i.e span from floor to roof. To resolve the potential for damp transfer I would externally timber overclad the existing walls and provide a breatherable membrane. Far better to stop water coming into the building then trying to redirect it back out again. Detailing of the plinth at low level could be by way of an painted DPC (ensure UV fastness). I would use a friction fit high quality fibre insulation between the studs.
Detail wise I would suggest you have someone look at it. The use of the salon needs to assessed for condensation risk along with the existing / new ventilation requirements. (I've never been in one so unsure of the processes involved)
Planning Permission. Hmmm change of use.... without looking at the guidance in detail logic would dictate that it would be required.
I replaced my felt roof for EPDM a few years ago, look at my posts and pics on this thread:

What about glass fibre? Barrel of resin, pigment, matting and a roller.
Did ours in fibreglass, it was pretty straightforward. Lots of ready made profiles for the edges. For insulation I'd go for a warm deck. Put the insulation on top of the roof as a continuous slab then glass over. If you pack between joists then you'll need some ventilation or it'll rot pretty quickly.
