Rejoin network.

FFS ! - now the pc has reconnected without me doing anything new

I've switched everything off loads of times, router's been outside in case it needed to cool down. I've even gone as far as deleting the network drivers (or whatever) in one of the laptops and then rediscovering it; made no difference at all

WHen routers die, do they do it intermittently and weirdly ?

If the pc is connected via an Ethernet and the phone is working via wifi (are you sure it's not using the mobile network) then that's really bizarre. As above switch the router off, wait a bit then restart. Plus check obvious, ie ismethernet cable plugged in correctly

laptop has now found the wireless network but reports no internet access. Phone still merrily working on same wifi network

😈

definitely via wifi - I've disabled mobile data and if I stop the phone wifi it refuses to load new pages

(pc is now working via ethernet but wasn't half an hour ago (while the phone was OK on wifi all along)

Bizarre. Might be worth downloaded router manul from Internet then doing a complete reset (ie more than just an on off). This will probably require you to know the broadband login details. My old netgear router had a specific IP address which meant by typing that into the browser when connected by cable you could modify router parameters and if ourse check it was working.

That looks like a rather suspicious set of DNS servers to me.

EDIT:

Maybe not. https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Is the phone connected to your router, or next door's?

Can you ping external sites? From a command prompt, ping google.co.uk
Does the router show that it's connected?

Sounds like it might be time to call your ISP, get them to check the line / replace the router.

The DNS is fine - that's Google's public DNS server.

phone is definitely connected to my wifi and works constantly as far as I can tell

laptop intermittent - connects to wifi but says that internet not available (SOME of the time), occasionally connects OK

Router thinks it's OK but very occasionally I can't open it up via ethernet

OP couple of things stand out as a bit odd in this configuration - how come your router is on .254? Do you manually set the range of allowable addresses to sit in the 192.168.100 range? Not that this is wrong per se, but on a home network I'd usually expect the router to sit on .1

I'd look at possible address conflicts if you've set any manual IPs too, or possibly locked an IP against the wrong MAC address with address reservation. Remove any manually set IPs from the router config and the clients, see if they work over DHCP, then set manuals up again if you need them?

PS you haven't added anything new to the network recently have you like a repeater? If so check that it's not trying to act as a DHCP server.

Or a neighbour trying to be funny/clever setting up a wifi router using the same SSID?

Nowt wrong with the router being on 254 (mine's on 200) - it's just a number after all.
If I were the OP I'd approach it like this:
1) switch everything off for a few mins, then switch the router on.
2) switch pc on, change the IP address to a static one and connect it via ethernet (no reason for a PC to be on dhcp). If it doesn't see the router, change cable/ports and if it still doesn't see it then chuck the router away. If it does move on to 3)
3) Switch laptop on and give it a static IP address also. If it can ping the router then change the IP addy to a dhcp assigned one. If it doesn't get an address then the router needs the firmware reinstalling - if this does not fix it then get a new router.

Life is too short!
