My 1.8tdci Focus has just come back from a minor service. Now sounds dog-rough when accelerating through 2000rpm, with vibration through the pedals.

Also has some intermittent starting problems - doesn't turn over at first attempt sometimes but starts OK next time.

Given they've apparently just changed the fuel filter, what else could they have cocked up or missed?

Start-up ..glo-plugs ?
You need to take it back to where it was serviced and get someone to go out and road test with you in attendance ..

Not glow plugs. Not sure what it would be though. Maybe a sensor has failed, crankshaft position or something.

Don't think it's glow plugs. TBH I'm reluctant to hand it back to the shower that MOT/serviced it (guess who?), although I may have to. I'd rather take it to a decent indy and get it sorted out there.

Dodgy injector maybe? Is it worth doing a leak-back check?

A

Possibly, just interested to know if the symptoms could point to a dodgy/incorrectly fitted filter or whether it could to take a while for this kind of thing to get tracked down.

It's an old car, was hoping to run it for another year or so without too many big bills.

Had similar issues on our Bmw 320d turned out to be an injector had given up.
If your near Tewkesbury I can recommend Mann Autoservices, very good service.
Look for a diesel specialist near you or as Andy says get a leak-back test done.

Cheers for the offer Daffy - I'm oop north though.

I do have some minor 'trust issues' with the garage that did the MOT. Based on silly little things like blown bulbs that had been checked the evening before it went in.

Is it worth trying a diesel injector cleaner product and a longer run, or is that a bit pointless?

I don't know that exact version of the engine but roughness going through 2000 rpm on my tdci mondingo is generally one of two things, EGR valve being full of crap, or MAF sensor not reporting properly. I'd look at the EGR first, assuming it has one.

Lack of Otto cycle?

Air leak at fuel filter would cause poor starting - and possibly lead to rough running - I would start there- if the garage were untidy doing filter they could have got dirt down side of filter- not good.

Was it alright going into the service? If so then probably two things:

Air filter cover not installed properly or they damaged the maf after removing the lid on the box. Check they have reconnected the maf (usually a three pin plug near the large hose close to the filter box). Car will still run but rough.

Second thing is as mentioned above the fuel filter. I have had to check a few after bad installs where the o ring has been crushed (but these were fabric filters in a housing... If it's a cartridge type / screw on this is less likely to be installed wrong.

Also assuming kwick fit type place... Def check the oil filter! These muppets fitted my brothers oil filter upside down and crushed it doing up the cap. ****s.

Could be tappets? Some combination of noises that might have been masked by a heavier oil? Did they replace like for like? Just guessing obviously.

Cheers guys. Yes, was done by the kind of fitters that you apparently can't get better than. 😀

Don't know my arse from elbow under the bonnet of a car, but will have a squint if it ever stops raining.

This is what you are looking for

Check its plugged in and that hose clamp is tight. May not be exactly in that location but they all look pretty similar. Airfilter will be in a big plastic housing.

Also check that they have not disconnected any vacuum hoses (just see if there is anything obvious that looks as though its not connected to anything).

Worth taking back though... If it was fine going in and rubbish coming out then something cack fit have done is the most likely cause (unless you have been really unlucky and another fault has occurred totally unrelated). A minor service really is just oil and filters and nothing more.

Make sure it's a genuine Ford fuel filter on a Tdci - non genuine will kill an injector(s).

Also make sure correct grade oil used as tdci uses oil pressure to tension timing chain - wrong oil = lack of tension&jumped chain

Don't know my arse from elbow under the bonnet of a car,

As a case in point, I've re-read my OP. They have changed the oil filter, not the fuel filter! 😳 Apologies!

Is there an easy way to check what grade oil they've stuck in? Apart from looking at the receipt, that is.?

Unfortunaly not Martin. The receipt may say one thing but you can't be sure what they stuck in. Some engines can be really picky with oil types and there are many grades and viscosities.

Worth checking receipt anyway as they MAY have used the correct oil. At least it will tell you that at least they looked up the correct type.

I hate cack fit with a passion. They sometimes syphon the oil from the filler tube too (saving time) as opposed to dropping from the sump.

Just to revisit this one - seems like there's a couple of separate things going on.

The intermittent starting problem is troubling me more now - from cold, the starter motor/flywheel makes a loud grind but doesn't turn over on first attempt. Next attempt, it starts fine.

Things are beginning to mount up as far as this car is concerned! Probably worth less than a grand now even with a year's MOT, and knackered flywheel etc would certainly be terminal.

WWSTWD? Think about changing the starter, or just shift it on?

On reflection, pretty much all the symptoms could be dual mass flywheel related - vibration, poor starting etc.

Think I'll be trying to get this shifted before it goes pop.

Anyone want to buy an 07 Focus with 12 months MOT? 😀

Hard starting and roughness can also be caused if the timing has jumped. Not sure if that engine is a chain or belt, but the Transit is well known for jumping a tooth if bump started, as the hydraulic tensioner leaves the chain slack when bumping the engine. The engine sounds tight and squeaky when starting if thats happened.

Quick update - was clutch/DMF etc etc. Started properly failing but luckily managed to limp and double-declutch it all the way to the dealership to trade the bugger in.
