A mate of mine live there. I have not idea why. It's the second most depression place in the UK. Before you ask: Middlesbrough.

it's next to Sheffield

actually I worked there for nearly 2 years. depending on your route to get there, traffic can be shocking. Town centre is surprisingly pleasant (or was in 1997-98). Big retail park on the way out to Rawmarsh (Parkgate)

right then....

Rotherham is not as bad as people make out, that's the first thing to say. There are some really quite pleasant areas that aren't far from the town. Wentworth, Wickersley, Whiston are three nice suburbs, and Wentworth has the claim of Europe's largest fronted country house in Wentworth Woodhouse- now a private residence, but with a large deer park that you can walk through.

Wickersley's got a few new bars too (trendy wine bars to suit them itinerant Islington types) 😉

The town centre has been the victim of economic decline both from the collapse of steel and coal, but also thanks to retail competition from both Sheffield, Meadowhall and out of town retail parks. As a result it is a shadow of its former self, but still quite a pleasant town centre by day.

The night life isn't much to write home about (especially to Islington!), and you'll get a better night out in nearby Sheffield.

Transport wise, it's perfectly placed. Easy to access all the motorway network, good train links to Sheffield and Doncaster rail 'hubs', and Robin Hood Airport is less than 20 miles away.

You'll find a lot of people live in Rotherham but work in Sheffield and Doncaster. As a result, it's growing and there are a lot of new housing estates going up around the area. Bramley, a village in the SE of the town has seen massive growth for example.

Riding wise - well, there's a fair amount of stuff really. Lots of cheeky trails that are ok, and a good amount of BW stuff. Also, you're very close to Sherwood Pines, the Peak District and Wharncliffe Woods.

The North York Moors are about 90 mins away by car either on the M18 or the A1, and London is about 2.5 hours down the road on a good day.

I grew up in Rotherham and I'm quite fond of the place really - I often find myself sticking up for it in the face of Jamie Oliver fans and others.

Yes the chuckle brothers are from there. Yes there are areas that are best avoided - but tell me one place in the UK that doesn't have its undesirable parts.

If you want any more info I'm happy to help out.

Oh, and welcome to the North

😀

Sorry for the Hijack...

and Wentworth has the claim of Europe's largest fronted country house in Wentworth Woodhouse

The book about the history of that house, the surrounding community, coal industry and the stranger-than-fiction Wentworth dynasty is genuinely one of the most fascinating books I've read in ages. Black Diamonds - sounds crap but I can't recommend it enough.

Sorry, have nothing valuable to add to the Rotherham debate. I'm from Sheffield. S'areyt.

It's just a small town in Sheffield...

Ha, like Chesterfield and Barnsley really.

I was born and lived there for my formative years. I moved to Cumbria in 1975. I have never been back.

Isn't it Jeremy Clarkson's Home town?

As has been said, lots of good riding near it and up and down the M/A1. And On-One are moving to Meadowhall just across that big road at the western end of it.
