As in the title really,

Have a Golf MK7.5 and wish to fit roof bars with a bike carrier system that's fairly easy to remove, I surf, so a roof mounted system is my preferred option.

Thule are coming in at 199.95 for their 'wing bar' for aerodynamic's and fuel efficiency, any recommendations for other alternatives with experience using them?

Cheers

I've got a Whispbar one. I leave it on all the time so I needed a quiet one. Watch the YouTube video.
Perfect for my surfboard when I take it away.

Great! Thanks - will look into Whispbar. Does the manufacturer offer bike carrier options for the bar?

Atera bars and bike carriers here.

Nicely made and have the bonus of being designed to not need the rubber infill on the bars along the T track.

With a few exceptions most bike carriers should fit most T track aero bars (and also have adapters available for square bars). There are the occasional bars that use an odd sized t track.

A shade cheaper than Thule and came as a good value package deal from roofbox.co.uk. Other online sellers may do a similar thing where you pick and mix and make quite a big saving.

We also made a roof rack assembly jig. A bit of ply with two parallel battens about 80cm apart. The roof rack bars are put against the battens then the bike carriers slid in. This way you can assemble it all at ground level and (ideally) 2 person lift on to the roof knowing it's all square.

Note I think the jig / pre assembly thing will only work if you have an estate with roof rails.

3 cars ago, I had a Mk6 Golf. I bought an Atera rack from Roofbox-brilliant rack and fitted in seconds.

Whispbar is made by Yakima, who also do bike carriers. I’ve just fitted their Frontloader bike carriers that clamp the front wheel rather than the frame. A good system.
