Here goes:
Do I need to remove and attach the T-slot bolts every time I remove the rack from the car?
Or does the rack with the T-slot adapters fitted then slide into the T-slot bar?
I am a bit confused.

Rack: Yakima HighRoad

Alternative: do I just not bother with the T-slot and use the default HighRoad strap fitting instead?
Don't know that rack specifically but when I've had aero bars and t fittings in the past they can be slid out the end of the roof barswith t fittings still on the bike rack bit. Release and slide. 🙂
I replaced some old Thule Prorides with Highroads, partly because you don’t have to faff to put them on the other side of the car, back to front, etc and partly for the strap attachment. The T track thing always bothered me because it whistles so if I was using the racks without cycle carriers I’d have to put the rubber insert in.
The strap attachments seem very good, I’d just use those if I were you. They have a steel band and the cover can be locked so they are secure against opportunistic thievery.
Edit: Just looked at the adaptors. I’d say they stay attached to the rack, you then slide the whole lot onto the bars. Probably need to be tightened once in place, which I’d guess that thing that looks like a stud key is for.

@tonyd - I think I will start with your recommendation to use the strap attachments.
I have a Highspeed with the straps and I purchased the t bolts too.
The bolts can slide off attatched to the Highspeed just like Thule bike racks. I wouldn't leave the bolts in the rood rack.
TBH the straps are so good, I wouldn't bother with the T bolts....
