Currently looking at a new roller shutter garage door

Quotes from two companies for what seems to be the same thing (2.2m wide, 55mm slats) bar one using Somfy electric bits vs Ellard ones on the other are £2.2k vs £1.7k. (inc sensor, alarm, external manual release)

Then I find https://rollerdooruk.online/ which seems half the price again (but doesn't include fitting, which I'm sure isn't too hard).

Any garage door experts in the house? Is there actually any difference between these cheaper online ones vs the expensive ones both local and national companies have quoted me for? (apparently all come with a 5 year warranty, and pics imply that the online ones use somfy bits).

Not all roller doors are created equal, slats can vary in thickness and height, the side rails can come with or without brush seals, the rollers can come with or without covers, sensors, remotes, lip seals etc.

Ours is a cheap one, said to be insulated, but the slats are only 8mm thick. There were no seals, no cover, etc. It works just fine as a door, but if I had to do it again, I’d either buy a Hormann roller or a side sectional.

Thanks Daffy.

I just spoke to rollerdoor.online ... they use an Ellard motor, somfy electrics (inc sensor and alarm), includes a cover box (mandatory for entrapment laws apparently).
They're apparently 55mm ALUTECH slats (identical to the samples I was shown when I got a quote from the more expensive company, and seem to include side and bottom seals too)

Warranty is pretty much the same.

So it all seems to be identical, aside from being £1-1.5k cheaper. Surely I'm missing something, or is that just the markup that these companies work on?

Install is quite easy but time consuming, defo need two people to do it.

I’ve said this before on here but it bears repeating- check the security features on the doors if you want it to protect the contents of your garage from scrotes. Some have decent security, some try but don’t succeed and others don’t even try (Hormann told us their roller door is to keep the weather out, not people).

Rio, do you know how rollers differentiate by security? I see some motors spec'd by a Nm rating so assume that more NM = harder to overcome the motor, but as I understand when not in use the motor is effectively locked on all of them?

Honestly anything will be more secure than what I currently have. With a car in the way and camera overlooking the garage combined with a new door, it feels like a good level of security to me. As people normally say, "if they want to get in they will find a way"

I'm not an expert, but you need some kind of mechanism to stop the door being raised from the bottom when it's shut. The motor won't do this for you although some we looked at tried. Ours has a sort of locking mechanism where pins go into a metal comb when it's shut so you can't force it up. When we went to look at some others Mrs R tried to raise each one from the bottom. The worst was the Hormann where she could easily raise it enough to get something underneath to lever it open, hence our query to Hormann, the answer to which surprised even the salesman. Some are sold with a "secure by design" certification which claims to have some sort of police backing but may or may not mean anything. Anyway, ask the vendors and see what they say, at least then you'll have some idea what you're getting.

We learned the hard way, even with CCTV and the alarm going off they still managed to lift the roller door enough to bust the motor and be in and out in under 10 seconds and make off with a S Works Enduro and a S Works Stumpy.

The busted door was replaced with a Seceuroglide Excel fitted by a local fitter

I don't know if this helps you but I had a Somfy one installed a couple of years back for £1200. Remove old one and tip, supply and fit new one including electrics. Maybe your original quotes are too expensive?

I got a Somfy controller on mine. It's great, remote control and can be programmed to operate another 3 items aswell. You can set it to close automatically after 30 seconds of being open and about 100m range which again is well cool. Has alarms and safety features too.

Thanks for the tips guys. Yep it sounds like my quotes are a bit high- the online 'fit yourself' quote was £700. I've requested a price from the securoglide ones as well, although I'm expecting that to be on the higher end of the spectrum!
