I don’t know how anybody leaves, really: this site is such a part of my daily routine. Although I don’t really post much at all, I spend so much time reading threads that it would genuinely leave quite a void.

I’d probably get more into Reddit, or I suppose actually start talking to my wife sat next to me. 🙂

Have we considered accounts being inhabited by other people?

I haven't heard WorldClassAccident mention the Big Bike Bash for months. Apparently it is a really great bike event in the south of England (yes, the south does exist) where there is also a beer festival and a live music festival.

There are rumours that the mighty Ton attended one year and commented "not bad"

Anyway, why isn't WorldClassAccident promoting the BigBikeBash.rog.uk any more?

He seems to have moved on to promoting excellent but affordable art at NicksArtStuff.com

Can this be the same person?

I had a few pints with him in Brizzle a few weekends back. He’s in fine fettle, is under protection as an endangered species (lesser spotted Malvern Sasquatch), doesn’t STW no mo’, but is in very good form.

Yup, in Montriond. Afaik, approx 13% of snowboarders in the area are now using Nazi mitts. 😂

MrsFry was great. She flounced when we didn't add 'bitch' to the swear filter. Not that the moderators ever had any control over that anyway. Shame.

mandog, Trouty died a while ago,

Always sad to read something like that. I was just thinking reading this thread is a bit like reading the obituary pages but that's a little too close to home. There was a chap on here years ago (i had a ten year break) maybe around 2006, who had a rare form of bone cancer. I can't remember his name, maybe 'Bullheart' but his posts were always quite inspirational. I fear to ask the outcome of his situation but would like to know all the same.

Yes he passed away a few years back. He is buried in a beautiful natural cemetery on the South Downs.

And yes he was indeed inspirational, although I never met him as a mark of respect I cycled down and attended his funeral.

Edit: His original username was Pete's gaff and he changed it to Bullheart after his heart was patched with bovine tissue.

Pass on a hello from me please. Stoner was a proper gentleman, I met him in real life, but I would imagine (whatever his reasons might have been) that the environment on here is now simply too hostile for a Tory voter to engage in debate, even for a Tory wet/Ken Clark supporter like Stoner.

Basically stw has been politically cleansed in recent years, which imo is a tragedy. Mainstream conservative opinions are hardly ever aired on here these days, I am amazed that mefty still occasionally bothers, although less and less. Which imo is a huge loss for stw.

LOL you should see what it's like on dating apps - the single most common refrain on profiles (apart obviously from 'not into ONS') is 'no Tories' (I've voted for all three main parties in general elections so not sure if that counts?)

Oh that's very sad, but not wholly unexpected I guess. I can imagine his funeral must have been quite something to attend.

Ken Clark

Part of the 80's gang of yobboes who put in place the attitudes that got us where we are today. The cleansing is due to there being no moderate Tories anywhere in mainstream politics (well unless we look at Sir Kier).

As I’ve been on this forum for close on twenty years, since 2003 IIRC, or at least some time before the Big Havk, there have been a great many forum inhabitants who’ve disappeared, with great sadness in some respects, like Jamie, who’s photoshop efforts were always hugely enjoyable.😕

Bullheart sadly finally succumbed to the inevitable a little while ago, but he went down swinging.

Anyone's entitled to view their opinions. It's just that STW forums denizens are fast to call out shitbags and that doesn't sit well with 'mainstream conservative opinions'.

call out shitbags

Sorry are you suggesting that the Tory voters who now no longer post, certainly not on the political threads, were "shitbags"?

As I said previously, I always considered Stoner a gentleman, and he always respected people with wildly different political views and life experiences to his own, if they showed him some respect.

I found his contributions from a Conservative supporter perspective both interesting and useful.

What on earth makes you think I don't already? 😆

On a serious point though, the idea that you would only ever vote for one party is at best myopic and at worst the trait of an ideologue. The party you vote for should be the party that is best for everyone at the time the election is taking place and that might change depending on the prevailing conditions.

People who only ever vote for one party, i.e. without considering whether the alternatives might not be in everyone's best interests, are voting in a very selfish and blinkered way IMO. That is not to say that if you do always vote one way, that that's wrong; it's only the unwillingness to consider the alternatives with an open mind that I believe makes for a poor choice.

call out shitbags and that doesn’t sit well with ‘mainstream conservative opinions’.

I really don;'t know what makes you think it's acceptable to call people that in a public forum. Even if you're not directly addressing any individual in particular, you are demonstrating a level of bigotry that is sadly poisoning the political left currently and making it hard for moderate/centrist voters to vote that way.

If you want to understand why Le Pen is currently vying for office then you can draw a pretty much straight line between attitudes like yours and the rise in popularity of far right politics; it’s a ****you’ response. Same thing happened with Trump and Brexit. Even where the party you oppose is genuinely alienating people it does not serve democracy well to adopt such a dismissive and hate filled attitude.

It was one person's comment. Let's not drag this thread down a political rabbit hole.

Apologies for mentioning the political angle in the first place but I think it's reasonable to assume that the growing hostility towards people with certain political opinions (or shitbags apparently) must have contributed to them no longer bothering to post.

he always respected people

My experience was slightly different. He was unwilling to explain and justify why finance did what finance did to the overall detriment of society.

Can no more accuse the Tories of this than you can Labour.

I believe Labour took over from the 80's wreckers and as such did not start the rot. There was an unwillingness to address the management failings at the time that still continues but without the organised labour brake on excesses that martinets will foist on others when there is nothing to temper it.

Unwillingness to explain and justify what finance does doesn't necessarily suggest a lack of respect.

Maybe a fuller quote of my comment might be appropriate :

he always respected people with wildly different political views and life experiences to his own, if they showed him some respect.

I don't know about in your case Sandwich but I do know that French Jaun used to seriously wind up Stoner, because despite having nearly identical political views as me diplomacy wasn't very high up on French Jaun's priority list.

I'm useless at spotting the duplicate account users, I've a few suspicions over time based on style and even some regular turns of phrase or specific words they use (even in one case a regular misspelling).

So they may be on here still in new names but what happened to Teamhurtmore and Turnerguy and the few other brexit cheerleaders, did they slope off (bad, they had opinions even if I think they were totally wrong) or still her ein other guises?

Having met Stoner, my own view was that he was a fairly nice guy.

TeamHurtMore didn’t really start as a Brexy, and I don’t think he really became one. I think he was a little less simplistic than that. I had some good (electronic) chats with him.

And I actually miss Jambalaya, I disagreed with him immensely on much of politics and Brexit in particular, but he was human, and in amongst the political wrangling he showed a good deal of sympathy for things going on in my life (same stuff many of us have been through - I’m not in anyway special).  Still think he was wrong in working to destabilise both the UK and Europe - but he’d disagree.

Yeah teamhurtmore was definitely a remainer, and he argued strongly in favour of the EU. However after the referendum he supported the Tory government position of accepting the result, which it should be remembered was also initially the Labour Party's position.

He also used to constantly allude to having connections in government and knowing that, despite what we could all see was happening, 'the grown-ups' were taking care of everything behind the scenes and it was all going to work out. No need to worry.

I'm not surprised he didn't stick around to defend his patronising responses to forum user who questioned his understanding.

Didn’t thm get banned for abusing mods off forum? I found him a bit of a knob in the end, whenever challenged on his viewpoint he would either just ignore the question or obfuscate, in the end he had little credibility despite his repeated claims to be an economics expert with”connections “.
Jamby on the other hand always seemed a nice guy.

Mrstoast, Esme from the top of my head.
Other ladies who are still around but hardly post - ahsat, ebygomm, and Clover.

Apparently I was on a ride in the Peak District with Alex and his southern riding buddies, one of whom was Stoner. This is many years ago now. Sad that he didn't say hello.

I was suggesting that 'mainstream conservative opinions' are generally pretty shitty. "I'm alright, bollocks to you, we don't like them because they're not as good as us." That's the Tory way, it's a pyramid scheme ideology based on intolerance and exceptionalism.

You can extrapolate that to being a measure of someone's character (or not) however you like, I wasn't implying any individuals. Rather, if someone thinks that controversial opinions are going to go unchallenged and don't like it when they are, they're in the wrong place.

Is it possible to be bigoted against bigots?

I'm pretty sure THM was banned though I can't remember the exact circumstances now. Jamba definitely wasn't, he talked utter shite but he never broke any forum rules and - seemingly contrary to the beliefs and despite the claims of some - there would have to be exceptional circumstances to merit perma-banning someone for their "opinion." Turnerguy I have no idea either way.

Reading back from the beginning of this thread, saw the link back to twelve years ago - so many names I’d forgotten! Scary, really, and rather sad in a way. What was really strange was a mention of Numbutz, and someone had posted a Twitter link; astonishingly, it’s still active, and showing a post from last month, with a video of hangliding with black vultures.
Just spooky, that.

He didn't know how to create a toxic fart though. I remember thinking at the time his strategy was all wrong and he should have been going for an emptier stomach approach. He owned the outcome though.

Great times.

Always good to see that over the years so many grudges and annoyances have been 'forgotten'...very much like real life but just like in real life, always a bit sad when the old stuff is dredged up...

Saying that though, a. lot of the names are recognised and I never had issues with anyone (but I don't tend to spend much time on the political threads so probably avoided all that stuff from everyone).

lots i have ridden with over the years, sadly a few have past.
marsdenman, troutie, simonbarnes (of boggies fame). some great memories.

one thing that makes me sad tho when i come onto the forum nowadays (not often). the same sad few are still trying their best to suck all the joy out of lots of posts. sad sad people.

First time post for quite a few years. But I signed up very early on, 2001 I think. I remember the horror of trying to log on when the great hack occurred.

I was definitely a big reader rather than big hitter. But I still get the magazine and ride my bike. I remember a lot of the names being mentioned mostly with a smile.

Have fun all.
