He sent them to a friend (unsolicited "sort of" dick pick) who shared them with us. She was, I think, genuinely disturbed enough by the content of the picture to ask a couple of her friends (me and another guy) for advice about what to do about it.

When he (42) realised they had gained a wider audience than he'd intended, I think he just panicked and reacted badly (hence the fake letter)

I'm not trying to dwell on one (ex?)member but he was also just too bloody repetitive. Always the same subject matter, almost always the same arguments. TBH, I just got used to skipping his posts. I agree, and this combined with his argumentative hair-trigger and endlessly-picking-a-hill-to-die-on instinct made him an easy target. Again, sound like a certain countryman of yours?

when you repeatedly try to explain that something is black, (for the umpteenth time, regardless of how many times you've been shown that it's white) no matter how sincerely held your belief is, eventually people are going to laugh and point...He largely bought it upon himself, regardless of how "unfair" that was.

I didn't, because it was clear from what I read he wasn't trying to be that way. Just easy to interpret what he said that way, if someone wanted to do so.

I never posted in a single one of his posts in his defence, because it would have been like volunteering to be a fish put into a barrel at an NRA party.

As far as I saw not once did he try to offend, but on countless occasions had to defend.

I stopped posting for years because I got out of the habit - there was a phase of really obnoxious pop-up adverts (both legit and dodgy ones inserted by unscrupulous advertisers), some with auto playing audio/vids.

I’ve kept biking, albeit not as quite as often due to having a baby (who’s now nearly four and being taught to ride a bike).

I was highly amused to come back to see a post moaning about Planet X customer service, it was like I’d never left!

It was a real shame about Rachel, she was always great to talk to, always came across as a genuinely lovely person, and I did try to offer encouragement to her at that time, I was genuinely sad that she left. ☹️
I used to talk to Fred on Fb after he left here, but after I while I found him a bit... challenging I guess, and stopped the contact. Stopped looking at Fb not long after as well, tbh.

People who are racist, homophobic, misogyne, authoritarian, Tory, petrolhead or whatever often seem to lack the self-awareness that their views might offend and then get offended and passively aggressive (or just plain agressive) when they are called out. The earliest example I remember of geetee sticking his head above the parapet was on the 'Dave' thread.

Which is interesting to reread, because some of the comments directed at geetee there are pretty borderline today, which seems a bit ironic in terms of how his departure played out.

I sometimes wondered if the great hack was real or if STW just decided that it would be best to just get rid of all the embarrassing old threads and posts and start afresh (edit: the hack was perhaps real but why was there no backup? ). That’s the thing, some us are ‘wired’ different. Not everyone is neurotypical.

I appreciate Mark's reprieve and invite to discuss the issues, it's a gesture that is welcome and shows a willingness to listen and discuss. I like the community that has been fostered on this forum, I've learned everything from how to fit tubeless tyres to which security camera to get. I've met and had the most fun I've had on a bike with people who I've met through the STW forum. It's certainly something to be proud of... Now, I'm not going to get all emotional.
I have never spoken with an agenda, I'm a cyclist (you've made me admit it) and a parent and some threads touch a nerve, I speak from the heart, experience and knowledge. I am autistic and I do try to be courteous, but I can see how that can appear shibboleth or blunt. I am sorry for offending people with my manner, please feel free to check me if I get it wrong again; but I do hope that I don't.

That is absolutely not why she was banned and the decision has now been overturned as you can see. I would sincerely hope that anyone who's been here more than 30 seconds would not even remotely think that might be something that would ever happen.

Regardless of subject we are not in the business of censorship, sweeping difficult topics under the carpet rather discussing it openly and hopefully changing minds does no-one any favours.
