I loved it but......does everyone have to die?!?!?
Also- what's with the Darth Vader fat-neck??!? lol
Where's Wedge?
Two hours and not even a mention of him. How can you have a film called Rogue One without Rogue One? C'mon Disney. Or did they get him muddled up with the Captain of the TantiveIV?
Looking forward to seeing Peter Cushing again, do you thing they CGied his slippers?
The only bits I didn't like were the CGId Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher. It may have been an artifact of seeing it in 3d but they both looked quite jarringly CGI!!
I did really enjoy the film and thought the tone was very different to the episodic films, but as it said above, did everyone have to die!!!!!
At work about to teach a full day, working on about 2.5hrs sleep....today could be interesting!
loved it last night, good change in tone though, nice to see a bit more grit back in the films. I guess if everyone didn't get killed, it might make all that rebelling look a bit easy!
Peter Cushing looked ok in 2D, Carrie Fisher not so much...
That last scene with Darth Vader though.
What a scene! Properly unleashed doing dark side stuff! He was actually scary again!
Yes, leia was a bit too obviously computer generated. The scene would have been better just with a back view. Didn't need the lily gilded like that
loved it but......does everyone have to die?
That's the freedom that not having to leave the door open for a sequel gives you
True that. It's a shame though- I really liked the Jynn Erso character, I would have liked to have see her in another film or two! 🙂
I enjoyed it and really liked the tone. I found the 3D annoying, there seemed to be too many blurred layers. I also thought, in the beginning especially, it was too dark to see a crisp image. Anyone else, or was I unlucky?
Watched in 2d of course but great, kind of twigged it wasn't going to end happily and glad for it, somehow a ship swooping in would have ruined it.
Just back from seeing it, enjoyed the final battle and Vader's last scene.
Thought the big droid was a bit Lady Brien of Tarth in mannerisms.
Was the chap that Jynn bumps into in the street, the same as who Luke bumps into in the cantina in New Hope?
Was the chap that Jynn bumps into in the street, the same as who Luke bumps into in the cantina in New Hope?
Yes, I thought it was a deliberate reference..
Cool
It was superb.
Just back from seeing it, enjoyed the final battle and Vader's last scene.
Yep, want more of that! Now they have cracked the happy ending problem maybe it's time for a dark side film
Right. Saw it in IMAX. Loved it. Going to see it again. However, the trailers make me wonder what the pre rewrite ending would have been. The scenes with Jyn running on the beach with the plans is gone as is the one running in the Imperial base with the plans and K2SO. No Tie fighter confrontation either. I am now really keen to know what the pre reshoot film would have looked like. On the Imax, the cgi Leia and Tarkin worked brilliantly. Oh and no Krennic walking through the water nor the stormtroopers in the shallows.
Also, did I spot Boba Fett in the trees in the fan reel they released back in April?
I really hope there is an alternate edit or someone publishes it online!
There's been a reshoot?!?!?
Where's Wedge?
Two hours and not even a mention of him
He was mentioned on the tannoy when they were in Yavin control room.
Watched in 2d and thought it was bloody awesome. K2so reminded me of Stewie Griffin a bit.
I think about fifteen minutes from the end as the rebels were getting picked off and thinking about how this was going to tie in with A New Hope, it was looking like a suicide mission to me and I'm glad they went through with that ending. It was quite gritty and compelling viewing and laid off overly sentimental bollocks and childish humour, it may well be my favorite Star Wars.
Watched earlier today. Most enjoyable.
Saw it this afternoon. loved it. Nice link to the original Ep4. Loved the more evil Grand Moff Tarkin, he always seemed a bit light on his loafers in the original. Nice epic space fight scene at the end. And yes - everyone had to die. I think there was a reference int he original films about the cost involved in getting the plans (will have to re-watch maybe), but I always thought the the task of getting the plans was costly in terms of lives lost.
I wish they has spent more time with the battle on the disabled Rebel flagship about getting the plans onto the Leah's ship with more Vader kick ass action in lieu of alot of the stuff int he first half which I felt dragged on a little too much.
Lots of scenes in the trailers that were not in the main film which was a bit weird. I think I need to see it a couple more times to get the whole thing. What was all the faffing about with the pilot on the shuttle trying to hook up the shuttle to the network when the plans were transmitted via the big antenna?
Would have loved it if they had made it even darker. I know they've got to make the right classification so kids can see it, but a real dark version of the film would have been great.
Looking forward to seeing it again!

So he could radio those chaps outside the shield gate and tell em to break it open

that's the 2nd Death Star
Watched in 2D this morning (straight off nightshift) I though some Peter Cushing scenes looked OK, some he looked a little bit too big in the face, not as gaunt as he actually was. Still, I enjoyed the fact they did that though as I have avoided everything about it and had no idea they were doing it. Subsequently, Leia was less of a shock. I reckon just showing her from the back would've been a cop out, although again, I thought her face was a little bit too big. Could just be me, haha.
Favourite line was the robot saying to Jyn after she says the force field would destroy their ship and kill them all, "Not me, I'd be fine floating in space".
Will probably go again as the last 5 minutes was one of the best things ever. I nearly cheered when the little escape ship with Leia and the plans appeared. And of course Darth stood in the doorway with lightsabre at the ready.
Saw last night and loved it 😀
...however the only thing i will add is i really wanted to see the aftermath of the two colliding Star Destroys that then hit Scarifs deflector shield; would have looked awesome if one of those Star Destroys had then crashed to the surface
Gareth Edwards has gone out of his way to replicate the look of the original trilogy, like one of those dramas set in the 60/70s where they obsess over the detail. When they entered the building with the shiny floor I was thinking 'shoe box robot' and there it was! Blink and you'd miss it. A great fan film, very enjoyable.
OK just back from seeing it in 3d with 12 9year olds!!! So that may of been part of the reason I didn't think it was all that. It's OK but I much preferred The Force Awakens.I agree with others who said the 3d was not great.
Was Jeremy bulloch in there or did I imagine him?
The two jyn bumped into must have left just after that so as to not be killed. I guess they were just around the corner from Tatooine.
Enjoyed it a lot though.
Loved it. Very dark, very well done to kill off all the heroes was a brave move. Now intrigued by how much was reshot...
Saw it tonight, some great characters (noteably Chirrut and Baze), and subsequently a shame they all died...
Shermer, everyone dying was the right move. It also brought home the line "a lot of people died getting these plans" or something along those lines in ep 4
Does anyone know who the female Jedi was? Referred to as serving well in the past?
That was a reference to obi-wan, I thought they were discussing your jedi friend
Ah OK, my bad. Must have misheard. Thought they said "she" had served them well previously.
He was talking about Leia and Obi-wan together quickly. Using Leia to get the plans to Obi-wan.
My favourite aspect was they way they actually thought about making it tie in with ANH - the references to Obi-Wan, R2D2/C3PO, the use of the same Yavin base, some of the same X-Wing pilots and of course the ending.
Oh, apparently the "Captain Antilles" I heard in the film was a reference to this bloke, not Wedge.

Why does the main character speak Queen's English? Was it the prison camp?
Good film, but thought the cgi characters were awful, jarring and frankly embarrassing.
but thought the cgi characters were awful, jarring and frankly embarrassing.
I didn't even notice them!
They couldn't have been that bad, we wondered if it was cgi or a lookalike for a moment.
Really? That honestly surprises me. I felt they looked completely artificial and out of place.
I didn't mind the CGI characters, looked a bit off to begin with, but got used to Peter Cushing, and forgot about it after a couple of shots, the Carrie Fisher one was less good though.
Thought it was a pretty good stab really, liked the way it slotted very well into Ep4, it's as if they had that final scene planned and built the movie around it. The 'Nam shtick with the rebel troops felt a bit forced, the AT-AT were epic, loads of scenes missing from the teaser trailer. K2SO was a bit "Marvin"
Most of the rebels are British because the Americans didn't join in until the war had been going for a few years.
🙂
Saw it yesterday and agree it is up there with the best Star Wars has to offer. It's almost like they thought of the story before they started shooting.
K2SO was a bit "Marvin"
And all the better for it, the childish chirpiness of the droids has gone way over the top in the past.
Didn't mind the CGI Peter Cushing, my first thought was that it was a look-a-like, but Leia looked a bit bloaty.
Matt
So why did the rebels not use X-Wings against AT-ATs on Hoth?
And who were the rebel pilots referenced from Episode 4? - was hoping to see Biggs Darklighter but do not think that I did?
Just back from seeing it in 3D. Wished I'd seen the 2D version - far too blurry..
Also I found it quite boring. Not enough Jedi action.
Not enough Jedi action.
Very litte. In fact, there are no Jedis in it lol 🙂
thatscold - MemberAlso I found it quite boring. Not enough Jedi action.
That would be because apart from Obi-wan in hiding, and Darth Vader, they're all supposed to be dead.
Bensales, which worries me with where Star Wars Rebels is heading... It's great having an 8year old mini me to watch the cartoons with 😉
And don't forget Yoda...
Saw it at the BFI Imax this morning. I thought it was awesome.
I did have a couple of moments where the CGI was a bit ropey, but not enough to put me off.
The dark scenes at the beginning are Gareth Edwards' style. Apparently the "assistant" director was responsible for the more "franchise-ey" bits.
Despite the obvious style differences, it didn't take away from my enjoyment.
And who were the rebel pilots referenced from Episode 4? - was hoping to see Biggs Darklighter but do not think that I did?
From io9.com: There are quite a few familiar faces in Rogue One, but one of our favorite callouts was the use of original footage from A New Hope’s Battle of Yavin sequence to resurrect Garven Dreis and Jon Vander, the Red and Gold Leader of their respective X-Wing and Y-Wing squadrons in the Alliance. The two men may have lived to fight another day at Scarif, but would ultimately perish in the Battle of Yavin.
Leia wasn't CGI. An actress named Ingvild Deila.
Edit. A further google search indicates a mix of CGI and live action.

K2so reminded me of Stewie Griffin a bit.
This.
Commented the exact same thing to the friends I watched it with.
My mate loved the film. His wife slept through it. I'm hopefully seeing it later this week.

Yeah, they basically added the dead eyes and weird glow over the top.
TBH the things that threw me a bit were the direct links into ep 4. It's in keeping with the crawl but not the feel- nothing about the rebels really feels like they're running from a bruising space battle, everyone seems a bit too chilled on the death star too... "Soon we will have the plans" "Shouldn't you get after her then?" "Er, yeah, OK". "We're a consular ship" "**** off, I literally saw you fly out of a rebel ship a minute ago" "Oh yeah"
Well I thought it was the best yet by a country mile. Now if they could remake Star Wars ep4 in the same style.......
The rebel fleet coming out of hyper space above the gate was excellent, in fact the whole battle was excellent.
Echos of Empire Strikes Back in the desperate feel.
Saw it in wide screen, 3D, start was a bit blurry at times but got used to it. Looking forward to seeing it at home in 2D.
Just back from the IMAX,
It was EPIC!
Lots of Easter eggs in their.
I meant to say... I loved the outright "the rebellion are terrorists" bleakness of it, one of the big reviews called it moral ambiguity but it's not ambiguous at all, the first time you see one of the heroes he murders one of his informants, and it's all the way up the high command- because that's just what they have to do. That's pretty bloody bleak for a star wars film, but it's totally in keeping with the corroded feel of the whole universe.
And I loved that feeling in Jyn's volunteer suicide squad, like they're the necessary but not respected evil that see the rebellion's going hot and very soon either everyone'll be dead, or there'll be a big ceremony when everyone else gets given medals or inexplicable glowing things while they get edited out of the wiki entry as an awkward truth...
(which ironically reminds me a lot of Ghost Dog- that feeling of people hard people realising their time has past. Wish we'd had more of mental space amin robot legs ghost dog tbh)
Saw this Saturday night at a local IMAX cinema, thoroughly enjoyed it, possibly up there after Empire and maybe slightly ahead of A New Hope.
I think they did a good job of giving us something new but including enough references to ensure that you knew it was part of the Star Wars cannon.
CGI Tarkin and Leia wasn't an issue to me either but the most jarring bit I found was Vadars Schwarzeneggers throw away choking line, bit strange really.
Highlights, Vadar and a corridor full of rebels, seeing some in-house Empire politics (bit like real work) and the space battle above Scarif.
Good rollicking fun.
Saw it last night in 2D with my eldest daughter, will admit to being slightly shocked that they all died - was expecting right until the end they'd get the girl off the planet... Good ending though, and I loved seeing Vader fight.
I didn't mind the CGI characters, looked a bit off to begin with, but got used to Peter Cushing, and forgot about it after a couple of shots, the Carrie Fisher one was less good though.
FWIW my eldest daughter didn't know that Peter Cushing was dead, and never noticed it was CGI until I told her afterwards. Leia did look a bit fake though.
DID they all die though?
I know it's inferred, but not explicit in 2d anyway?
This is just half-assed wonderings but there was a lot of reshooting and the shape of the ending definitely changed- there's unused footage of them running across the beach with the death star plans so the whole "beam it away" thing is an addition. So that made me wonder about CGI Leia, it's so obviously a worse job than Peter Cushing and very short (the "avoid the face" tricks weren't subtle), maybe that was a late addition?
(though, it seems like I've just arbitrarily decided that all the bits that jarred were in the reshoots, maybe that's just me being a fanboi and making excuses...)
Amazing movie, absolutely loved it. The dark begining was great, the battles breathtaking in 3d, and the ending wonderful. Wow, just wow!
Anyone else think Tarkin becomes Snoke?
implied heavily by the death star shooting the planet, that and all the rebels running away. I think we can write them off as they don't need to feature anywhere else.I know it's inferred, but not explicit in 2d anyway?
Saw it last night, it was okay. The first half needed a good twenty minutes editing out; the whole Forest Whittaker bit was pretty superfluous.
Amazing film, loved it.
My random continuity question is thus: why in episode 4 do they have the line "the Empire doesn't consider small, one man fighters to be a threat, or they'd have tighter defences" when they know full well that the vulnerability was deliberately designed into the system?
when they know full well that the vulnerability was deliberately designed into the system?
do they though? I might need to watch it again but I thought that the exhaust port flaw was a secret, passed to Jinn via her father's holographic message.
they analysed the plans and found the flaw - the empire diddnt find it ?
Just saw it.
Good not great for me. Until they get to Scarif it was a bit meh. Too much "hey here's another planet, look how great our CGI is"
Scarif scenes made up for it though. Donnie Yen was the standout throughout. The CGI Tarkin and Leia were pretty ropey. CGI faces always look too shiny
7/10
In the original Ep 4, the exhaust port flaw wasn't really explained, just that the empire didn't consider it vulnerable.
The ret-con in Rogue One is the Galen Erso deliberately introduced it, leaked the information via message that then only Jyn saw. When she did the hero's exposition bit to Director Jannick saying she knew about the flaw, the implication is they all wound up dead before he could inform the Deathstar about it.

Because the Empire don't know it's there.
(ironically because Tarkin, being a mega-****, decided to blow up the entire installation with the Death Star rather than kill or capture a couple of dozen rebels then find out exactly what they were there for. "What tape were they looking at? Let's examine that part and find out what... Oh, I blew it up? Dang. <shoots everyone present>")
IHN - MemberSaw it last night, it was okay. The first half needed a good twenty minutes editing out; the whole Forest Whittaker bit was pretty superfluous.
I think his part got pretty extensively chopped about tbh, he had lines removed but also it seems like the change in Jyn's story also reduced his part.
Booked tickets to see it tonight. How chuffing much? £23.48 for two, in 2D, non-executive seating!
It had better be bloody good.
Why does the main character speak Queen's English?
She went to private school in Birmingham
@ Makkag, Northwind
No what I mean is at the Rebel Mission Briefing in IV they make a big thing of saying the "Empire doesn't consider small one-man fighters to be a threat". It makes it sound like they discovered the vulnerability accidentally.
What they could have said is "one of our guys designed this thing and deliberately put a vulnerability into it that can be exploited by an X-wing". The whole surviving Rebel Council knows this information because Jinn told them all.
