From the leaked images I've seen, it appears that the new... "outfit" is the wrong term but lets roll with it, the new outfit is a new version of the old one. Ie, the original look is in the movie too, and they redesign it within the plot.

Which, makes me happy. I'm not daft enough to dismiss it as a "ruined classic" until I've actually watched the film.

I'm not expecting anyone to match Kurtwood Smiths performance. He made the movie for me. I'll just take the new one for what it is and try to enjoy it as a stand alone movie. At least, if it's engaging, it'll enable the comparisons to wait until later.

Too right. Why remake a classic.

Without this, it's nothing

PS. Robocop was one of the rare films I went to the cinema twice to see.

I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised...

My money is on nobody being pleasently surprised, and it being as utterly gash as the trailer suggests. A complete travesty of pointless CGI nonsense, that surgically removes everything that was best about the original

I hope they follow the Verhoeven back catalog and remake Showgirls, with extra CGI.
This one stinks of mediocre unfortunately, the original, though not perfect, was at least original!

Hey. You saw some of the first one and you didn't like it. There's no reason to subject yourself needlessly to the remake. We all have different likes and dislikes. Fair comment.

The first film is a classic..

When I first heard about the re-make, especially a pg-13 remake I was very skeptical, however.. having watched the trailer it looks fun.. I can't see it having the satire of the original, however the director has done a couple of good films - so I'm going in open minded...

Certainly the pg13 classification for the remake is troubling. Clarence's use of profanity in every possible situation in the original was what made the dialog so entertaining and in a weird way more believable.
On another note...
What about the remake of Total Recall? Personally, I hated it. I'd have preferred, and possibly even liked it a tiny bit if they'd called it something like Déjà Vu. It was borderline insulting due to the fact they tried to act in it. Come on. Don't try to upstage Arnie. It's a fight you'll lose.

The Total Recall remake had Kate Beckinsale in ossum body mode so it wins.

Not for me, I avoided the Aliens thing, Total Recall and will avoid this too. It'll just be like a i-robot/look at me dropping references in to the old robocop. Abit like a tribute band. No ta.

I'm kinda looking forward to 300 Pt Deux but not holding up much hope.

Please make a Dredd II 🙁

Or "ladies leave" in the 'edited for TV version' I remember watching when I was a kid. I always remember thinking Clarence Boddicker was very polite for a psychopathic cop killer.

Some reviews on Rottentomatoes (53%):

If you find yourself - perhaps under duress - watching José Padilha's Robocop, rest easy in the knowledge that under no circumstances will you end up watching it again.

... a soulless metallic carcass designed by committee to amplify external gloss and maximise commercial profit.

I might have a film-night where we watch the original.

See that slipped into the "so bad it's good" category for me.

The sequence with them shooting down Reaper drones while parachuting a tank out of an exploding Hercules is stupidly brilliant. 😀

And Empire hated it.

Just read Total Film's review and interview with the director. He sounds like he took it seriously at least.

The approach to this remake is very different. Where as the original is a very dark satire whereby a man faces an incredibly painful and disturbing conflict with his existence as a machine and all the losses that come with it the remake brushes over it completely, well it tackles it a little bit but more in a 'Woah, what happened to my super fit Hollywood bod?! Whoah, i'm like totally bullet proof now dude, this is frickin' cool!' sort of way.

It's a completely different animal, which is fine, I wouldn't want a pointless carbon copy. It's just a pity that on its own, it's a really bad film.

In the same way that Starship Troopers is a satire.

By being satirical.

Serious - comments a lot on - privatisation, globalisation, commercialism (specifically the viewing of people as mere assets by big business), the soulless, vacuous (sp?) nature of modern life, etc.

It wasn't, people have tried to lay stories and meaning over the top of the shoot em up cliched 80's action plot. It was just bog standard big budget 80's entertainment, nothing more.

It isn't satire there is some heavy handed morality message thrown in badly, just like the "what did we learn" bit at the end of 80's cartoons.

Just like Total Recall and Starship Troopers, Robocop is thoroughly satirical and has political points to make. Verhoevens best works. And then came Showgirls....

I've not seen a remake of a film that has been any good. I watched Robocop on the plane yesterday. I still haven't seen a decent remake. If there were no other half decent films on the IFE to watch instead I would have turned off halfway through.

The Coen Brothers' True Grit was better than the original in my opinion. I never really understood why anyone thought that John Wayne was a good actor.

Which King Kong remake? I liked the '80's one with Jeff Bridges, but wasn't keen on the Peter Jackson one.

Completely different movies. I think acting was different back then. Actors tended to be more dramatic and over acting was the norm. Modern actors try to deliver dialog in a more realistic fashion. Wayne was a great actor for his time.
