Thinking about one for the downstairs open plan room. It’s Amazon prime day. We have a convenient corner for it to nest in.

What’s not to like (Amazon vendor distribution mode apart)

Unless I'm mistaken that none doesn't empty itself....I think you need the 7 series for that.  I think you'll be emptying it a lot (the on-board bin is v small)

I like mine for just keeping on top of daily dust and dog hair, but still need to do a proper vacuum now and again, the roomba doesn't do a good job on rug/hard floor junction.

i like the idea of these but with a lot of transitions between hard floors and thick carpet i can just see it getting stuck everywhere.

Roombas may be the original but they’re not the best, plus I think they cut out a lot of features from the cheaper models.

Bought a Roborock s5 a long while ago now and am still impressed with it. At the time it was more fully featured and cheaper than the Roomba ones. You can also free it from the cloud with minimal messing about.

I think Amazon are trying to buy iRobot, so be prepared for them to be spamming you with savings/"savings"

Re. Prime day “deals” remember you can check historical pricing via the camels website… OP vacuum went up £100 at the start of the month in preparation 😀 and was much cheaper over Christmas…

I think the actual Amazon branded stuff has genuine reductions (tablets, etc) other stuff not so much maybe

I've got one of those eufy ones off amazon, had it a good while, it was used a lot at first downstairs, had the usual issues being getting stuck on the rug and cables, unable to find it's way home so eventually would run out of battery.
Then we got a dog and found that it completely fills it's self up with fur (labrador who sheds a lot despite normal hoovering twice a day) but still tries to go about its cleaning duties, also had issues with the batteries, when docked but not plugged in if the batteries die it usually KO's them. Gone through 3 replacement batteries with it.

Last I seen or heard from it was when I was out shopping last year and got a notification on my phone with something along the lines of "help me, I'm stuck!", pretty sure it got caught on one of the dogs rope toys that had found it's self underneath the sofa, just took a look there whilst WFH and it's not there anymore and not on it's dock so no idea what Mrs Pizza has done with it. We ended up buying one of those battery powered shark hoovers last year and to be honest it's quicker to just whip around with that in 10 minutes than it is to have the robovac mooching about making a racket bumping into things and getting stuck for 45 minutes, only to find it's missed whole sections of flooring and having to hoover manually anyway.

If you splash out for one of the ones that can self empty and has mapping capabilities then go for it, otherwise it will be novelty for a while and then never get used.

Getting a robovac without mapping is like buying a car with no steering wheel 😂

I have only ever seen one in use(less). It got stuck everywhere, seemed to throw stuff around more than sweep it up and was generally rubbish. I'd take some convincing they are any good.

i've just popped an order in for the "360 Botslab S8 + Robot Vacuum Cleaner with Mop, with 4L Large Self Empty Station, 2700Pa Suction, LiDAR Navigation, Carpet Detection, Multi Floor Mapping, Personalized Cleaning, 300ml Water Tank"..

we've a large open plan kitchen diner that just attracts dust and shite, and i'm fed up of hhaving to brush and mop it daily!

The reviews on this one seem good, and ideally i'll set it off daily once we're all out the house...

Will feed back!

We have a Eufy basic one. No mapping, just bounces around with sensors and bumper. When it works it does a good job. Not the most efficient but it gets there eventually. But it's very needy. By the time I've cleared everything off the floor that it would eat and get tangled in I could have just hoovered manually. It constantly gets stuck "on a cliff" (it's also dramatic), gets stuff tangled in the side brushes, get stuck in places it has no right in being in the first place. It can get under the dining table no problem but can't get out again because the sensors won't let it under the chairs between the legs. It has an edge of room mode which is good as it goes around the perimiter, but it won't recognise and do the same with the kitchen island.

TLDR: If you're going to get one, get a smart one with mapping. The non-mapping ones are dumb and needy.

i have a dumb robo lawnmower - it doesnt have many obstacles - i have to remove it from the hedge or from under a car at least once a week(if it goes in forwards it bounces off - if it turns too close to the car the emergency stop button is pressed by the sill ! ) .... still less hassle than cutting the grass after the kids have gone to bed....

theres no way i would entertain a robohoover without LIDAR

I was looking at the ecovacs Deebot N10 and the lubluelu what ever -0 both had decent reviews but no docks

The one DRp has linked to looks good

Bought a Lubluelu SL60D a few weeks ago on a separate promotion. It's down to £150 (£70 voucher at checkout), along with the self-emptying bin.

Pros:
- my house is a lot dirtier than I thought it was. The hard floors are spotless and the amount of pet hair it's extracted from the carpets is both incredible and revolting. It sucks, but in a good way.
- the LIDAR mapping is remarkable compared to the older robot vacuums. Picture-perfect map of the house and it does a neat job of mowing each room in straight lines. If you rearrange the room it doesn't cause any problems.
- you can add exclusion zones just by drawing them on the room map, and they actually work.
- battery life is excellent
- mopping is effective
- it can find its way back to the charger or dustbin.
- the self-empty bin has a big bag in it and a powerful vacuum
- can't do stairs in the event of inevitable robot uprising.

Cons:
- you have to manually load in each map if you change floor (eg from ground floor to landing).
- you need to put the self-empty bin where you think it gets the most use, or do some manual emptying or ferry things around.
- it sometimes struggles to dock when on carpet, but is fine on hard floors
- it doesn't have a sensor to say the bin is full, so it'll keep vacuuming instead of going off to empty. This may be the state of my carpet though.
- it may be providing the Chinese military with an inch-perfect map of the inside of my house.
- can't do stairs.

Considering that it's 25% of the price of the competition, I'm happy with it.

it does look pretty good but unless tech has moved on massively in the last year or so the market now seems flooded with hi-spec robots which are very cheap from companies I've never heard of, so a bit of an unknown quantity long-term! Might be worth a punt though, who knows 🤷‍♂️

I wouldn't necessarily discount one without a bin-dock, got my robo before they were a thing and although yes you have to empty it every time really it takes 10 seconds if it lives near or next to the bin! Although my next one will have one I'd rather a solid hoover without than a sub-par one with.

A decent app is worth a lot, especially one that can be activated via shortcuts etc. Mine has specific routines to come and clear any crumbs up around the dinner table or to come & tidy up after I've trimmed my beard 😂

Don't expect to be blown away by the mopping on cheaper robots, only the top-end ones with oscillating mops do a really effective job IMO. You have to be on top of swapping/cleaning the mops also as they get manky v quickly & you end up just smearing water around your floor with a gross dirty cloth 😂 I disabled the mop on mine fairly quickly!

I bought a Neato BotVac Connected back in 2017, and haven't hoovered a floor since.  £600 IIRC, but it's been great.

Over the years I added a second one so I could have one on each floor.  That was also a Neato, and in theory newer and better. But turns out their quality actually went downhill.  At least it was cheaper, £300.

Recently we got a new sofa that's only 6cm off the floor, so I did some searching and found a 58mm high option, only available in China.  Cheap though, £200 including import, took about a month to arrive:

https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005004247900590.htm

It got caught once so I added a couple of penny washers under each sofa foot.  It's a bit weak compared to the Neatos, but all of our floors downstairs are hard, so that's ok.

So have three in circulation.  Wouldn't go back, worth every penny.  £1100 and now we have three floors of coverage (two in the house, one in our office) and I've not used a hoover in 6 years.

Happy to say in all 3 instances I've managed to stash the base against a wall under a chest of drawers, so I don't have to look at them when they're not in use.

It'd be nice if they were self-emptying, but they didn't use to exist, and they'd be much harder to hide.

I don't have them set on a schedule, just press the button to set them going whenever's convenient. Typically every morning downstairs, every few days upstairs and once a week in the office.

Similarly quite impressed with the Lubluelu Sl60D although I think either get it with the self emptying bin or get the additional non-water tank dustbox as the default water-mopping-up capable tank has a really small capacity for normal dry hoovering dust.

Bonus points for switching the language in the app to something your other half can't understand 🙂

How do they cope with ground in play-doh, miniature dinosaurs and Lego? Asking for a friend.

This thread has good timing. Just got off the phone with my parents who have asked me to research into robot vacuum cleaners for them.

They are happy to spend decent money buying a good quality one

Is Roborock of of the best brands for this then? Any other brands I should be looking at?

Two people separately, and very passionately, recommended Eufy to me. I ended up getting one  (X8 model, £279 at Amazon, but Costco was cheaper when I bought). I've been very impressed. I don't recognise a lot of the criticism above, but guess that's because it's a high end lidar mapping model rather than a dumber one.

We've got a Eufy X8, it replaced a dumb one and it makes a massive difference having one that can map out the rooms and find its way around, it cleans in a fraction of the time (rather than randomly bouncing around) and we can exclude areas like the rat's nest of cables under a cabinet.

You do need to go around picking up the toys, bits of lego, etc but I tend to clear a room, send it off to do that bit while I sort the rest.

Ours has the mop attachment but tbh it's not worth having, effectively it's lightly dragging a damp cloth around. I just let it hoover so I can run around quickly with a mop after. I don't see huge value in the self-emptying, you still need to empty the base just a bit less often and you can't hide it away under a sofa or cabinet so easily.

Had a quick look at what's on amazon's sale today and I'd pick the X8 again, just without the mop.

tbh it's been a while since I've looked into it in detail, as I mentioned the market is flooded with brands now, but it does seem that Roborock still lead the way - certainly in price!

They appear to have a UK distributor now unlike when I bought mine although they are more expensive than sourcing it from China yourself or via a 3rd party but presumably you'd also get a decent warranty?

Would probably get a Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra if I won the lottery, really good oscillating mop that is self cleaning & can refill itself (don't think many if any others do that!) plus AI camera system for obstacle avoidance including dog poo etc!!

Not really sure about other brands tbh, I think there are lot of good options probably, just make sure it has the features you want.

We pulled the trigger on The botslab S8 plus - the self emptying dock swayed me over the other options.

It cruised around the house. Mapping last night. The lidar works really well avoiding most of the common complaints of this thread of banging into things and getting stuck. - there was none of that.

The floors cleaned well and it coped with everything except. The fireplace. I had to set an exclusion zone in the app once it was mapped as the hearth was too low for the lidar to pick up it as a step.

The multilevel cleaning appears to be a boon. Our downstairs is split on three levels and while the first time. Is a faff you have to move the base as it only. Maps dock to dock. Subsequent times you just dump the hoover in the area and it works out which map it's in.

For now the toddler is running round cleaning up her toys when ever she hears it going as she thinks it'll hoover them up so its a two fold win for this week. That'll soon wear off

I've got 2, one upstairs and 1 down.  Both are Ecovacs ozmo series, and frankly it's the one purchase that has no questions should they eventually breakdown.

The one downstairs has now covered the equivalent over 130k m2 since we've had it, it's covering 150m2 most days mostly tile but also some carpet it gets cleaned out every 3-4 days, the running hours timer stopped counting at 999hrs 😅

I'd say its better than the proper Hoover's!

@trail_rat

it's a good one isn't it!

I'm obsessed with watching it create the layout of a room at first, with random pathways etc... then the subsequent times it cleans the floor it's like a beautiful dance... around the perimeter...then up and down in perfect lines!! so smart!

I've just got the Notification that "cleaning has started" as i've scheduled it for 0830 daily... shame i won't be there to hear it merrily chirp "cleaning makes me happy"!!!!

Our house is over about 5 different levels..some with proper staircases, some with a few steps, so it's annoying it can't really have free run of the place. Unless I build some ramps...hmm....!
