You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've not seen anything on here about this so apologies if already covered, but the TV's on in the background on BBC Breakfast and I overheard this article about Kevin Sinfield running 7 marathons in 7 days for his old friend and number 7 Rob Burrow who has MND.
I know this year's hard for many but there are few fans of run and wriggle among the posh rugby lads on here, so thought I'd post it up.

Nicely done theotherjonv
Thought about mentioning it on here, but didn't know how many Rugby League type people were on here since Ton disappeared. Rob Burrow story is absolutely heart breaking. Sinfield is awesome.
Both should be shoe-ins for SPOTY!
And, a bit more 'bike', Oggy Holmes doing his own bit from the Cas lads...

Awesome work from Sinfield, he looks like a good runner actually, the times he's putting in a very impressive.
The cause is brilliant too, and over £1m which is awesome.
Amazing effort by Kevin Sinfield who has been supported on some of his runs by other Rhinos legends such as JJB and Jamie Peacock. I've had the pleasure of seeing Rob Burrow destroy defences on numerous occasions including the 2017 Grand Final which was one of the last times the remaining members of the Golden Generation played together.
The appeal has raised over £2 million at the last count. I'm wondering if there is any correlation between the onset of MND and the frequent head impacts in both codes of rugby - Burrow, Doddie Weir, Van der Westhuizen, Adam Maher, Stephen Darby. Interesting in today's news that a number of former rugby internationals are suffering from early onset dementia - Alix Popham, Steve Thompson - in their early 40s.
Slightly biased with my username, also watched Rob and Sir Kev and co run rings around teams, many, many years of enjoyment,Great lads on and off the field, and a true friendship,
A chunk of my families pressie money has been donated( with their knowledge) Fantastic effort and fantastic amount raised.
And great efforts from the larger RL family.Even given a bob or two to the Cas lads, had to lived in Vegas for 30 years

Absolutely I reckon. And heading footballs - look at how many of the 66 squad/era have got dementia. There's also the possibility of steroid/heavy supplement use that we just don't know the long term effects of.
Anyway, that's a different thread! I've been blubbing like a baby watching the very obvious friendship Kevin and Rob have, absolutely heart breaking. Much respect for all involved 🙂
Warriors fan here.
Full of admiration for Kev, fantastic gesture and very impressive sporting achievement. Checked his times for all runs and the consistency is pretty amazing. Met him a couple of times on the touchline of junior grassroots rugby and a very nice chap to boot. Watching Rob in his heyday was half pleasure due to his skills and half torture as his skills were deployed against us. A truly great player especially given his size.
Re the early onset dementia / rugby argument. I think that there is more risk in union due to the nature of scrummaging etc. Definitely needs some serious research.

Initial research looks grim. Pre action letters being sent in a trial case against the RFU and others was in the news yesterday. Could totally change the game from a safety point of view, which is a good thing, though not sure expensive legal cases are the best way to go about it
Another Warriors fan here.
Huge respect for Rob Burrow, absolute legend of the game, every time I saw him play I just couldn't believe how good he was, how brave he was, how much he must have put in to get to be the player he was.
Sinfield is an absolute class act, both on the field and off it.
Not sure if the mechanisms that cause MND can be triggered by head injuries, or whether this is simply coincidence. RL players are theoretically, much less inclined to receive head injuries (repeated) other than the odd high shot here and there - maybe not so much at grass roots level though.
Aye, I'll admit I know bugger all about RL, other than memories of watching Ellery Hanley and Chariots Offiah in the 90s on grandstand, but these two guys are phenomenal, an absolute credit.
Agree re head knocks, this is gonna have massive changes to football and RU, and rightly so.
Sam Burgess lost his Dad to MND when he was a teenager. He's not high profile like Burrow or Doddy Weir but cases of MND in ex-pro/elite athletes are known. Is there a link? Well probably but nothing concrete as yet.
MND is horrific, you basically go from normal to a coffin within 3-5 years via a torturous path. It's a bit like pancreatic cancer in that we remain ever hopeful that something can be done and the fund raising is really helpful. 🤞
Broncos fan here 🙁
Sinfield is an absolute machine, and the whole team mate aspect to this really makes me glad to be a former player and now fan.
Burrow was such a great player (as were most of that Rhinos team) and watching him get worse is heart breaking. Kev getting cut up when discussing why he's doing it just shows how much of a bond they have.
Massive kudos to the whole of the sport for getting behind the efforts to help MND research.
Hopefully they can all work together to understand head traumas and work towards making both codes safer for all concerned.
It’s brilliant he’s doing this and my heart goes out to all those affected.
But please can we not speculate that MND is just another product of sports head injuries or lump it in with dementia. It’s not helpful. It’s a grim grim illness and a real Cinderella illness as it gets little research and no one really knows what causes it. It affects people of all ages and all backgrounds/lifestyles. Some folk get years some very little time. Some never even get their proper diagnosis before they’re gone. They can’t rule out it can be inherited which is also sobering.
I know there are many grim illnesses that get us in the end but please have a read up on MND and please give a bit if you can.
Before posting I did a quick search and this thread came up, so thought I'd post the Guardian interview here.

I'm going to have to read that later, the first few paragraphs had me choking up
Yeah it’s a tough read, very very humbling to think of the whole Burrow and Rhinos family.
A beautiful and humbling article - he has declined quickly and it's so sad to hear he can no longer speak and relies on a computer but maintains such a positive outlook. So difficult for his wife being a full time carer for him and also having 3 young children as well. As a Rhinos fan I have had the privilege of seeing him bamboozle players twice his size on many occasions including some of the Rhino's biggest wins. He is a legend of Leeds Rhinos and Rugby League and it's so sad to see him where he is now 😥
