Apparently with speed limits at 50mph in roadworks drivers are bothered by HGVs tailgating them (quite a reasonable thing to be concerned about).
So instead of fixing the problem they're avoiding it by increasing the speed limit. So now you've got narrow lanes but cars moving 20% faster and now changing lanes more frequently to overtake.
Why not just enforce the law and have stiffer penalties for drivers who use their vehicles to bully other people? It may be appropriate to increase the speed limit in roadworks, but doing it to paper over the cracks of shit driving from lorry drivers is simply moronic.

Wah wah "war on the motorist"...
It might just be safer to allow the traffic to flow faster, rather than having loads of heavy, bunched-up, tailgating traffic.
Agree, though, about policing the tailgating HGVs, but I suspect there isn't the manpower to do this.
But trials carried out by Highways England found drivers' heart rates were lower when they drove at 55mph (88km/h) and 60mph (96km/h) through roadworks.
So as long as drivers feel nice and relaxed, all is good?
I don't see how that corresponds with the safety needs of the workforce.
And given that a lot of trucks I pass seem to be limited to 55, but manage an indicated 60 or 65, I'm not sure either of those limits would stop them tailgating.
Looking forward to busy truckers tailgating me at 60-65 8)

The roadworks on the M60 that have been in place since about 1867 have average speed camera's on their whole length. I'm presuming that could be classified as enforcing the law, no?
The only thing it seems to achieve is to make most peoples already shocking lane discipline even worse. The middle lane club know think they can just sit at 50mph in any randomly selected lane

I think they're placebo cameras judging from the speed of some people that drive down the M60. And no, I don't believe average speed cameras count as enforcing the law at all.

I doubt it,the majority are screwed down to 52 or 56 MPH.
Are you sure your'e actually doing 60-65 or is that what your non calibrated speedo says your doing? 😆
Unless they're going downhill..I doubt it,the majority are screwed down to 52 or 56 MPH.
Unless they're going downhill.
True,true..
But tailgating is very dangerous though.
Anyone who has seen the film Duel will appreciate the catastrophic consequences of messing with an irate trucker.
tailgating?
did 50 bang on (on the GPS) in the 50 zone with average speed cameras on whatever motorway it is near Manchester with all the roadworks (M60?).
truck drivers and reps all just came steaming past.
does my GPS and do Europcar cars have a different MPH scale compared to everyone that relies on a licence for their job? or are they just immune to speed limit laws?
M6/M74 outside the 50 zone roadworks... clearly 70 on the GPS + 10% is meaninglesss too. Thought I was on the autobahn for a bit.
I like the US idea... fines double in construction zones.

or
Unless they piss around with the tacho or the trucks are not UK registered..
I’d be happy for the new rules, truckers couldn’t care less about other road users.. normally they’re watching porn on thier iPads whilst driving anyway.
Quite why we can’t have an instant ban for tailgating is beyond normal comprehension, it’s threatening and offensive and should be dealt with accordingly. It’s not like there aren’t enough cameras on motorways these days to catch them either.
I was intrigued that none of the reports I've seen have talked about the safety of the workforce.
Though, to be fair, when did you last see someone working in the roadworks?
It isnt just lorry drivers. I had some stupid cow literally 2m off the bumper in her shitty saab today in the 50mph roadworks near donnington park. I'd just been on a track experience and was more than revved up. But **** her I made her wait, I even slowed down a bit. Always amazes me how people get away with speeding!!!

The commissioning authority needs to do a risk assessment for the works. What happened in the LA that I worked for was that (after a workman was killed) they decided that the danger was too great so instead of speed limits they just shut the road/lane whilst the works were carried out...
