I'm with autoaid. £40 (ish) a year for home start and recovery. What happens is you call them, they authorise the work, you pay and claim it back.

All that said, I've not had to call them out..

greenflag have been best value for me when looking for euro cover as well as GB. And they did sort me out (no quibble, but a bit of arsing about between agents/brokers/car hire cos etc) with a hire car in France for 10 days when the T4 cracked it's head.

AA and RAC take the piss with renewal prices. They just want to catch out the lazy/blasé. Nasty business style, so we no longer use them for anything.

Think ours is inclusive (not free) with NFU motor insurance.
Maybe not the cheapest insurance deal (though its pretty good at c. £250 pa) - but they have a local office you can walk into to, were superb at sorting cover notes when I bought the last car, and generally real persons not a call centre that charge you for each little admin task (hello M&S).

I just had a piss take renewal from Greenflag - eye watering and they don't show the actual renewal date on the letter.
I had another vehicle on Rescuemycar.com which is an interesting payment / business model.

RAC take the piss every year, we find phoning up to cancel causes them to "find" a deal that is much more competitive!

It's an annual event in our house. Next month, I think....

Autoaid here, £40ish, bonus there is no extra charge for the wife. I have called recovery out using their direct helpline everything worked, dare I say quicker than when I was with the AA. Got sick of the yearly AA pisstake. You have to have means to pay the recovery agent, but I was paid back promptly.

I had renewal from AA, £190, called them up and said Im leaving, they dropped it down to £156.

Thats for roadside & relay for 2 plus key insurance etc, not bad.

+1 for this - never paid a bean for RAC cover for about ten years 'cause of Tesco points.

Another for auto aid....

It is a pay and claim system but if you were to give them a call and say at the moment I don't have means to pay with me, they'd authorise work and call out a place they deal with direct at no cost to you.....

So technically just like the AA!

Another one for Auto Aid, used them to shunt the car from work 40 miles to Glasgow for a new alternator, wouldn't bother with anyone else now.

I've used First Call fpr several years and have needed to call them out several times. They were quick to answer the phone and a truck was generally with me within the hour. Can't understand why anyone would pay £100+ for AA / RAC when First Call is only £42.50 including home start.
They just use a network of independent breakdown companies so have no added value extras which may not suit everyone's needs.
Don't be put off by the awful website http://www.firstcallmotorbreakdown.co.uk/uk-breakdown-cover/p1/

We're with Start - only used them once but they responded as expected that time. They were cheapest at the time of my last renewal - checked via moneysupermarket IIRC.

AutoAid here too. Have used them several times and each time they've been quicker and more helpful than AA/RAC, even in rural areas.

AA here have so far gone through the annual price hike negotiation with success but actually had to use them this year so will have lost one of the cards I play next round . They are really only bothered about new business and their service is no better than any other so it is best to swop if they wont give a loyal customer the same deal as a new one .

I certainly won't be renewing with RAC (car wouldn't start at around midnight, took them until 3:30am to arrive at which point he just confirmed what I'd said on the phone that the starter motor was dead (had already unsuccessfully tried jumping it myself)). He only had a van so when I asked him about towing he just said I better call the RAC back, would be a few more hours wait for a tow truck. He was obviously just sub-contracted (no livery etc. relating to RAC anywhere) so may as well use a cheaper service like the ones mentioned above that just contact local garages.

I joined the AA in 1987. This year I finally pulled the plug and went to AutoAid. Saved over £100 even after the AA offered me two reductions to stay with them.

Autonational:

£66 for Homestart and Recovery type cover, never seems to go up each year either. Used them a few times and never had to wait more than 30 minutes or so.

My RAC renewal came through this Morning, £251 for Roadside, Recovery and at Home and Mum is Additional member as well.

That just takes the Mick.

So I went on the AA website, £159 as a new member, RAC website, £165 for same cover.

Rang the RAC told them I'm leaving and they reduced it to £170. I'm happy with that as I've got Black Card cover so get discounts on other things but they just hope members will just not bother and keep paying £251.

Of course they do and by doing that they can get new customers (you!) on board by offering a discount that the existing customers pay for...

Co-Op Privilege Premier account. Can't remember how much extra it is over a normal acct each month but you get RAC membership, travel insurance, gadget insurance, better interest rates etc.

Worked out loads cheaper than staying with RAC as a standalone policy.

Did that a few days ago - the renewal cover quoted on renewal was £222, ended up halving it to £111 (for the same cover). Tbh that's still more than I wanted to pay but I'd left it until the last minute (phoned Sunday and the DD was already in the system to clear Monday) so I'll put up with it.

Check the cash back sites for good deals. I'm currently with QDOS and they were very good when I had to use them.

AutoAid +1, use the policy twice last year & didn't have any price hike on renewal, so signed up again.
