The M60 around the Manchester conurbation has had a 50mph limit enforcement in place for some time now.

When I join the speed limited section in the all singing all dancing car, I usually hit the cruise control, and watch as fuel economy displays around 70 to 80 mpg rather than 55 to 65 mpg at the tad just under 70 that I normally set the cruise at.

So my thoughts are, if I'm burning significantly less fuel, then so is every other vehicle.

I'm wondering if this has led to any measurable change in air quality in the region?

Data will all be there as it's monitored live around that area. Given the infrequency of the M60 running at 70mph I'm not sure what difference it will make overall. Weather patterns and wind speeds will also make a difference when cars are moving slowly if emissions are not dispersed quickly.
Answer - it's a bit more complex than that.

Aye, I didn't consider the snarl ups when you don't get out of second gear!

As someone that also has enjoyed the M62/60 roadworks for last couple of years, I equally enjoy the obscenely high MPG and serenity that pootling at 50mph brings.

Means I can completely toast it up the M61 without conscience too.

(I learned me a new word tonight...Conurbation)

"Serenely"
When it's flowing well, innit just? It's almost making driving a pleasurable experience again...

It's almost making driving a pleasurable experience again.

What on the Manchester Ring Road? Even late at night when empty it's just another version of hell. I left a significant amount of my lifespan on that thing and it's never been anywhere close to pleasurable.

I've just come back from a week driving around Serbia, Bosnia and Hungary. Now that IS serene, the beautiful EU-standard motorways are so empty that you can drive for several minutes without seeing another vehicle.
