Over the holidays I watched Two Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point and American Grafitti again. I also saw Le Mans, while not strictly a road movie I enjoyed the vibe.
Which other classic road trip films should I look out for. I'm not into recent remakes. I like the low budget originals.
The Wraith
easy rider?
The Straight Story.
Something wild (not sure if it's strictly a road movie)
One Week - a Canadian film - road trip on a Norton.
Do not look up the story too much to avoid spoilers.
Fandango. Still one of my favourite films ever.
Sideways
Wild at Heart
Nocturnal Animals (sort of)
Hell or High Water (again sort of)
True Romance
Duel
Easy Rider
Thunderbolt & Lightfoot
Little Fauss and Big Halsey
Badlands
Thanks guys, some great recommendations there
The Wraith
Yes! Had that on vhs as a kid it hasn't crossed my mind in decades.
OP mentioned my favourites. Try Drive. Not much actual driving but very stylish/atmospheric.
Dazed and Confused? A handful of amazing cars and trucks and a slow, day-in-the-life kind of plot with awesome music.
Thelma and Louise.
Surfing 50 states, low budget surf film with a before he was famous gotye soundtrack
Two Lane Blacktop
Edit- sorry just re-read your OP
How about
Repo Man would be a good bet as well.
Interstate 60: Episodes of the road.

Great, funny, surreal road movie.
A real hidden gem.
Oh, The Gauntlet if your a Clint Eastwood fan.
21 Days Under the Sky
Or, if you don’t mind your road trip not actually being in America, watch A Kurdish Movie

The Phantom Toolbooth
True Romance
Natural Born Killers
Grindhouse (although Planet Terror doesn't really count...)
Rubber

check out Dave Gorman , America Unchained.
Road trip across the US in an old station wagon using only Mom and Pop Shops.
It's years since I last watched them but good to see these 3 make the list.
Two Lane Blacktop
Thunderbolt & Lightfoot
Little Fauss & Big Halsey
Into The Wild - brilliant!
Kalifornia (1993)
As above, The Straight Story, Fandango and The Road. Sort of a road movie but classic Americana would be Bruce Brown's 'On any Sunday'.
Red Rock West - A rare decent Nic Cage film. He's driving in much of it anyway.
U Turn - an even rarer decent Jennifer Lopez film.
wrong thread!
This lot should keep me going longer than a road trip across the US
I visited the town of Independence in Oregon that Dave Gorman happened upon on his trip. A surprise of a main street with no chain stores. The guys I stayed with needed a part for a garage door, the ironmongers still stocked it thirty years after it was first fitted and it was sold by the same guy. That's the kind of town I'd like to live in
Little Miss Sunshine
EDIT: Actually the trailer doesn't make it look anywhere near as good as it actually is...
The Road.
Aragorn is brill in it.
Paris, Texas
Badlands
and, of course,
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 😀
Kailifornia.
Kalifornia
Planes Trains and Automobiles
The Road
Two Lane Blacktop
😆
Or, one that hasn't been suggested already - The Hitcher (Rutger Hauer version, NOT Sean Bean!!)
Oh come on, there can only be one. (Not very safe for work)
Crude American Pie style college comedy, but I laughed like a drain watching it.
Midnight Run with de Niro is a road movie. Not seen it since it came out, think it was pretty good.
Jack Lemmon "classic", The Out Of Towners - "Oh My Gawd George!"
Another vote for The Straight Story

I don't think I ever want to watch that film again. It tore me up the first time I watched it and now (as a father) I think I'd be an emotional wreck watching it.
Dunno.
Y tu mama tambien

The book is even worse, from this aspect. I don't think I've ever cried reading a book, until I read The Road.
I know what you mean: I love the book, and the film is pretty damn good, but I have no desire to read or watch them again.
For the record: I don't have children.
Yeah I've heard that you the book is much worse. Or better. More traumatic anyway.

Good shout and currently on Netflix.
Red Rock West, not seen that in ages, another good one.
Recently, Midnight Special was a great film. Bit of a blend of genre.
Trivia: True Romance almost has the same soundtrack as Badlands.
Not a road trip , but definitely a journey - The Warriors (1979).
Another vote for The Straight Story & Little Miss Sunshine too.
I read half of The Road but it shook me so much it's one of the few books I've started but never finished. I was actually dreading picking it up so there seemed no point putting myself through it. I have kids and that book still plays on my mind in darker moments.
Apart from that though, bloody brilliant, I'd recommend it to anyone!

No need to thank me.
APF
The Warriors is a great film, with a great soundtrack.
Smokey and the Bandit!
+1 Leningrad Cowboys Go America
I watched ‘It happened One Night’ again a couple of weeks ago, it remains as good as ever.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Herbie Goes Bananas
'ere paton - you've posted some extremely boring videos on completely the wrong thread mate. I say try reading the first post before linking to crap.
