I have just bought a car from a dealer. I am due to collect it this Friday.

Just sorted out the insurance, how does the road tax get set up/sorted out now?

Its just that I have had the same vehicle for 11 years.

It'll have no tax, it stopped carrying across between owners a while ago.

You'll need the v5c new keeper part which you'll get from the dealer, tax it online before you drive away, the dealer might offer to do this for you.

Don't worry - road tax was abolished in 1937 😉

Dealer offered to do this for me as part of their optional £150 admin package. 🙄

Sid that. Literally takes 2 minutes on the DVLA website.

"STW pedants assemble"
But it's not pedantry, is it? It's an important distinction to make, when so many car drivers complain about us "not paying road tax".

It’s pointless to say it though.
Whenever this discussion comes up at work, i will, at some point, say “so you’re telling me that all bikes should pay car tax when some cars don’t pay car tax?”
And the answer is ‘always’ yes.

It's not even VED now apparently, when did that change? 😕

The main change over recent years is VED is no longer transferable (but is refundable), so likely dealers are making more of a profit through admin fees or loading it on the price to tax it for you. Just do it yourself.

It's purely electronic now so tax online before picking up, all done.

When I bought my car last year the guy in the garage said 'here, use my PC to do your road tax', simple really.

Bought a car for my son last year and sorted car tax at side of road on phone.

I did it at the dealers online.

dealer sorted out tax. It was a huge £30. I was expecting to have to do it there and then.
insurance was an instant switch over as well. As soon as I parted with the old keys, got the new ones instant cover.
