On BBC2 now as I write, brilliant series, seems particularly prescient at the moment, “dictators who rule by fear, can’t trust even those closest to them” hope Vlad is feeling the need to looking over his shoulder!!

I started a thread when the first episode aired - that included some telling comments about leaders of governments taking no notice of experts which doesn’t just apply to dictators.

Nazis are members of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. This organization no longer exist. The term “Nazis” is now used as a slur to denigrate people we don’t like.

Er, yes. That's what the programmer's about. The clue is in the title.

But welcome to the forum.

Or where we see similar traits persisting...

I do like it when people completely new to the forum pile in with a possible defined agenda. I do wonder if we're attracting the attention of those who specialise in the dissemination of misinformation. Particularly when their English is somewhat suspect..

Been watching this series with my 11 year old, it's been really good. Quite worrying parallels with modern day though.

Indeed. Other ultranationalist bigots should be referred to as "sparkling fascists" rather than Nazis.

My thoughts exactly anagallis, I saw a meme recently; ‘those that don’t study history are forced to repeat it, whilst those who do study history are forced to stand and watch!’

I shall have to watch this - next in my book pile is 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' with 1,245 pages of almost blind-point text so a more accessible introduction to this complicated subject might be quite welcome 🙂

Who was that?

I mean, he does have a point about it being overused, plenty of other words that could be used to describe turds in a less than glowing manner.

Edit: I like that 'turds' gets through the filter. It's underused.

Wow, the bot farms must be pretty bored to join up here to defend Nazism.

Not like there's anything else going on at the moment for them to sink their teeth into.

In many ways I don't think Putin is a fascist (in the strict sense of the founding principles of fascism) It may very well be a fine debating point, but like Franco and Salazar, he is a autocratic dictator, but there's no single use of economy to produce a country that "just" prepares for war, there's no othering or racism that Putin uses to demonize a outside group, and there's no fetishisation of the future and technology, in fact there's a yearning for the order of the past.

I think it's probably just shorthand, I accept that, but it's a distinction I think that's important

Does time travel exist??

Hitler survived over 40 assasination attempts ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assassination_attempts_on_Adolf_Hitler ) which I find extraordinary. But, if time travel exists in the future, then maybe people travel back in time to try to assasinate Hitler, but because of the 'rules of time travel' (don't ask) they always fail - hence the large number of failed attempts.........

I think it was SD251. Sd.Kfz 251 was the iconic Nazi half track APC of WW2.

I had a colleague who tried that line once as if it was somehow a new piece of information. It may have been to him. When I asked him to explain why they, the Nazis, sided with Franco and Mussolini in the Spanish civil war rather than with the Russians who allied themselves with the socialists he was rather lost for words. He did at least admit that he didn't know anything about that.

Total right wing conspiracy nutjob. Very smart man but like many smart people didn't realise the extent of his own ignorance.

So you are saying that Putin's claim that Russia has invaded Ukraine to protect ethnic Russians from nazis is a lie?

Sorry my irony filter is probably turned off but are you sure about this?  He is demonising anyone who stands up to him as genocidal Nazis and his thing about hypersonic missiles & nuclear torpedos/mini submarines fits the bill on your criteria.

The fetishisation of the future and technology was really limited to a small bunch of Italian nutters who despite being pretty good with paintbrushes removed themselves from the gene pool by embracing the purifying benefits of war in WW1.  The genuine Nazis were more into the yearning for a fictional past order and purity, the miraculous technology only became a thing when things turned so far against them that they had to invent a source of hope for themselves.

Again, dancing on a pin head sort of stuff, for the sake of a discussion, but most of the research I've read, for me one of the defining characteristics of fascism is it's anti-Christianity (by which I mean it's social structures, not it's core beliefs), it's perhaps one of - if not the most radical movement that western Europe has seen by that measure, it's avowedly against conservatism, against the old established ways ands social leaders; and from that perspective while there are wrongs from that past that need to be corrected and past glories to be regained these can't be done by going back in time to the old ways or reliance on the old order  True fascists (like Hitler and Mussolini) sought change through technology and advancement  (in Germany see the Autobahn, the Radio, the VW, Lufthansa and so on)

Putin's acceptance of a social role for the orthodox church marks him (to my mind) as arch-conservative old school authoritarian in the mold of Franco.

Quite worrying parallels with modern day though.

This is the second series, focusing on WW2, the first series (3 years ago?) was the actual rise of the Nazis in the 1930s. That had some truly terrifying parallels to the last 10 years or so.

Possibly a thread at the time?

After the OPs heads up, I've just started watching it. I'm part way through the second episode. The first lines in the second episode could have been about Truwp and Boris.

Frightening stuff.

Think you’re right, that was a fair few years ago now. I remember googling the user name and found the half track and a Panasonic bread maker as options.

Really? I think you might have to have a word with yourself - or you vastly misunderstand what was going on in the mid '30s ...

TBH the series is nothing new - most of what is being communicated has been around for a very long time. Have there been any breakthrough findings?

The lines that I was referring to, and I paraphrase, that Hilter didn’t like to be involved in the hum-drum of daily governance and wasn’t interested in detail.

So I stand by my statement, it resonated with recent behaviours of the ex-President and the current Prime Minister.

And no, i don’t need to have a word with myself, I can see the difference between 1930s Germany under the Third Reich and the UK in 2022.

Putin’s comments about saving Ukrainian’s from Nazis is especially ironic considering that Russia has more than its own share of far-Right nationalist groups who align themselves with Nazism.

I like this poster from a pro-Ukrainian art resource;

Here’s another which I’d like to see come to pass…

The thing is 'nazi' has only ever been a slur. The National Socialist German Workers’ Party didnt coin the term Nazi for themselves - 'Nazi' is how other people , principally their opposition - referred to them -  a nickname derived from truncating  NA-tionalso-ZI-alistische - the word 'Nazi' predates the party as a derogatory term for a yokel or a peasant.

Its how germans in exile referred to the party but now how the party wanted to be referred to on home turf and it only found its way back into Germany once the war was over

for me one of the defining characteristics of fascism is it’s anti-Christianity (by which I mean it’s social structures, not it’s core beliefs)

There was a very definite Christian element in the German National Socialist movement, their flag was a black cross on a red background with a circle in the centre bearing a swastika.
Certainly in many countries moving towards extremely autocratic nationalist governments, religion has a major part in it, mostly evangelical Christian, but also Hindu, with Modi’s government in India.

there’s no othering or racism that Putin uses to demonize a outside group, and there’s no fetishisation of the future and technology, in fact there’s a yearning for the order of the past.

Sorry my irony filter is probably turned off but are you sure about this?  He is demonising anyone who stands up to him as genocidal Nazis and his thing about hypersonic missiles & nuclear torpedos/mini submarines fits the bill on your criteria.

Oh, Putin is very definitely using the past for his actions, using the lie that Ukraine is just a former part of Greater Russia, and not an independent country with a history that actually predates Russia, the Kievan Rus.

The whole Nazi slur being used against Ukraine is just a ruse to play on memories of the Nazis in Russia during WW2, particularly Stalingrad.

Here is some background.
