Not sure how big he was over here, either solo or with the Heartbreakers, but to my mind left a pretty big legacy of his own work, as well as being part of the Travelling Wilbury's.

Another one of music's greats gone.

Bloody hell, seriously ?

What a God Damn shame, he was part of my growing up.. loved his laid back nature and songwriting.

Rest well... Tom.

The sunlight on the garden
Hardens and grows cold,
We cannot cage the minute
Within its nets of gold,
When all is told
We cannot beg for pardon.

Our freedom as free lances
Advances towards its end;
The earth compels, upon it
Sonnets and birds descend;
And soon, my friend,
We shall have no time for dances.

The sky was good for flying
Defying the church bells
And every evil iron
Siren and what it tells:
The earth compels,
We are dying, Egypt, dying

And not expecting pardon,
Hardened in heart anew,
But glad to have sat under
Thunder and rain with you,
And grateful too
For sunlight on the garden.

He never made it big over here, but do recall Learning To Fly being played a lot of MTV around 1990. He apparently did a few tunes with Stevie Nicks in the early 1980s.

RIP.

Saw him at IoW festival in 2012.

Wasn't much of a fan before that, but became one after seeing him live. Great performer.

My first 2 music memories,

Listening to help! L.p. on my dad's lap.

Looking for TP and the heartbreakers on the chart show every Sat because I could shout on my dad that his fave musician was on tv.

I've since inherited all my dad's LP back catalogue, including all TP.

I'll have to wait to spin them until tomorrow as the little ones in bed.

Sad news.

Bad times. Kinda lost track of where he was at after Southern Accents, but American Girl intro still raises hairs on the back of my neck 40 years on. 😥

I'm actually devastated. He was one of my favourites, and has been for 30+ years.

May his memory be eternal.

Full Moon Fever was the soundtrack to one of the greatest summers, I ever had. Never really listened to his other stuff, but that one album has a special place in my mind.

So much so, that i have never felt the need to comment on a RIP thread before tonight.

Cheers Mr Petty, RIP.

Odd that the BBC are only reporting critically ill right now. Either way it's a real shame, I loved Full Moon Fever, one of the first albums I bought.

RIP Tom

The End of the line. Brilliant song by the wilburys, and a nostalgic video with Mr Orbison's guitar rocking on the chair...

Tom Petty is one of those that really made my taste in music. The jangly 12 string, Rickenbackery sound and a sense of melody that was undeniable. I discovered he really existed with the Wilburys, and he's just always been around since. Thanks Tom.

The only website that has confirmed his death is rolling stone magazine no media outlets have reported him as being dead. Hold your horses.

Sad that someone should get reported dead, when they're not. Media frenzy to be 'first' spills over onto STW. 🙁

Freefalling - one of my fave songs - reminds me of driving around West Cumbria in a funky red cortina, on the few sunny days of my youth.

Hell of a dude. Just heard Whisperinf Bob talking about him on he radio. If you make it onto his “one of my favourite bands” list, you’ve done alright. I liked the story about him telling the record company that they couldn’t stick an extra $ onto the price of his LP when he was at the height of his and The Heartbreakers’ popularity. He was standing up to record companies pretty early on.

BBC4 had an excellent doc on him a while back - which I imagine will be played again soon. Worth a watch if you get the chance.

Oh and “Running Down A Dream” is a good running song in the 170+ cadence range. 🙂

Did it ever occur that he was dead as reported ..and the other media outlets were just slow to catch up..?

The agency that first reported it changed their mind. He’d been taken off life support, apparently, but then evidently didn’t die for a few hours.

Edit - that’s what appeared to happen last night, anyway. BBC this morning said he ‘couldn’t be revived’ after they found him in cardiac arrest. 😥

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at Knebworth in 1978 supporting Genesis. I think the only album I have of his is "Full Moon Fever", I think "Running down a dream" is my favourite track from that.

They played Learning to fly when on Radio X this morning, cranked the stereo and sang along.

Introduced to Tom Petty via a BMX vid called Road Fools 4, great song and good video.

Sad that someone should get reported dead, when they're not. Media frenzy to be 'first' spills over onto STW.

The LAPD have apologised for prematurely releasing to news media the news that he was dead (which he wasn't, but now is).

I don't think it's massively unreasonable for news outlets (and STW members) to report news that has come straight from the relevant police department.

And to be fair, found unresponsive following cardiac arrest and on life support with no brain activity is tantamount to dead in any case.

I thought his own material was pretty good but weirdly his best stuff seemed to be on his many collaborations.
Hugely influential to many artists, just listen to the last 2 War on Drugs CDs for example.

Very sad to hear this. I saw him at the Rainbow on his first tour over here. I was helping a mate who ran a t-shirts and jewellery concessions stand in the foyer, we never saw support acts but always packed up in a hurry to see the headliners.
I'd vaguely heard of him but wasn't too certain about his music but he was excellent and I've followed his career with a lot of pleasure over the years.

But as the person who should know, I assure you I didn't post in a frenzy to be first. 😉

I was however a bit curious whether he was well known over here, seems more so than I expected.

Saw him at Hyde Park this summer. Totally rocked it. Such a cool dude. No need for fancy stage shows and lights, mostly just him and the band playing fantastic music, with Stevie Nicks popping up. So incredibly sad to hear this news.

Sad loss, Full Moon Fever was the soundtrack to a holiday in Boston, heard Free Falling in a car driving from the airport, bought the tape and listened to it the whole holiday.

Just wanted to add this track from the album " You're Gonna Get It "
One of the first albums I was sent as a " sample " from A&M records ( vinyl) as a young 18 year old record company rep.
( I worked for Bi-label who in turn worked on behalf of all the majors) ..still one of my favourite albums ..
The title of the track is pretty apt too.." When The Time Comes "

He had many a great song, but this one stuck with me, he could just convey the emotion required so effortlessly (see also "I Won't Back Down"
